  • DEEEEE-TROIT!

  • the only I knew about was the undisputed truth's version.about 7 or 8 years ago I heard the temptations version.I admit,i don't even want to hear UT's version anymore.the strings and the instruments on this song are amazing!

  • man this is the real decadent sound of Detroit and I was privileged to sing with the UNDISPUTED TRUTH on STAGE at The Star-wood in Hollywood late seventies I was under-aged and all wow ...only white cat too-they were in slow motion painted silver and so decadent!!! Mark and Mary were their I had just performed at my own local concert...first real R&B experience...PROFOUND A Smile Turned Upside Down

  • A Smile is just a frown turned upside down, WORD !!!!!

  • A smile is just a frown turned upside down, RIGHT !!!!

  • No doubt about it! This is get up and get down music. They don't play this stuff on the radio anymore.

  • do smiling faces ever tell tha truth?

  • Was diggin on this song back in the day . Still great Psycadelic rock soul . The Temps many songs bring very good memories. Thank you for posting. "Pako"

  • Thank You for posting as much as you could!!! GO YOU!!! Will

  • @RIDETHESUNSHINE Lol thank you and no problem!! :-)

  • This was one of the many songs that I grew up with and loved. I don't remember this version of Smiling Faces although it is quite good. The one I remember is the one that seems to be attributed to "The Undisputed Truth". But damn if the male singer does not sound like Jerry Butler!! Can anyone (DiscoNights) let me know if I am suffering from dementia or what!

  • hey

  • its alright but I like the other version by the undisputed truth.

  • Norman Whitfield took a cue from the Beatles and the Doors that long versions with instrumental interludes create a theme that can run throughout an album-transforming it from a collection of singles to a thematically connected vision that stands as a single connected theme and message. Brilliant !

  • This is THE SHIT

  • Never heard this version b4. Not bad. Check out David Ruffins version. I think the vocals of David's version is better than The Undisputed Truth's. But I like the instrument arrangments better on The Truth's version. Just my opinion. What do u think?

  • Turn it up!!!

  • the smooth sound of eddie kindricks.....thanks

  • i love the biggining bass in this song

  • Not hating, because I loved the Psychedelic era Tempts songs ALMOST as much as the Golden era Tempts, but it seemed like by this time, Norman Whitfield was becoming something of a mad scientist and his ego was making the Temptations albums his laboratory. That's why you have these 4 minute instrumental breaks. No Tempts, just Norman's production.

  • hey, thanks for the reply, very kool, david coffey right on!!, i also really like the guitar intro on Who"s That Lady, i dont know the band , i think O"Jays?

  • @mondotrasho666 You are talking about the Isley Brothers, not the O'Jays. The lead guitarist for them is Ernie Isley.

  • THE LEAD GUITAR IS GREAT!! IN THIS VERSION!!

  • @mondotrasho666 i beleive the lead guitarist is david coffey, dont mark me on it but i think it is him

  • @mjjcng8958 You mean Dennis Coffey. You could be right, but I think around this time, Cornelius Grant was playing guitar on many of the Tempts records, so that is also a possibility.

  • @emmettk i found out that coffey played on the undisputed truth version

  • This song has TRUTH to it,,especially when it comes to FAMILY!....

  • Funk. Brothers.

  • love the intro guitar

  • Great history lesson. Didn't know that N.W. would have more than one group cut the same songs. Also, I wonder if there would have been two versions of this from the Temptations. They could have done it the way Undisputed Truth and this way. Wow!!

Thanks for allowing me to hear this version.

  • i got a question poster, good song, good upload ..thanks...regarding youtube post, how come when you surf youtube you find some videos that are 14 15 or sometimes several hours long?? just wondering if the ten minute limit exists how the others do it...thanks

  • @flyinghotwing When I uploaded this video three years ago, there used to be a 10 minute limit on video uploads. Now the limit has been increased to 15 mins and has been like this for about a year now.

  • yes this is a good tune ,,but give cedit where cedit it due the temps did good vocals but the great sounds where made by the Funk Bros they made this song and many others GREAT

  • OUTSTANDING!!!!! Eddie just flows on this smooth, haunting, musical masterpiece....BIG up to Mr. Norman Whitield. He was a genius who was totally underrrated.

  • ...the truth is in the eyes cuz the eyes don't lie... amen. LOL !!- Thats damn right!!

  • kendricks and franklin doing whitfield masterpiece,i can listen to everyday...........thanks

  • omg why aren't people like this running USA. Obama is trying, but i pray for all of us. why are the best people treated so bad. GOD help LORD JESUS.

  • This is the late great Norman Whitfields testimony to his relationship with Berry Gordy and the Motown machine.

  • Four people have smiling faces.

  • OL SCHOOL BUT ITS THE TRUE EVEN TODAY, I WAS IN THE ARMY WHEN THIS SONG CAME OUT, I WAS ON MY WAY BACK TO TH WORLD FROM THE NAM

  • Eddie is straight gangsta on that pic. Lord, I didn't know The Temps sung this originally. I like this much better than The Undisputed Truth.

  • Back in the day this was meant to caution blacks that racists came in many forms. The out and out rednecks, easy to avoid, and the courteous whites who would slap you on the back promise you a job . Then the job was sweeping up.

Or even more poignantly: Fellow blacks who would tie you into recording contracts that kept you from earning any money. I am surprised Barry Gordy let this out to be recorded.

  • This is THE version of this song. Any other version pales in comparison.

  • the original and greatessst

  • love this song tell it all about backstabbers

  • Audio Bullys basically sampled this with "Smiling Face" :)

  • I wish i could find a music provider so i could download this song. It was originally on the album "The Sky's The Limit". I always liked it. I want to load it on my MP3 for my workouts.

  • i never knew they sung this song, i thought it was another group that did this song

  • @lrwsoreal "Smiling Faces Sometimes" was covered by The Undisputed Truth. The song was designated to be the follow-up release to The Temptations' "Just My Imagination." However, Eddie Kendricks had just left the group and had a prominent lead vocal in "Smiling Faces" so producer Norman Whitfield decided to release The Undisputed Truth's version instead which went top 5.

  • @HoneyKone what about "the dramatics"?

  • this version is great! BUT I DON'T KNOW where i can listen to this song: which ALBUM IS?????

  • @83bubble It's off the Sky's The Limit album.

  • @DiscoNights1987

    thank you so much!

  • @83bubble No problem! :-)

  • @DiscoNights1987 It took me a long time seaching but I have the album in mint condition.

  • @DiscoNights1987 It took me a long time seaching but I have the album in mint condition. I love my old school which I grew up with.

  • @83bubble te album is "sky´s the limit"

  • @83bubble I'ts From The Sky's The Limit LP

  • @83bubble "Sky's the Limit" may no longer be in print on CD (it might be cheaper to find it on vinyl record). "Smiling Faces Sometimes" is also on the Temptations CD compilation "Psychedelic Soul".

  • :-)*~~~SmIliNg fAcEs tElL lIeS ...

  • LOVE IT !

Sounds like a Big Movie Soundtrack

  • omygosh! ..i must say this is my first time hearing this song, but i love it soo much. just another great song to add to favorites from the temptations:)

  • I don't choose UT version over the Tempts because Norman Whitfield produced both versions if I'm not mistaking. That's the mark of a genius-same producer two different styles and sounds. I love this version because of the orchestra.

  • @jrynds You r so correct as a matter of fact the UT did it first, and that some of the musicans who played on both tracks were members who were to become "Rose Royce"

  • @WildWicks

The UT also did "Papa Was A Rolling Stone"before The Temps. Not a lot of people know that.

  • @WildWicks

The Undisputed Truth also did "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" before The Temptations. Not a lot of people know that, but it's a fact.

  • @cmulwee001 I think all fans from Motown Record know it!

  • @MrRelax49

Well that's great! And as far as "...Grapevine" goes, I think Smokey did it the best of all, and there's no doubt that Marvin Gaye patterned his version after Smokey's,rather than Gladys'. And speaking of Gladys Knight, did you know that her smash hit "Midnight Train To Georgia" was originally a country song? That's right, it was called "Midnight Plane To Houston" , and was originally recorded by it's writer, Jim Weatherly.

  • The Mighty Temptations are amazing there is no one else like them. I grew up on this song at it is so true. Beware of the pat on the back. so real, so real.

  • The Mighty Temptations are amazing there is no one else like them. I grew up on this song at it is so true. Beware of the pat on the back. so real, so real.

  • the instrumentals in temptations songs are groovy, why would anybody dislike them

  • @brybrytrudy Producer Norman Whitfield and Arranger Paul Riser really worked the Funk Brothers and The Detroit Symphony on this one !

  • @brybrytrudy because they are the smiling faces that tell lies

  • This is okay, but for my tastes the Undisputed Truth did this song WAAAAAAAY better. The song lacks the vibrancy of UT's vocals.

  • I love The Dramatics version too. Love this song.

    Remember a smile is just

    A frown turned upside down

  • @pjubagoni

That's "The Undisputed Truth", you are talking about. The Dramatics did not sing this.

  • @mschest OK, thanks ;))

  • BEST VERSION!

  • the funk is nice. lyrics on point. somebody been there before.

  • wow ....

  • Smiling faces sometimes.....pretends is right. On a personal stand point this song is appropriate in alot of cases, most cases. On a musical stand point its a brilliant song sung beautifully by the Tempting Temptations....

  • Yep, this version is heads and shoulders over The Undisputed Truth version (not that the UT version is bad).

  • skipping a lot at the beginning

  • I am amazed, I had no idea that they sang this song. I thought it was undisputed truth.

  • @grosskopf2 ..Want to be really amazed??? Listen to the David solo cut of this tune..it's posted..

  • @echarvalkeem its the Temptations they originally recorded this track and Whitfield redid it the same year for Undisputed Truth...

  • @echarvalkeem its the Temptations they originally recorded this track and Whitfield redid it the same year for Undisputed Truth...

  • I never knew this existed. superior soul at its best, flowing like massive attack. this is one bad tune (way cool), thanks for posting it. kind of like Masterpiece by them.

  • i teach this to my grand kids, only try to school em not fool em

  • Undisputed Truth can't touch the Tall, Tanned, Terrible, Too much TEMPTATIONS !!!!!!!!!!!! Best GROUP ever. Some had leads maybe a tad better but, not five who could sing, step, and perform as one

  • one of the most haunting melodies of the era.......erie shit!! lol

  • excellent picture show, great, goes with the song perfect, wish i could copy it. awesome version of a great song...this version almost has a psychedelic feel...

  • WOW!!!!!

  • Funk Brothers ! One of the greatest Detroit bands of all time!!!!

  • This is such a classic arrangement .Know that they don't lay tracks like this anymore.. This is ALL about the music! and this is Grown Folks music! I have a very scratched up vinyl album of with this song and I still can't bring myself to throw it out. My favorite part is from 7.37+ with all that lush arrangement...strings 'N thangs, thumping bass and funky Blaxploitation guitar riff !! Thanks for posting!

  • I danced to this until my feet bled and kept going, the Whole song, over and over. YES!

  • Wow! They did it difference! Love the Temptations!! I know one died!

  • @LYNXVAL More than one..

  • i think david's version was a little bit better but they both are great

  • The Temptations could cover any song and make it sound original!

  • i love that cover artwork, great album of it's time

  • always loved the orchestration. Shows that black folks can work wonders if more than a guitar, bass, and drums.

  • I've read more than one place, that had Eddie not left the group when he did, this would have been the next single out of "Sky's The Limit" after Just My Imagination. That both is and isn't a shame when you ponder how Motown might have slashed it up length-wise to make it radio friendly. Just My Imagination was strong enough alone to make you buy the album, and once you discovered this too, you never forgot it.

  • I remember some classmates started their own band (Woodward Elementary School,Detroit),we had great teachers, Mr. Smith-instrumental, Miss Dickey-glee club. They were good enough to catch the ear of Berry Gordy. I was in high school, when they told me that Kendricks was leaving to start a solo career. When I told my friends, ( by then were were at different schools)they did not believe me until a few months later when it came true. No the band-classmates-did not make it; each went his own way.

  • Was it not originally from Undisputed Truth and was then covered by The Temptations and Rare Earth? I thought so...

  • Motown has always had different groups/soloists cover the same songs. Example, I Heard it Through the Grapevine, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Marvin Gaye. "Get Ready Cause Here I Come" Temptations, Rare Earth. I was in elementary school when the Temps did "Get Ready...I was in High School when Rare Earth did it. Smokey!!!! Holland-Dozier-Holland!!!

  • @elaineDPW

What a lot of people don't know about "I Heard It Through The Grapevine", is that it was first done by Smokey Robinson and The Miracles, and then the Isley Brothers. It's just that Gladys Knight And The Pips were the first to have a hit with it.

  • My favorite song by the Temps and the BEST version

  • Awesome! Thanks!

  • i love the instrumentation in this song

  • Thanks for going through that grueling process to uploading it at all. YouTube is ridiculous when it comes to minute limits. LOL Thanks. :)

  • awesome dynmite back the 70s, still great and going strong

  • david had an illness addiction forgive him some can handle it some cant, check yo self out before you lay tags

  • barret strong and norman whitfield at there best and kendricks, edwards, williams, blue and oats too boot.......thanks

  • Norman Whitfield is a genius.

  • Comment removed

  • I think the Temps lost something after they kicked David Ruffin out

  • they lost a junkie who didn`t show up for rehersals and concerts...........cocaine will break up the best of unions

  • norman was very clever-he would always record the same song and give it to Gladys, Temps.,Marvin, and U.T.-and get producer's credit on each album. George Clinton did it also. Clever.

  • i have the sky's the limit album!

  • @bjc19199 People always get it twisted that The Undisputed Truth were teh first to do this song. "Sky's The Limit" came out long before the Undisputed Truth's version. This is the killer here!

  • @bjc19199 me too got the original copy along w/solid rock ........thanks

  • This is a really good version, but my favourite is the one from Rare Earth on "Ma" album.

  • I like this version 10 times better than U.T.'s. I had the album when it first came out.

  • @DocRsuperstar I still have the original album "Sky's the limit"

  • My family owned a copy of the Psychedelic Shack album, which is shown at the beginning of this video. I assume that this song was on that album, but I don't recall it at all. Until now I'd always believed that the Undisputed Truth recorded the original version of Smiling Faces. I still prefer the U.T.'s version, but this one isn't bad.

  • This song is from the Sky's The Limit album

  • you can check out wikipedia on the creator .songwriter producer Whitfield" who had many great hits with the temps .and later he re did this with "undisputed truth" .it shook me as a ten year old white kid in NJ.check out my new version on my page if you'd like.

this is my first hearing this version.

    thanks for sharing

  • I love it Damn good!

  • R u fuckin serious oh my God hearin the Temps re-do this song has just gave me a cold chill!!

  • @mannishboy69 This is the original version of the song

  • They didnt redo this song. They sung this song originally. It wasnt released as a single because Eddie Kendricks quit the group to go solo. But yeah this song is awesome

  • @mannishboy69 The Temps sang the original. Undisputed Truth did the re-make and thier version was the hit version. Temps didn't release it because Eddie left around this time.

  • one word..."wow"

  • ca pas été samplé par 2bal 2 neg pour accepte mon concept??

  • pure magic.............thanks

  • call the law!

  • An officer is being dispatched and is on the way.

  • Hey ! ! ! Where's the last 61 seconds of this song ? ! Everybody start raking the bars of your cells with your metal cups ! --- Riot ! ! !

  • This is a gorgeous symphony of 'Soul' type piece !

  • le plus grand morceau des temptations!!! avec "hurry tomorrow" thanks for this great sound!!!!!

  • wow! this is really, really cool. my dad told about this music. he had only heard it once. i think in the 70's. a local "disc jockey "played the entire song on the radio. it was the first and last time he heard the long version until today. thank you so much for posting this vid

  • @ 1:55 notice how all the temptation members that died early are sitting in the middle and the ones still living are on the edges....weird...

  • Comment removed

  • Good thing u put the this long version!

  • Funk Bros. were great on this cut, But, Love David solo version...

  • undisputed truth's version was the BEST..

  • This version epitomizes why I'm glad that Berry Gordy gave Norman Whitfield the keys to the house and car in terms of production and creative control. Everyone gets major credit on this track - the arrangement is incredible; The Temps doing their thing, The Funk Brothers right there in the pocket, the dramatic buildup of the orchestra and the urgent acceleration of tempo as the track moves along. Excellent, excellent song.

  • @6ft6cutie Well said!

  • @6ft6cutie yup true don't forget my man Barrett Strong he co-wrote many of these songs alaong with norman

  • @sanucues - sanucues, you are right. It is grilled into my memory many Motown albums and 45's listed with "Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong" credited as songwriters. The original comment that I wanted to post actually went more into detail about giving credit to many of the great, yet unheralded people at Motown that were behind all of these fantastic songs but, of course, I ran out of space and I had to edit it down to the comment that I posted above. Thanks for remembering Barrett.

  • @6ft6cutie Go fuck yourself jerkoff

  • when i listen to this song, i imagine walking down a long, dark road filled with evil eyes looking at me from the shadows. like wolves, they only hang around until you grow weak, tired and defenseless to make a move on you.

they follow you to your doom.

  • @mcreminisce <------ from one channel to the next----<<<

  • The feeling comes right back listening to this track. I'm transported to a time where I feel anything is possible. Where in the backgroung there's war and in my living room, the harmoneous sounds and the geneous of the Temptations. Music has never been this good, Man what a good feeling!

  • I love this version. Played "sky's the limit"

back in the day....driving along in the van, playing loud. Ahead of it's time and best track on the album. LOVE IT. I love the mellow "cheerfulness" of it...That's irony...I love the slow pace ...cooool ! Adore the funkiness. Now , if only I had listened to the message all those years ago. LOL.

  • Love the symphonic orchestration at the beginning and the build up . Very powerful . Have loved it since, finding it , 6 years ago. Norman Whitfield and the Funk brother's were genious's. Can't live without it. LOVE, LOVE LOVE it.!!!

  • This song is the best! Best vesion

  • the superior version. nothing like it. the intro is the theme song to my life.

  • this song ROCKS! the length is great and believe it or not, most of the songs that were outrageous hits were "weird" and unusual.

If you are interested in music business / audio (& all related fields) at ALL you should DEF check out a flick called "Before the Music Dies" at Hulu. It's really worth it, and will open some eyes about music biz then & now. Enjoy

  • Thanks for the whole version of this. This is a testament to the great arrangers Motown had. I study orchestration with songs like this. If I work as hard as MJ, I know I will get there!!!!!!

  • Excellent! The impossible task is to figure out which one is a mask.

    <
