does anyone know if theres a uk cd with all the normak whitfield full length tracks on it-most Temptations cds have heavilyedited versions of all these c.lassics which is a great shame
This was one of the many songs that I grew up with and loved. I don't remember this version of Smiling Faces although it is quite good. The one I remember is the one that seems to be attributed to "The Undisputed Truth". But damn if the male singer does not sound like Jerry Butler!! Can anyone (DiscoNights) let me know if I am suffering from dementia or what!
Norman Whitfield took a cue from the Beatles and the Doors that long versions with instrumental interludes create a theme that can run throughout an album-transforming it from a collection of singles to a thematically connected vision that stands as a single connected theme and message. Brilliant !
Never heard this version b4. Not bad. Check out David Ruffins version. I think the vocals of David's version is better than The Undisputed Truth's. But I like the instrument arrangments better on The Truth's version. Just my opinion. What do u think?
Not hating, because I loved the Psychedelic era Tempts songs ALMOST as much as the Golden era Tempts, but it seemed like by this time, Norman Whitfield was becoming something of a mad scientist and his ego was making the Temptations albums his laboratory. That's why you have these 4 minute instrumental breaks. No Tempts, just Norman's production.
hey, thanks for the reply, very kool, david coffey right on!!, i also really like the guitar intro on Who"s That Lady, i dont know the band , i think O"Jays?
@mjjcng8958 You mean Dennis Coffey. You could be right, but I think around this time, Cornelius Grant was playing guitar on many of the Tempts records, so that is also a possibility.
Great history lesson. Didn't know that N.W. would have more than one group cut the same songs. Also, I wonder if there would have been two versions of this from the Temptations. They could have done it the way Undisputed Truth and this way. Wow!!

@lrwsoreal "Smiling Faces Sometimes" was covered by The Undisputed Truth. The song was designated to be the follow-up release to The Temptations' "Just My Imagination." However, Eddie Kendricks had just left the group and had a prominent lead vocal in "Smiling Faces" so producer Norman Whitfield decided to release The Undisputed Truth's version instead which went top 5.
@83bubble "Sky's the Limit" may no longer be in print on CD (it might be cheaper to find it on vinyl record). "Smiling Faces Sometimes" is also on the Temptations CD compilation "Psychedelic Soul".
omygosh! ..i must say this is my first time hearing this song, but i love it soo much. just another great song to add to favorites from the temptations:)
I don't choose UT version over the Tempts because Norman Whitfield produced both versions if I'm not mistaking. That's the mark of a genius-same producer two different styles and sounds. I love this version because of the orchestra.
@jrynds You r so correct as a matter of fact the UT did it first, and that some of the musicans who played on both tracks were members who were to become "Rose Royce"
Well that's great! And as far as "...Grapevine" goes, I think Smokey did it the best of all, and there's no doubt that Marvin Gaye patterned his version after Smokey's,rather than Gladys'. And speaking of Gladys Knight, did you know that her smash hit "Midnight Train To Georgia" was originally a country song? That's right, it was called "Midnight Plane To Houston" , and was originally recorded by it's writer, Jim Weatherly.
The Mighty Temptations are amazing there is no one else like them. I grew up on this song at it is so true. Beware of the pat on the back. so real, so real.

excellent picture show, great, goes with the song perfect, wish i could copy it. awesome version of a great song...this version almost has a psychedelic feel...
This is such a classic arrangement .Know that they don't lay tracks like this anymore.. This is ALL about the music! and this is Grown Folks music! I have a very scratched up vinyl album of with this song and I still can't bring myself to throw it out. My favorite part is from 7.37+ with all that lush arrangement...strings 'N thangs, thumping bass and funky Blaxploitation guitar riff !! Thanks for posting!
I've read more than one place, that had Eddie not left the group when he did, this would have been the next single out of "Sky's The Limit" after Just My Imagination. That both is and isn't a shame when you ponder how Motown might have slashed it up length-wise to make it radio friendly. Just My Imagination was strong enough alone to make you buy the album, and once you discovered this too, you never forgot it.
I remember some classmates started their own band (Woodward Elementary School,Detroit),we had great teachers, Mr. Smith-instrumental, Miss Dickey-glee club. They were good enough to catch the ear of Berry Gordy. I was in high school, when they told me that Kendricks was leaving to start a solo career. When I told my friends, ( by then were were at different schools)they did not believe me until a few months later when it came true. No the band-classmates-did not make it; each went his own way.
Motown has always had different groups/soloists cover the same songs. Example, I Heard it Through the Grapevine, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Marvin Gaye. "Get Ready Cause Here I Come" Temptations, Rare Earth. I was in elementary school when the Temps did "Get Ready...I was in High School when Rare Earth did it. Smokey!!!! Holland-Dozier-Holland!!!
What a lot of people don't know about "I Heard It Through The Grapevine", is that it was first done by Smokey Robinson and The Miracles, and then the Isley Brothers. It's just that Gladys Knight And The Pips were the first to have a hit with it.
norman was very clever-he would always record the same song and give it to Gladys, Temps.,Marvin, and U.T.-and get producer's credit on each album. George Clinton did it also. Clever.
@bjc19199 People always get it twisted that The Undisputed Truth were teh first to do this song. "Sky's The Limit" came out long before the Undisputed Truth's version. This is the killer here!
My family owned a copy of the Psychedelic Shack album, which is shown at the beginning of this video. I assume that this song was on that album, but I don't recall it at all. Until now I'd always believed that the Undisputed Truth recorded the original version of Smiling Faces. I still prefer the U.T.'s version, but this one isn't bad.
you can check out wikipedia on the creator .songwriter producer Whitfield" who had many great hits with the temps .and later he re did this with "undisputed truth" .it shook me as a ten year old white kid in NJ.check out my new version on my page if you'd like.
They didnt redo this song. They sung this song originally. It wasnt released as a single because Eddie Kendricks quit the group to go solo. But yeah this song is awesome
@mannishboy69 The Temps sang the original. Undisputed Truth did the re-make and thier version was the hit version. Temps didn't release it because Eddie left around this time.
wow! this is really, really cool. my dad told about this music. he had only heard it once. i think in the 70's. a local "disc jockey "played the entire song on the radio. it was the first and last time he heard the long version until today. thank you so much for posting this vid
This version epitomizes why I'm glad that Berry Gordy gave Norman Whitfield the keys to the house and car in terms of production and creative control. Everyone gets major credit on this track - the arrangement is incredible; The Temps doing their thing, The Funk Brothers right there in the pocket, the dramatic buildup of the orchestra and the urgent acceleration of tempo as the track moves along. Excellent, excellent song.
@sanucues - sanucues, you are right. It is grilled into my memory many Motown albums and 45's listed with "Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong" credited as songwriters. The original comment that I wanted to post actually went more into detail about giving credit to many of the great, yet unheralded people at Motown that were behind all of these fantastic songs but, of course, I ran out of space and I had to edit it down to the comment that I posted above. Thanks for remembering Barrett.
when i listen to this song, i imagine walking down a long, dark road filled with evil eyes looking at me from the shadows. like wolves, they only hang around until you grow weak, tired and defenseless to make a move on you.
The feeling comes right back listening to this track. I'm transported to a time where I feel anything is possible. Where in the backgroung there's war and in my living room, the harmoneous sounds and the geneous of the Temptations. Music has never been this good, Man what a good feeling!
back in the day....driving along in the van, playing loud. Ahead of it's time and best track on the album. LOVE IT. I love the mellow "cheerfulness" of it...That's irony...I love the slow pace ...cooool ! Adore the funkiness. Now , if only I had listened to the message all those years ago. LOL.
Love the symphonic orchestration at the beginning and the build up . Very powerful . Have loved it since, finding it , 6 years ago. Norman Whitfield and the Funk brother's were genious's. Can't live without it. LOVE, LOVE LOVE it.!!!
this song ROCKS! the length is great and believe it or not, most of the songs that were outrageous hits were "weird" and unusual.
If you are interested in music business / audio (& all related fields) at ALL you should DEF check out a flick called "Before the Music Dies" at Hulu. It's really worth it, and will open some eyes about music biz then & now. Enjoy
Thanks for the whole version of this. This is a testament to the great arrangers Motown had. I study orchestration with songs like this. If I work as hard as MJ, I know I will get there!!!!!!

Was it not originally from Undisputed Truth and was then covered by The Temptations and Rare Earth? I thought so...
AnaDiLupis 1 year ago
Motown has always had different groups/soloists cover the same songs. Example, I Heard it Through the Grapevine, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Marvin Gaye. "Get Ready Cause Here I Come" Temptations, Rare Earth. I was in elementary school when the Temps did "Get Ready...I was in High School when Rare Earth did it. Smokey!!!! Holland-Dozier-Holland!!!

@elaineDPW
What a lot of people don't know about "I Heard It Through The Grapevine", is that it was first done by Smokey Robinson and The Miracles, and then the Isley Brothers. It's just that Gladys Knight And The Pips were the first to have a hit with it.

they lost a junkie who didn`t show up for rehersals and concerts...........cocaine will break up the best of unions

norman was very clever-he would always record the same song and give it to Gladys, Temps.,Marvin, and U.T.-and get producer's credit on each album. George Clinton did it also. Clever.

@bjc19199 People always get it twisted that The Undisputed Truth were teh first to do this song. "Sky's The Limit" came out long before the Undisputed Truth's version. This is the killer here!

This is a really good version, but my favourite is the one from Rare Earth on "Ma" album.

They didnt redo this song. They sung this song originally. It wasnt released as a single because Eddie Kendricks quit the group to go solo. But yeah this song is awesome
tuzwol 2 years ago 2
@mannishboy69 The Temps sang the original. Undisputed Truth did the re-make and thier version was the hit version. Temps didn't release it because Eddie left around this time.

wow! this is really, really cool. my dad told about this music. he had only heard it once. i think in the 70's. a local "disc jockey "played the entire song on the radio. it was the first and last time he heard the long version until today. thank you so much for posting this vid

@ 1:55 notice how all the temptation members that died early are sitting in the middle and the ones still living are on the edges....weird...

@6ft6cutie yup true don't forget my man Barrett Strong he co-wrote many of these songs alaong with norman
sanucues 1 year ago
@sanucues - sanucues, you are right. It is grilled into my memory many Motown albums and 45's listed with "Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong" credited as songwriters. The original comment that I wanted to post actually went more into detail about giving credit to many of the great, yet unheralded people at Motown that were behind all of these fantastic songs but, of course, I ran out of space and I had to edit it down to the comment that I posted above. Thanks for remembering Barrett.

when i listen to this song, i imagine walking down a long, dark road filled with evil eyes looking at me from the shadows. like wolves, they only hang around until you grow weak, tired and defenseless to make a move on you.
they follow you to your doom.

The feeling comes right back listening to this track. I'm transported to a time where I feel anything is possible. Where in the backgroung there's war and in my living room, the harmoneous sounds and the geneous of the Temptations. Music has never been this good, Man what a good feeling!

I love this version. Played "sky's the limit"
back in the day....driving along in the van, playing loud. Ahead of it's time and best track on the album. LOVE IT. I love the mellow "cheerfulness" of it...That's irony...I love the slow pace ...cooool ! Adore the funkiness. Now , if only I had listened to the message all those years ago. LOL.

this song ROCKS! the length is great and believe it or not, most of the songs that were outrageous hits were "weird" and unusual.
