  • DICK @ 2:11 :D

  • Thus therefore there must be something right in regular imagery in film, because it has been proven to stand it's own in time. Until ofcourse, Lucas totally sold out to the CGI hysteria in the 1990's, hence completely lost his touch of originality and ingenuity he had some 20 years earlier. Too Bad. But I'm not worried, because I think filmmakers are slowly starting to realize this more and more. Just as bellbottoms were cool in 1974, CGI might have been cool in 1998. but it is getting old now.

  • Or, as well as the bell bottoms pants from the 1970's, they all look comic and corny today. And the outdated CGI from 1990's already looks very fake and corny today. So the question really is, should CGI REALLY TAKE OVER GOOD'OL FILM??? Or should CGI technology be something for it self, and let film be film. The (1977) Star Wars still stands out today, 35 years later, without the 3D CGI, or (1968) Odyssey in Space 2001, still stands out 44 years later.

  • This CGI hysteria started as a competition among movies made between mid 1990's until now. Showing off who has better "More Expensive" Computer Equipment. However, because of this Total "Fashionable" CGI Hysteria in film, there is now as a result, Lack of Storyline, total lack of ingenuitive character development, and just very little originality in film any more, what so ever. Thus therefore, just as the futuristic hysteria visions of the 1950's and early 60's cars and architecture,

  • Hence that which is subconscience is actually really the preferable.5. And probably the most important reason is. Because CGI is a Fashion. A temporary thing, yet not necessary at all, as modern feature films have been made for good 65 years before CGI took over, and they had just as much of quality and magic, without CGI. However, it was something "new" and "hip" some 20 years ago when it started, so naturally people went along with it for a while. CGI hysteria started as a competition in 90's.

  • 4. Although people love animation (usually as humor), however, in real life, human subconscience relates with reality of an image, not a realistic reproduction of that reality. Eventhough on the surface we might admire the progress of technology behind it, we subconsciously still prefer the realistic image of our reality. Hence we dream real images, not CGI animated reproduction of faces. No matter how weird the dream might be, it is still a realistic image, when we dream it.

  • cgi started supprisingly a long time ago, hitchcock used it in vertigo, an you have the king kong films.

  • can you use CGI to make a 5'11'' man into 10' without looking like a tree?

  • AVATAR (biggest film ever, most expensive film ever, best cgi ever, best film ever) it made 2.7 BILLION

  • @danzillaman Avatar is the fakest looking CG film yet. Jurassic Park 1+2 and Star Wars Episode I managed to look completely real with many of their effects, yet the biggest most advanced CG film now looks like a bad video game. It's only been going downhill.

And it's because the early CG films had pro's working on them these days video game kids with no knowledge of real filmmaking are behind the computer screens.

  • Compare the kraken from clash of the titans 1980 and 2010 the new one is cgi the old one is stop motion then see what movies will be without it no jurassic park, tron, and avatar

  • Cgi can make films alot cooler without it movies would be boring and alot of cars in movies are cgi aswell

  • i hate CGI in movies!!!

  • I Swear on Michael Jackson's tombstone, An American Tail has CGI!!

  • Nostalgic people feel offended when someone thinks that the "new" is better... Nostalgic people are like rocks blocking the path to the future...

Whenever I hear a nostalgic person talk... I can feel a certain anger mixed with anxiety... Nostalgic people basically live to smash their "enemies" opinions by humiliating and disqualifying their "enemies"...

PS: This comment is a outflow...

  • Too bad this was made in 2007, they could have added Avatar if it was 2011 or 2010.

  • I like how some old 80s and 70s people hate CGI without giving a legitamite reason.

  • @Trekiefreak777 I'am not in my 80's or 70's but alot of people don't like CGI because it looks fake compare to old movies with lots of extras and real people. It just looks fake when like 70% of the movie is CGI, some CGI is ok but when everything including explosions or something huge on the screen is CGI it just looks unrealistic.

  • @AUG351 Actually, it only looks unrealistic if it just wasn't done right. The thing goes with puppets, which did suck in the early days, but got better as the technicians got more experienced. George Lucas remarks about comparing puppets to CGI: "They're both fake. What's the difference?"

  • @Trekiefreak777 The difference is Yoda in return of the jedi was real. The difference is the bear in AI was real. The difference is the cars in blade runner can really fly and the robot suit used in the end of aliens really works and the queen was a real monster.

Or at least they damn well look real as fuck. CG just only ever looks fake.

  • CGI is also acroynm for different things, so its pointless to argue wat it actually means :)

in this case, we refer it to either Computer-generated imageries or computer guided illusion.. or any that makes sense in this area :)

  • what have been missed out:

    The Perfect Storm

    Avatar

Elephants Dream (first open-source animated short to be used and produced using Blender, an open-source 3D app)

    correction:

Autodesk Maya is also used in Jurrasic Park,The Abyss and Terminator 2.. even in LOTR: Fellowship of the Ring (2001).. way before Spider-Man (which actually is release in 2002)

  • can someone tell me the name of that tech were it showed a captain america guy skinny like, then they applied some algorithms and it could made him look fat, ripped, etc, in real time. I saw it a few years ago but forgot the name. There's a video here too. Really freaking cool!

  • @xStalkerxx in Captain America its the reverse.. they make the actor, who is actually buff, skinny..

    fxguide.com/featured/case-study-how-to-make-a-captain-america-wimp/

  • i miss "the last starfighter"

  • I realy hate when you newbs call it CGI. The Truth is that CGI is just a company that puts out 3D graphics. There is no technical word, yet only by the design of the company as in defintion. The REAL term came from Gooey or better known as GUI. You ppl sound like idiots to REAL programmers that use.. Common Gateway Interface (CGI) is a standard that defines how web server software can delegate the generation of web pages to a stand-alone application or an executable file. known as CGI scripts

  • @LendMeYourHand oh really? I thought CGI stands for Computer Graphic Images.

  • @giriisindahouse CGI is a serverside scripting executable web based programming language. It was designed to preload scripting such as Java, which are not commonly packaged or installed on standard OS. This better allows programmers to use their own scripting builds without the viewer needing to download the scripts. Most 3-D graphics are designed thru software such as 3D Studio Max. So a company that produces 3D get a plug everytime someone says CGI, as if they do all graphics on the market.

  • A lot of this is also mentioned in the 3d world magazine

  • 2:11 dats a small penor o.O

  • Is it just me, or does the CG from twenty years ago feel more real then the crap we get these days?

  • @kovona Especially in the 90's (In my opinion ) I think sometimes their getting a little carried away with this 3D & HD stuff now days

  • @celticguardian951 Yeah, they need to remember that CGI is just a tool. You can't overuse it in place of a good story and cast. If you can't connect audiences to the story or characters, having out of proportion special effects just makes things worse by making everything feel fake.

  • Actors working with CGI.... must make them feel really foolish just to be talking to blank air.

  • transformers...........

  • i wish stop-motion would come back.

  • I wonder what computer graphic in video games and movies will look like in 25 years? I wonder how long it will take before it's so realistic you can't distinguish it from reality at all? I wonder if actors will be replaced?

  • Coool

  • Two things missing: "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" & "The Last Starfighter".

  • Jurassic Park OWNS all

  • Where the F*CK is Harry Potter???

  • CGI doesn't suck, some of it can be really beautifull ,like in videogames watch the final fantasy 13 CGI

  • no like in movies

  • @nana101ify Shrek? Transformers? Robots? Iron Man they're all complete bullshit and so are the star wars prequels

  • @nana101ify Computer-generated imagery

  • What is cgi excactly ?

  • I wish CGI was never created, it sucks

  • @TheRitchardgaleHater it dosent imagine transformers without it imagine iron man etc

  • @TheRitchardgaleHater your stupid cgi rocks whats to hate about it it makes things look more realistic instead of old and cheesy your just one of those hypocrites who thinks everything new sucks but deep down you know it is awesome come on do you thing it would have been possible to create something like i robot, 2012, lord of the rings, and avatar, with out making it look "cheesy and fake" without cgi if you hate cgi than you hate technology but yet i bet you cant wait for the new iphone uh lol

  • @chichiko56 I know that alot of movies couldn't be created if it wasn't for CGI, and I'm thankful for that, but there are so many movies out there that use to mkuch CGI. Little CGI in a movie couldn't hurt but to much is to much, just look at Men In Black. And just because I don't like CGI doesn't mean I hate all the new technology lol XD kid.

Think before you write, your comment made you look stupid

  • Toy Story, Luxo Jr?, Terminator 2? yes you really missed a lot. But still interesting.

  • The turtles look fake

  • Comment removed

  • Jurassic Park wins.

  • When did it get that bland faded color look?

  • Pretty good compiliation.

  • You missed a lot...

  • @Hermoor 2007...

  • The matrix wasnt the 1st to use bullet time effect It was BLADE

  • I thought that was Warren on the operating table there for a second.

  • Does anyone know if basically 2001 - 2011 it's just been polishing (in terms of rendering quicker and pulling of slightly more realistic stuff : cloth, hair, etc)? Actually even since 1995 (toy story) because I can't see MUCH difference. Hollowman/abyss looks a little bit outdated, but Jurassic Park, LOTR etc... could be released in 2011 and would still win awards.

  • Red vs. Blue

  • The first ever cgi animated filmwas the 1973 movie "Tubby the tuba." However, most if not all the CGI scenes were replaced with hand drawn at some point

  • TMNT ?!?!?! are you kiddnin me ?

  • Spider-Man was released in 2002.

  • Bygt

  • a nice video however you should have reasurched more

  • thank you

  • cgi is crazy stuff

  • By the way... your Scenes were of the Digitally Remastered Version of Star Wars, the Vector 3D Scenes where the turning Death Star at the Briefing, and the Aiming Computer visualisation of the Death star "canyon"

  • No mention of Terminator 2??? Dragonheart??

and you actually mentioned Two Towers but said nothing about Gollum!!!

    HELLLLOOOOO?!?!?!

  • Whoa. No mention of The Last Starfighter? Or perhaps the most ahead-of-its-time CGI work ever... Dragon Heart?

  • Where's "The Last Starfighter"?

  • que animal esse video !!

como que se chama essa música do Sin city ??

  • Whaat? Where's Toy Story? First ever feature length entire CG film

  • A-hem! Where is Babylon 5!

  • shoulda included polar express. those are some of the most realistic renders i've seen (beside sfinal fantasy)

    anyway that was pretty cool

  • Aki Ross from Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within holds the record for being the most complex GCI character created.

  • -God bless cgi artists-

  • 0:28 and the music goes

    pew pew pew!!!

  • Spiderman first use of MAYA?!!?! No I don't think so mate

  • MAX HEADROOM ;)

  • terminator 2

toy story - first entirely cgi film

oh brother where art thou - first film entirely digitally color corrected

  • Films, like jurassic park, and lotr, there needed cgi, but fuck, do we really need cgi in a simple action movie, like in the The Expendables?

  • that music was cool..

  • You forgot Futureworld used a CG hand.

  • in e.t. (2002) version e.t. was cgi in sone scenes (cornfield scene, when gertie sees e.t., etc.)

  • silver surfer its bassicaly T-1000 with a board

  • @eMPaNaH

yea back in the 80's or whatever it would have been impressive but fantastic four 2 was not a mindblowing cgi film.

The entire terminator series, however, MINDBLOWING! CGI arnold?!

  • @asdf932 i know, i totally agree with u.

  • Jurassic Park is where it all began.

  • there is computer graphics in the original starwars (the hologram views of the dark star) but I am agree with star trek 2, Toy Story and T2 ...

  • Kevin Bacon's Penis!

  • forget about Final fantasy: The spirits within...should of added Final fantasy: advent children now thts some great CG..

  • @bhermoth They only show the first CGI record..beside FF is horrible movie with all girls look alike characters

  • wow they were preety much ahead of time

  • funny how people love Avatar but hate the Star Wars prequels "because of CGI"

*shrug* guess there has to be something to moan about

  • only thime they used cgi in old star wars was the wireframe projection of death star interior.

  • you forgot to metion toy story the first animated film to made entirly from cgi!

  • The Last Starfighter?

  • terminater 2?

  • 2:13 PENIS!!!!

  • @pivoteking wow thank you CAPTAIN OBVIOUS

  • Advent Children should have been in this, the most incredible CG movie ever created.

  • No Toy Story or more importantly, no Terminator 2? Oh dear! Someone hasn't done their homework.

  • Where the fuck is Toy Story?

  • worst cgi i seen in a movie was in howard the duck

  • Spiderman used Lightwave 3d not Maya

  • The Abyss water effect, for 1989, was really goddamn good. Holds up well, no surprise it's James Cameron.

  • ok 3 things that make me hate youtube

that annoying ball button that serves ABSOLUTELY NO PURPOSE except waist of space maybe

the fact that some comments instead of saying "ok" say "error try again"

and no matter how you try it will always say that

and third lately the videos not loading automatically

  • perfect vid

  • DO MORE RESEARCH! (and get better music)

  • King Kong does not seem that old.

  • @jayrellz its a remake

  • @TreehouseMovieStudio No, I'm sayin that it doesn't seem like it came out in 2005, maybe late 2006.

  • Sin City shouldn't even be included in this video.. it was the worst movie this planet has seen to date..

  • Hey, you forgot something very important, the Time machine from 2002, the first movie using a new format of colors of all time, And cool vid, what is the name of the song?

  • Star Wars had no CGI originally. Spider-man came out in 2002. So did The Two Towers. The Fellowship of the Ring came out in 2001 and used AI. Pleasantville had a similar effect to Sin City, and it came out in 1998. Spy Kids 3-D and Star Wars Ep. 2 were also done like Sin City and they both came out before it too.

  • @raymond18 Actually, before the "Special Edition" in '97, Star Wars did have computer graphics in it, just no PHOTOREALISTIC CGI. The Death Star attack briefing scene used real 1970's vector graphics to illustrate the attack plan (look up Larry Cuba, computer graphics artist on Star Wars. Also, remember the tactical displays on the Millennium Falcon's gun turrets; same thing.

  • @khentoumi Oh yeah.

  • Very nice video, thanks for creating/sharing :) Too bad it missed many new films, such as Avatar, Wall-E...

  • they forgot the last starfighter

  • I like cgi and it will eventualy look REAL and that cgi look and feel will be solved. Avatar was extremely close and cgi has already improved since avatar. Compare the cgi in the star wars prequels to Avatar-big improvement-maybe avatar 2 will have cgi that looks real;)

  • Comment removed

  • The best balance of cgi in a film (that I've seen) was The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe. It was a very believable film, because cgi was only used in places where actual props would have looked cheesy. Yes, yes, lotr, I know. But, I'm gonna have to blaspheme movie history and say that the cgi in LOTR was just overwhelming. The whole movie ende up looking like it was made out of dough.

  • @NoogahOogah golden compass beats lion witch wardrobe with cg

how about looker and tron 1982 ouh and roger rabbit ! 1988

i think first full-length non-toon 3d cgi movie was final fantasy spirit within!

the abyss is most over looked film of all time because over 95% of it was real but many thought it was cg only thing that wasn't real was the water particle ,other fx films lens man and ghost in the shell animation ,not forgetting pupet-motion darkcrystal and labyrinth (also had cg characters)

  • So many errors that it seems like you are making things up.. cgi in 1977 starwars ??? come on !!!

  • don't like CGI anymore...it's good in moderation but now it's just used a bit too much and it's so obvious that it isn't real

  • I dislike cgi in movies unless its for depicting static / non living items., If its overuse in movies carry's on i think it would be the death of the film industry. They only use it because it cheaper and quicker to dish out commercial crap without a storyline / or talent. BRING BACK REAL MODELS AND PROSTHETIC'S. Lord of the rings had a very good balance but again cgi dosnt scale well against real life backdrops so it looks fake. IE i think they should have used some costume /makeup for gollum

  • @favsncrap no one really gives two loads of semen if you dislike cgi or not

  • @o0zeroeffect0o Thats not exactly what i said, you result of a split condom. PS I guess your impotent then by your comment and you assume women have balls, Faggot!

  • BUBU there's a lot of mistake in this retrospective !!!

you should adding the experiment of the first facial test by University of Utah with the Gouraud shading from "Henry Gouraud", and no, Maya was no used in the first time in Spiderman, but in movie like "The Mummy" 1998 and " Starwars" 1999 in the end of the 90's.^^ and Toys Story was not mentioned like says the other.

  • Where have i heard this music before???

  • @viplovem

Sin City trailer? (that's where i heard it from)

  • @proudtobeirish77 yea i remembered that right after i messaged u...lol

  • what the hell happened to Toy Story

    First ever 3d animated movie

before that they were cartoons which was 2D

First word in CGI dictionary is 3D, and there is no toy story

  • cgi was used in black and white films before west world.

  • Teenagae mutant and Fantastic Four, have nothing to do in the history of CGI. And Terminator 2, Titanic, and Toy Story are missing.

  • 300 missing.CGI technique in slow-motion fighting scenes,legs and arms flying around,realistic blood,it was a hard job.

  • I think Jurassic Park is where it all began... The mother of all CGI movies.

  • @Flash11I19 yes it is

  • @Flash11I19

Actually the first CGI creature in a film was a movie Spielberg produced called Young Sherlock Holmes.

Not to mention the water tentacle from the movie The Abyss made by James Cameron.

  • @Flash11I19 For me the big wows stopped at Jurassic Park. But continued with games. We could probably do the same level of effects in real time on a home PC by 2014. You might like "No Fate But What We Make: 'Terminator 2' and the Rise of Digital Effects" (2003) and Issue 55 of CineFX magazine. A lot of Jurassic Park stuff with all the old ads including Alias Wavefront.

  • @Flash11I19 Terminator

  • Well i would say there should a lot more names in this video, and if you named this video the Gistory of CGI why you didnt put the films wich really made the history companys like pixar ILM dreamworksthey all have putted a lot of work into the century where a 12 year old child can make something simillar on his home computer. They are the legends.

  • No Last Starfighter, Terminator 2, Star Trek or Toy Story.

  • why dont u add those to your cgi history video ? he did a good job, appearently he worked on it..

  • No mention of the first real CGI in Star Trek 2 (the Genesis Project) which came out shortly before Tron, no mention of Terminator 2 and all of it's CGI innovations, no Pixar mention with the first completely CG movie with Toy Story....? Yet forgetable crap like TMNT andFantastic Four 2 are mentioned? FAIL.

  • Toy Story is mandatory when talking about the evolution of CGI

  • ya i was so surprised that was left out.

  • He just jumps from The Mask to The Matrix?

Weird, no mention of Reboot either?

  • @scottrobertsweb Well, you can't update videos, but if you could, I think he would. Don't flame him so much.

  • @scottrobertsweb Futureworld was the first use of 3D graphics in cinema ever. I strongly suggest this video's author to go do some further research to make this work more historically accurate.

  • @PrinceOfAstoria I agree, even the total recall shot was a practical effect!

  • @scottrobertsweb some of you are mentioning are after 2007 and the video was put here at that time but you have point.

  • missed out "The Last Starfighter" :-)

  • NICE! the music also goes great with the video!

  • I love total recall :D

  • WHERE'S TOY STORY?!?!?! :P

  • nice! spider man was awesome!

  • Great video, although you forgot to mention about Star Trek II (the Genesis sequence). I loved Tron movie released in July/82, but still, Star Trek II was released 1 month earlier, in June, that makes it the pionneer in terms of a full rendered 3D CG animation to be inserted in a movie.

  • The Abyss, plus it's CG was a hit for me,,,its made after my birth by one year,,,lol

  • a++++++++++++

  • i want to be a cg artist sooooo bad!!!

  • Try Blender. At first it's complicated to use, but after a few tutorials you will get the hang of it. It's open source, but more capable than some commercial software.

  • TOY STORY is DEFINITELY missing. It was the first feature length movie to be done ONLY using cgi and it was a REALLY BIG deal that made it into cgi history.

  • It's amazing what they were able to do with Jurassic Park. The t rex in that movie looks so real. Even King Kong t rexes looks more fake than the one in Jurassic Park.

  • The closeups in Jurassic Park were animatronic puppets. Only in the wider shots the far less detailed 3D-dinosaurs were used.

  • i perferd it when it was used as a tool rather then the whole set also something is missing i dont know if its to do with hardware as the amiga and indy systems was graphically more advanced but painfully slow to pcs or if its artist rushing in a fast paced world rather then the please wait loading , take a chill pill one, but yeah although physics have come along way i perfer the oldskool to the pc split second stuff

  • 1:10 Total Recall. This is a puppet, all practical, no CGI. Rob Bottin credited.

  • In Total Recall CGI was only used for the blocky view from the robot's perspective. Total Recall 2 was the first feature-length movie to use 3D-animation.

  • Great compilation!!! But Terminator 2 should surely be up there among the top First CGI movies!!! Even people from ILM will agree that Jurassic Park CG effects would not have been possible if they had done Abyss and Terminator 2 beforehand!!!

  • U're right mate. According to Dennis Murren T2 is the "Breakthrough" when it comes to CGI.

    Cheers Bruh!! ;)

  • This video makes me proud to be a CG artist =D

  • you guys are genius !! :)

  • great vid, would just like to point out one thing regarding the bullet time CG.

Bullet time CG was 1st used in the Movie BLADE,

when Stephen Dorf is holding the little girl hostage in the middle of the park and Blade fires a single round which puts the camera in a slow-mo.

other than that, screw the dates.

this is still a great homage to CG

    6/5
