yeah and generally the higher your social class the lower your awareness. greed wins over rationality every time, anyone who's making good money is treading thin ice. it distracts you from things unrelated to money; the things that fucking matter
@Ratm78213 yes but he is saying white collar criminals in relation to politicians 'politicans got lipstick on the collar' Condemming issues that don't matter to pay for their 'caribbean weekend'. 'mandatory minimum sentencing cause he got caught with a pocket full of medicine-another ten' (medical marijuana). But yes in general a white collar is just one who works 9-5 in a business situation, knowledge of issues is irrelevant.
@jsr9422 "white collar" essentially refers to professionals. It's a coined term to describe a suit. and it doesn't make them "unaware" as you say, it just means they're smart enough to have a real job.
"white collar" people run the world. smoking pot and complaining will never achieve change.
@jsr9422 "White collar criminals" refers to people in professional positions of responsibility who commit crimes as oppose to the bank robber or street mugger. White collar criminals do their dirty work through activities such as defrauding investors, embezzlement and so forth.
@jsr9422 actually, in general, I think "white colar" is in regard to "white colar crime." Corporate crime, meaning mandatory minimums are nothing in comparison to what corporations get away with on a daily basis thru loopholes. imho anyway.
@jsr9422 White Collar are professional workers, that can include politicians, but also business executives. White collar crime is using ones knowledge of the law, econmics and politics to make oneself reach. blue collar workers are industrial workers, the working class.
Also,he mentions stuff about weed, like how they steal stem cells from the unborn, and thats all legal yet the bongs illegal to have on you.Marijuana is a peacful, god made drug that does nothing but make you happy and peacful,it cant kill you unless you retarted enough to smoke a pound in like an hour which ANYTHING will do that to you buddy.Yet man-made drugs are legal for people to abuse and over-dose on everyday but hey,the governments making money off of it so its all good, you know.Fuck that.
Okay guys, this is what the songs all about, its about how the Government are Hypocrite Bullshitters. He shows examples of that through the whole song.Like where he talks about the government trying to make the world,or the United States at least less violent, yet they go off and nuke/bomb countrys and kill innocent kids and families, but hey, there the government,so they can do that without anybody taking action or else youll have some disciplinary act put upon you.Wake Up World.
Okay guys, this whole song is about how the Government are hypocrites and bullshitters.Example.The part where he says they "tell us to be less violent yet they bomb countrys like its nothing" or something like that, and people say well they do that to kill off the taliban or whoever were fighting at the time,no,they kill inoccent kids and families. The Government IS bullshit hypocrites. They were, are, and will always be that way.

I saw Michael Franti and Spearhead at Earth Dance, it was the best, most "high power" show I've ever seen. And I have have seen them all since The Beatles & Stones. This was much higher. He brought me out of my wheelchair to dance and sing with Him "on stage". The guy is a "for real" kind of person. Thank you ....and all blessings, Visnave Swami Maharaja
This is my favorite Franti and Spearhead song...but screw that "I get so mad I want a peaceful revolution" shit! Fuck that! Our Government and military does not hear us when we are peaceful. I get so mad I want to bomb an institution...I can relate to that.
One of the best things about Franti is that everybody can enjoy his music. At his concert there were kids around 10 years old all the way up to little old ladies.

He is trying to say that it doesn't matter who these people are, that people should just move on from the past. And by telling people it was him they can stop obsessing over the past.
@jsr9422 He is saying, it doesnt matter who it was, it's in the past, and if need be he will claim it was him so everyone stops worrying who or what and get on with their lives
Poetry, politics, music -- together again in the 21st century. Takes me back to Marvin Gaye singing What's Going On. Thanks, Franti, for speaking truth to power so beautifully.
Just caught his show at a Oysterfest in San Fran, very good very talented, not everyones gonna agree with his lyric's.... at least he is putting forth the effort. me personally I was having too much fun to judge his msg. all I know is his groove made me move and about 15k others where bouncing to his music
If you were paying attention to this thread, you would see that I was responding to NathanPathan who didn't understand what he was hearing. I don't give a crap about white collar crime (except that Bernie Madoff''s Ponzi scheme falls in this category, and that's a rather big deal). Franti's great song is about a lot more than white collar crime, although he does mention it. Take your hostility somewhere else, it's boring.
@NathanPathan White collar originated because they realised menial workers could get away with having a dirty neck for two days so they wore blue collars. White collar was to make sure you had a wash before work.
That's true serendipity, muarefl! I love that story.... I had a similar thing happen to me with an Eva Cassidy CD...fell into my life, and profoundly changed me...
he is actually really good friends with this yoga teacher here in cleveland for 20 years or so... who is really good friends with my girlfriend... so when he came in town for a concert he went to yoga and the grocery store before the show... then had an awesome show!! like i said though he is a very cool dude!!
That is beyond cool. We need more people like Michael Franti in the world. He is one cool dude. He's coming to Bumbershoot 2009.. Seattle music festival, it will be the first time i will see him live. Verry excited
great song and lyrics although i think he should have kept the 'fuck's in. it seems like it was written as an angry song, and would be more appropriate keeping the strong words. seems kinda diluted now compared with the original, still a great tune though.
in time, hip hoppers will dissolve the negative potency of english curse words... need i say we view the language as imposed, and our mastery of it will invalidate pompery?
who said swear words were necessarily negative? '"to swear - to make a solemn declaration, to use profane oaths"' ever hear of the phrase - fuck yeah ! or while making love - oh fuck yes !!!!! anger isn't necessarily a bad thing if its directed in the right place. was the bush shoe throwing a negative incident?
Swear words are inappropriate when used solely because the person using them doesn't have the vocab to express themselves without them, but they can have their place - sure.
AMEN. If someone wants to steal, they can steal an Eminem cd, and use it to prop up a table leg or something. Someone needs to put billions behind a music channel that plays only aware and evolved artists like Franti, Ozomatli, etc.

I can't explain why he's not more well known. I did hear a song in a Starbucks not too long ago. Maybe there's hope...
There's a few changes in this version in the lyrics, when he says "I'm so mad I want a piece of a revolution" it was originally "I'm so mad I want to bomb an institution". Maybe he had to change it because he was afraid of being arrested under the patriot act, I know that sounds ridiculous but they've arrested people for saying things far less threatening. Amazing song by the way.

I totally agree! I've been following him since Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy. I finally saw him last year at the Nokia Theater in NYC. He exceeded my unbelievably high expectations!
