  • Hi Laura, your videos are informative and fun to watch. Can you please post the recipe for the cakes that you used? Thank you and keep up the good work.

  • Thank you so much! Oh gosh, I don't even remember what cake recipes I used to use back then! LOL! I'm glad you think my videos are fun! Thank you! :)

  • Great video...thanks for sharing. I liked the music also!

  • Thank you so much! You're very kind! :0)

  • oh thats ok....so are you using ready made fondant?or are you still making but not the mmf thing?

  • Thanks! I usually buy Satin Ice fondant. It's the best tasting one I've tried thus far. :0)

  • hi there again just want to ask how long will be an MMF be usufull if i will stock a bunch of MMF?....and do you know how to make a gel icing for piping?thanx...

  • To be honest with you, I'm not sure as I've only made homemade MMF once and I didn't store it. I used it immediately. I don't knowhow to make gel icing for piping. LOL! Sorry I couldn't be of any help. :)

  • oh thanx for that more questions to come....thanx

  • hi I jaust want to ask if there is a specific type of compressor to use?cause when i went to the market i saw different types of compressors or should i say features like PSI i don't know if there is a recomended PSI requirement to use for airbrushing cakes...(what is MMF?)thanx...

  • HI James, There are MANY brands of compressors. You don't need a large one. As long as it has AT LEAST 30 psi you should be ok. They all do the same job so don't buy the hype that some are really better than others. You can purchase a small table mount one (like airmaster or kopykake) or a larger one that has wheels & stands on the ground. I've always used large ones but only cuz they've been hand me downs from my Dad. MMF=marshmallow fondant. :)

  • Hi, I airbrushed a fondant cake for the first time using red americolor. It looked fine but I could def taste the dye and it wasnt very good. I make my fondant. MMF and I love the taste but decided to airbrush since colors like red, black etc are hard to get trying to incorporate the dye into the MMF. what am I doing wrong. I only did 2 coats of the airbrush color. I have 2 cakes this week that Im supposed to airbrush now Im panicking because the taste was horrible. please help. Thanks.

  • Sorry to hear about that... Wow... I really am not sure what could've been the reason. My cakes never taste bad when I airbrush them. At least I haven't gotten any complaints... Are you certain you used "airbrush color"? I'm confident your homemade fondant tastes good but I really wouldn't know how to help you since I don't make homemade MMF. I buy Satin Ice and have never had the combo of the Satin Ice and airbrush color taste bad...? Sorry I can't help. :(

  • @laurapoopie Im positive it was airbrush color. I ordered a cake airbrushing machine and it came with four americolor airbrush colors. Im going to try another practive cake tomorrow with a different color to see if I get the same outcome. thanks.

  • @tess5162 Red actually does have a funny taste. Ive used it in a bakery for years and get the occasional complaint when too much color is incorporated. Not sure if you can do anything about it.

  • @waterhouseification is it just red that has this weird bitter taste or have you experienced it with any other colors? Im supposed to airbrush a cake this week that is blue and gold and I hope to God it doesnt taste like that. Im going to airbrush a practice cake tomorrow with different colors to see how those taste. thanks.

  • You mentioned Americolors in your video , do you mix anything with the color while airbrushing , or just the raw colors.. thank you :)

  • No need to mix anything into the color unless you want to change the shade. You can airbrush the exact color in the bottle. :0) You're welcome! :0)

  • Hi Laura !!!

What shall I say .. I am running out of words for you.. You are the best !!! After your reply on airbrush I searched a lot , found many , but all were out of my budget.as right now I cannot spend so much.. . just when i was about to loose hope of trying out airbursh , i found this video of yours..,

Gal you are the best .. your video is just so good , for a beginner like me , it gives the courage and hope to try and not to give up.. you rock.. XOXO!!.I am going to get one today.:)

  • That is so wonderful! I'm so glad you stumbled accross this video of mine! So happy I could help you in some way! YES! YOU CAN DO IT! :0)

  • the flowers were real, did u put anything on them to stick them in the cake

  • Yes they were real. The flowers are inserted in little plastic hollowed out spikes so that the stem and sap does not touch or leak into the cake. You can buy these at any floral supply store. :0)

  • Do you bake from scratch or box mix ?

  • Scratch

  • @laurapoopie ur work is so beautiful !!!

  • Thank you so much! That is so sweet! :0)

  • Hello I have a question how did you make it look so good.It looks like laminated

  • Hi! By airbrushing an airbrush color on it called pearl sheen. It gives every color a beautiful finish. ;)

  • Hello, how are you..I love your cakes..My question is what do use to cover the cakeboard to keep the paint from getting on the already prepared board? Or could i put the cake together after i allow the paint to dry? What is you suggestion? Thanks for the info!

  • Hi there! I'm doing great! I rarely airbrush cakes already on the cakeboard like I did this cake. Most of the time I airbrush the tiers separately and then stack the cake when it's totally done. The only reason I airbrushed it on the board for this video was because the entire cake was one color and it was easier at the time. Hope this helps! :0)

  • Thank you , I have my daugther B-day comming up and am thinking of buying a ready made cake and decorating it with fondant . I love making things but making cakes from scrach isnt my thing . the cake comes out so hard :( I dont know if I am doing something wrong or if it needs more baking powder . I am going to buy my self a sprayer it doent look at hard as I thought . painting fondant is so hard and take too much time and paint . thank you :)

  • You're welcome! You're right! Coloring fondant by hand is a pain! :)

  • Hi can you use this for fondant aswell thank you

  • Hi! Yes, you definitely can. Actually, I RARELY airbrush buttecream cakes. It's usually fondant covered cakes. :)

  • KIERO HORDENAR EL CAKE DE NUESTRA BODA... TU Y YO.. !!!

  • Buena honda!

  • Hey Laura...I know you posted this video a while ago but I just have a couple of questions. I know someone asked earlier about the fact that you covered the cake base with plastic before airbrushing and you confirmed that you did. My question is, how did you get it off (like out from under the cake)? Also, your borders looked like they were already pearescent before the airbrush...is that the case? If so, how did you do it?

  • Hi. Actually, this is the only cake I've ever wrapped the baseboard with plastic wrap. I did this since the whole cake was gonna be sprayed with pearl shimmer. The plastic was not under the cake, just around it. When I started videotaping I had already given the cake a few sprays which is why the pearl borders probably already looked shimmery. :0)

Se llama el video "How To Stack A Cake My Way". La encontraras en mi lista de "friends" en mi pagina. Te prometo que te va ayudar! :0)

  • hi laura! Why do you put your cakes on cardboard while icing them? :)

  • Hi! I put each tier on top of cardboard (besides the cakeboard they're already on) so that I can lift each tier easily in an out of the fridge without any risk of damaging them. I've accidentally stuck my finger in one too many iced cakes when lifting. LOL! Also so I can easily carry them when airbrusing. :0) Hope this helps!

  • how do you airbrush cakes a certain color without turning people's mouths that color? I tried airbrushing a cake and it turned everyone's mouth and teeth blue. =(

  • Haha! Unfortunately, there's no way around that. Red, blue, and black are the worst! LOL! :0)

  • I have a question, how did you stack your cakes? what support system did you use to keep the top tiers from crushing the bottom one? :] Thanks very much

  • Hi! I learned how to stack my cakes from Edna (Tonedan1) here on youtube. I highly recommend you check out her tutorial because it's awesome! ;0)

  • @laurapoopie I watched it and it was pretty good :D Thanks so much!

  • Awesome! Glad it was useful! ;0)

  • where do you get your ak recipes from

  • Scratch recipe books. :0)

  • How would you transport this cake, without breaking or falling apart???

  • It was really not that tough. :) Especially with square tiers and of course dowels through the center, it gives the cake a good amount of stability. It was heavy! LOL! :)

  • oh thanks!!

  • sorry if i sound very dumb right now which i will but if the airbrush paint goes on the cake dont you taste it?

  • That's not a dumb question. :) The airbrush color has no flavor so all you taste is the icing underneath. :)

  • Hey i love your videos, I was wondering if you can use any type of airbrush to work on cakes just as long as the airbrush is clean?

  • Thank you! :) Yes, you can pretty much use ANY airbrush. As long as it gets the job done. ;)

  • Hi laura I m going to look into getting me an airbrush, btw how much do you usually charge for a cake this size? I have some one asking me to make some thing like this.

  • Hi Cherise, You'll enjoy the airbrush as much as I have for sure. This cake was REALLY big! Usually for something like this I would charge about $500. BUT, it was for a very close friend of mine so I gave her the "friend" price. :)

  • That's nice. Btw what brand is your airbrush? Do you know if any on eBay is good?

    :-)

  • To be honest, i don't even know the brand I use... LOL! :) You might wanna search ebay for a used KopyKake! :)

  • Okay I will price around and check Michaels when I go to the mainland.

    Thanks

  • You're welcome! :)

  • Nice :D Good luck with the Airbrushing

  • Why don't you just do it outside, make a little space where you can work( of course without getting wet if it's raining)

  • Actually, my awesome Dad is building me a spray booth as we speak! :) Gonna spray in the garage from now on in a clean safe booth! :)

  • Thanks Laurie, excellent tutorial, just ordered my airbrush

  • Thank you! I'm so happy for you that you're airbrush is on its way! Let me know how you like it! :)

  • is it really paint?

  • Yes it is! It's paint you can eat! LOL! They are airbrush colors and you can buy them online or at your local cake supply if they carry them. :) Edible paint! :)

  • Can I dilute the Wilton color and use it in my airbrush?

  • Yes you can. Dilute with a high alcohol content like vodka or vanilla extract.

  • hi laura about the air compressor again, did you have to buy a smaller hose or any attachments or any thing smaller because the gallon size is so big? does it adjust to the amount or pressure you choose to come out?

  • I never had to buy any hoses because the one my Dad gave me came with the hose. You adjust how much air you want to come out at the mouth of the airbrush.

  • hi laura just wondering what size gallon air compressor you are using for your airbrush gun? also how much did it cost?

  • Hi Abby, My compressor is pretty huge. It's a 10 gallon compressor my Dad gave me because he wasn't using it anymore at his shop. He used to use if to refinish furniture. I have no idea how much it cost. You can get a cheap used one (an Airmaster, much smaller) on ebay. :)

  • great job like always i want to know ik you made the cakes from scrach or from a cake mix box

  • Thanks so much! :) 95% of the time they're from scratch UNLESS it's some weird flavor I've never made before... LOL! :)

  • Have never thought to dry it with the air....genius!

  • Haha! Thank you! :) It works awesome! :)

  • Great!!!!! can you tell me in what Michaels store you found it????

  • Hi! Yes! I found it at the Michaels on George Dieter right next to Tinseltown! :)

  • Very impressive! I can never get the corners sharpe on square cakes very well. Any advice?? You're very talented. Keep on posting.

  • Thank you so much! :) When I'm doing the corners, I push the icing on BOTH sides towards THAT corner? Know what I mean? Instead of going from one side, over the corner, and to the other side. That always seems to help me achieve a somewhat sharp corner. :) Hope that helps! :)

  • Can we use the $15 air compressor from airmaster.

  • To be honest with you, I have no idea. I didn't even know they made one so cheap. :)

  • oh, ok. well keep making awesome cakes

  • Thank you sweetie! :)

  • Hey Laura, lovely cake. Congrats on your new venture towards wedding cakes. Another tiny step toward your dream I guess.

  • is torting wgen u level the cake?

  • You got it! :)

  • Gracias! Que bueno que te gusto el video. Realmente te puedes conseguir uno super barato. :)

  • Hi Laura, thank you for posting this tutorial on how to airbrush the whole cake! You made it looks so much easier than I thought it would be!! I thought it'd be a nightmare to airbrush the whole cake :P Now I think I won't be afraid to airbrush my cake. Thank you so much!!! By the way this cake looks great :) Oh ya, did you have to cover the cake board before airbrushing the cake?

  • Hi! Thank you! I'm glad it was useful for you! :) I forgot to mention in the video, but the board was completely wrapped with saran wrap so that I wouldn't color the board by accident. This is the 1st time I ever airbrushed a cake with it ALREADY on the board. The reason I did this was because since it was all gonna be the same color, I just went ahead and stacked it on the board. If doing different colors, it's a good idea to airbrush them separately and on a board that CAN get dirty. :)

  • Thanks so much for your help! I'm really glad I found you here :D

  • so is that whT TEchers do with leftover projects :) j/j nice cake laura

  • Haha! That's HILARiOUS! Yes, that's what we do with them! :) You should see what I do with papers I don't feel like grading! LOL! Just kidding! :)

  • Laura this is lovely. How big is each tier may I ask?

Gosh that red velvet cake looks amazing.. I've never tried it. Never eaten it! It's not a very popular or common flavour down here. I plan to change that cos it LOOKS amazing. it's chocolate flavoured right?

I envy you being brave enough to do a buttercream cake!

    Awesome job honey.

    Danielle x

  • Hi Danielle! Thank you! The tier sizes were 12", 10", and 8" squares. Each tier was about 7-8 inches tall. Yes, it's basically chocolate flavored with red food coloring and a touch of vinegar. Go figure, but something about the vinegar gives it a different taste than a chocolate cake. I tried desperately to make the case for fondant but the client INSISTED on buttercream. Oh well, se la vie! Thanks sweetie! :)

  • Very nice cake! Do you find that buttercream is more difficult to work with than fondant?

  • Hi Amber, YES buttercream is difficult for ME. Some decorators find it easier to work with than fondant. But I always get very frustrated because like I said, for me, it's almost impossible to get it PERFECTLY smooth. And that bugs me because I try so hard to get things right. I'm sure you understand? :) Thanks for the compliment! :)

  • I have a question about the airbrush color. Do you put the color in straight or do you dilute it with something?

  • I put the color in STRAIGHT, UNLESS I want a lighter shade, I mix in a little bit of airbrush white. ;)

  • Thank you for taking the time to show how to do this! I am going to go to micheals and buy a cheap airbrush to try this out.

  • Awesome! You're welcome! :)

  • ok never mind with my ealier question i commented that right before i heard you say michaels....i love the cake....i have one question how do you get your cakes so level...i struggle with this so much

  • HI! LOL! That's okay! :) I use a torting knife. It's basically a big handle with a blade and it lets you set the measurement on both sides so when you slice the cake it's the exact same height all around. You can buy one at your local cake supply place, Michael's or even Hobby Lobby. I got mine (the Wilton brand) at Michael's for like $19. So glad you liked the cake! :)

  • can you get this at ac moore or michael's

  • another beautiful cake!!!! are the flowers real? cake looks wonderful and it looks delicious as well :)

  • Thank you! Yes, the flowers were real! :) They were pink roses. The florist was supposed to put them on the cake but I got stuck with the job at the last minute. :)

  • WHO!!!!!! laura you did an aswome job

  • Haha! THANK YOU!!!! :)

  • Fantastic!!

  • Thank you! :)

  • I think you did a great job for a cake that is that big! Good luck & keep it up..

  • Thank you! :)

  • Whoa that is a huge cake Laura! It was also brave of you to even attemp at square cake--that I cannot do.

Like Nivia said, it is delicate, elegant and beautiful. I'll call this simple but truly elegant. It may be simple but that is just the perfect base for the flowers to go on top. Your edges are really sharp, the flow of the flowers is nicely arranged and the overall look is definitely satisfying.

I hope you get more wedding cakes! I'd love to see more.

    Thanks for the airbrushing

  • tutorial. That has got to be in my Christmas list.

  • Thank you Rylan! I hope I get more wedding cakes too! The florist at the last second said she wouldn't be able to be there to arrange the flowers so she just left them there for me and left a picture of "what" it was supposed to look like... I tried my best! :)

  • Delicate, simple, elegant and beautiful, just like a woman, hahahahahha! Great job gal, you rock! Laura do you know sugared productions? Zambito is a great cake decorator and she has got a few videos on how to get the buttercream right, fondant... She is very good, I would absolutely recommend her videos.

Take care sweetie! Ay Alejandro Sanz, era mi favorito cuando yo era solo una nina hahahhaha, cuantos recuerdos.

  • Hola Nivia, Thank you! Glad you liked it! :) Yes, I know Sugar Ed. Prod. I actually have one of her DVD's that my friend Mayen gave me and it helped A LOT! :) Hay, todavia me fascina Alejandro Sanz! Se me hace tan chulo! :)

  • oooh ALejandro Sanz!! Bien chulo! I love his lips and his eyes lol

  • wow very smooth simple and elegant

  • Gracias Mari! :)

  • I never thought of using that for cake airbrushing, have to give it a try. Your cakes are so nice, you must not EVER sleep! LOL!! Your buttercream smoothing is WAY, WAY better than I will ever get mine!

  • Thank you! It feels like I never sleep! LOL! Tomorrow will be the first day I get to sleep in in a very long time! :) Thanks for the compliment! :)

  • for it being your first just buttecream weadding cake i think you did great!!! i loved it simple but beautifull..... you are really making me think about getting one of those air brush compressor.. great job laura!! :) btw i love alejandro saenz to lol

  • Thank you Maria! :)

  • Oh BTW- the cake is beautiful! You did great on the buttercream finish! ....I'm actually starting to like doing buttercream finishes :)

  • Wow, thanks Laura! Yes this did help me! I think I am safe with what ever brush I choose that I showed you. It's the compressor that is the more expensive part. I don't think I will go with that smallest compressor though. Compared to yours well.....lol! Yours is just huge, lol! I'm so excited, my husband is buying one for my 30th birthday :o)

  • You're welcome Kerry! You're gonna LOVE your airbrush and you won't know how you got along without it! Thanks for the compliment on my cake! :)
