I was going to watch this streamed live on NASA - but couldn't believe it when IE crashed 30 seconds out! Gee thanks microsoft - any way - thanks for getting this up so quickly - I love how cool headed the mission controllers are - and the female talking through the stages - well does it get any better...don't think so.
the voice of the girl speaking sound hot :P

@GuitarDude314: Thanks, man! I thought that's what it was, but wasn't sure of the proper terminology.

I saw this launch in person..video (while great) does not do justice to actually seeing the event.
Truely an awesome sight.

What is the main purpose of those sparks underneath the 3 main engines? Cooling or something?? Interesting stuff! Thanks for posting!

That's igniting the engines buddy.
GuitarDude314 2 years ago
Actually, the flames are used to clear out excess hydrogen stemming from the engines.

No, the sparks, not the flame
GuitarDude314 2 years ago
that's what I meant, the sparks. Ignition takes place in the combustion chamber of the SSME

The first female voice you hear is NASA Launch commentator Candrea Thomas counting down the seconds.

I thought the shuttle needed to reach 11 km/s to escape earth's gravity?
The speed upon which the main fuel tank separated was still under 8 km/s (under 18,000mph)
CapnToll 2 years ago
8 km/s to reach an low earth orbit and stay there.
11 km/s is needed to escape earth's gravity, for another planet for example.

Thanks!
I found some literature speaking of 11 km/s required at 9000km above the earth...so now that makes sense.

They better have a chick talking given the billion dollars by which they habitually go over-budget at NASA.
