Ron was the smoothest but a waste of raw talent. I used to idolize Ron and try to ride like him..JT gear and all! In 86, at Millville MX, two days before the race, I asked Ron's mechanic where Ron was so that I could get his autograph. Ron was on the freaking golf course playing golf!! I got Ricky Johnson's though. I also got Jeff Ward's used front fender for my KX 125 (RIP).
The Greatest Of All-Time To Have Never Known The Value & Benefits Of Training. Imagine how great you would've been Ronnie??? You could've been 500 World Champ for 10 years in a row!!!!
I raced him in Minnesota at the Aug 1986 Millville (spring creek motocross track) and got my ass handed to me! hahaha. what a fun time, it was the "best seat in the house" ! It was not really a race for him, maybe just his practice, but I was "Racing" !
great footage.. music..ok.. would have preferred the sound of the bikes. Comparing apples with pears if we compare the talents and great riders of then to today's supercross generation.. At the end of the day.. One can argue on statistics.. Or one can argue on machinery.. Track lay out.. etc... So every rider will be considered good or great corresponding to the time he was active.. No use in comparing them with today's riders. As for Ron.. He is a eternal would have been..
I saw him race in the old stadium in Tampa Fl. I have owned a stock 94' KX500 and will probably buy a basket case next weekend, My point is present day Supercross is weak. These guys are even more impressive now and the talent and bravery really show. A modern bike makes it easy now. Fuel mapping and ignition timing.. Big deal. Let's see how many times Bubba can crash on a YZ490 with overheating suspension!!
Une des plus belles courses que j'ai pu voir de mes yeux, la France (JMB, Yannig Kervela, J. Vimond) commençait à chatouiller l'Amérique (Ricky Jonhson, Jeff Ward et Ron Lechien).
Lechien, quiet possibly the sports greatest "could have been of all time". Where was his head during the late 80s? I think we know, but Im not saying here. He should have won at least one of the `87 or `88 500 titles, but we know why he didnt. I loved watching him ride when he was winning on pure talent and adrenaline and nothing else, because thats all he brought to the table after the mid 80s. What a waste of his and Kawasaki's time...
Pure aggression! Lechien was a throwback to the days of "tough guys" (I mean you pretty much have to be a bad ass to "rock" the endangered "squirrel tail mullet") that you were scared to pass or even to make eye contact with, guys like the Flyin' Hawaiian John Desoto, Rocket Rex Staten and of course all the big and smelly Europeans who could kick your ass without even spilling their beer! Wow is that Wardy #3 getting checked out on? Another great post Cigano68, you're a true fan...THANK YOU!
I hope the reason for putting music to this is because the original footage had no sound.
Sorry to say, but the overwhelming majority of moto fans on YouTube are sick of having to listen to this kinda crap instead of the sound of the bikes. Especially with classic "glory years" footage like this.
yes the heavy metal music made it so much more enjoyable. Maybe Lechein didnt train because if he did AND failed he'd have no excuses? what better excuse than "oh I dont train..."
Yes, Liesk for Australia(on Thorpes works bike) holeshot the first moto but Lechien wore him down.Bayle passed everyone on his 125 including Leisk on the last lap to finish second behind Lechien. That was a great track and a great race.
Year, I remember Liesk, which formidable pilot. There was also Georges Jobe for Belgium. It was the end of my period championat ufolep motocross 250 there... That of memories, special thanks for this movie.
It was the only one to take exterieurs profoundly, to break even barriers.
I remember this race, and Ron is the only rider i can see with his girl who's seet on his thigh, with a beer on a hand. Then all rider working. lol. This man is so talented.
It is in the gp of Japan that he was put outside for ownership of maryjuana.
I saw Ron race at Troy, OH 1988 MX 500Nationals. He was one the factory KX 500 and just put such a beat down on the other guys that day. Killed them like RC or James Stewart do today. He was amazing when he was on it.
I saw him race a month before this MXDN in Millville at the 500 national. He showed up in a limo. Johnson beat him, but man he was great to watch on that 500. We thought he was so cool with his mullet hangout the back of his helmet!
Jermery mcgrath said that Ron is the most talanted rider he knows. He hadent raced in 5 yrs and turned up at a ama supercross and made it into the main event...your a legend dude!!!
Yeah Kiwimxer52, but that must not considering such as Ricky Johnson or Jean-Michel Bayle who (Both of them) won both the 500cc Championship AND the 250cc Championship in the Same Season...That's Something That Not even Bob Hannah (My Opinion, Bob Hannah is the ORIGINAL "Greatest (Rider) of All Time"....
The Dogger was the so smooth and had such a flow on the bike, Bayle is the only other rider i have seen who could go so fast and look like he is just cruising.
If Ronnie had his head more into racing he would of racked up the championships.
@UtopiaBrands I can imagine: what such a talent it couldn't be different.
I saw them ride (Micky twice in Italy) Ron in France and they were so smooth on the bike. Micky rode in Italy and the world championship, but wasn't lucky.
Ron Lechien was one of the best. He will go down in history with Joel Robert, Marty Tripes and Jean-Michele Bayle as one of the most naturally gifted and effortless riders in the history of the sport. Watch how smooth he rides. He spanked both moto's, completely killed the competition.
shit...i remember one year down here in san diego ron went to kerney mesa yamaha the night of the supercross, and since he didnt have a factory ride, he rode a box stock yz250 and won the supercross. i rode with ron and Rj and all thsoe guys back then, at carlsbad and other places around town, martysmiths track. etc. lechien was cool. now hes real fat i hear
Oh, you rode with all "thsoe" guys? And it's "he's" like he is and is "martysmiths" one word? You're to fucking dumb to even know when to capitalize, or maybe you don't know how to type at all. California homo fag.
it would be " TOO dumb" not "to dumb" you stupid twit....i bet you were born from a petree dish that used the blood from your moms bleeding vaginal herpes sores and the cum from a rare chimpanzee...cuz youre dumber than a monkey and bigger biatch than a bleeding vagina....need i say youve been FUCKING PWNED yet again, go back to cartoons, your diminished capacity and poor excuse for a brain is getting used as toilet paper from me when i wipe my shaved asshole with it, biatch

I always liked Lechien, and hated what happened to him, he could flat ride.
Howeven I remember his nick name being (The Machine) I seen him pull
a 1 min lead in a big outdoor, go down hard in the hard pack, looked like
he went down on asphalt at 100 mph.....it was ugly.
