Way better than the kindle BUT if you buy one just take the stylus out and throw it away. It's useless because it just falls apart, check out the forums. Sony know of the issue but are ignoring it. However, don't let it ut you off buying this great ereader.
@SylvianLight If you still want the reader. Its $69.99+ tax at the sony store refurbished. Free shipping. These are getting harder to find. Great price for a refurbished.
now i found this for 111 (Same as amazon wifi) now im drawn from the two haha, well because i like compact, touch screen and knowing i wont buy e-books from being too bored on a day, maybe just maybe ill get this.
@doodo412 Just got one, and it's FAR better for reading my academic papers in PDF form. Quadrant view and half view (in landscape) blow the kindle away, not to mention annotation and the touchscreen. The inconvenience of no wireless is no biggie at all, but the lack of SD card isn't great. Good thing 1.5GB takes a *long* time to fill up.
How does the quadrant view for PDFs compare with other readers? I read a lot of academic papers and most are in 2-column formats. I know that equations and tables that span 2 columns would not show entirely in a quadrant, but the text would. I like the idea that I don't have to play with the pdf file in order to get the reflow to work nicely.
@mongomondomongo so sony went more into style and being small compared to money worth, i hate when sony does that. I am getting the kindle with 3g. thanks for the reply.
@UPALLNITE4U Tbh, i don't care, it works and it does not leave any finger prints. I had no problems with it and as long I can buy e books and read them its fine, i dont like small, its not my ideal of comfort. I LOVE it and its great im not sucked into any main company product like apple or microsoft ect.
good review :) but i have one question i have my own e-reader at home (just got it) so how do you download the library onto the computer because it says you have to hook up the reader yo the computer then clik settings and install library but it doesnt work that way for me and i have no idea on how to do it, do you know?
@Ajaxster2 Just got one ourselves, no help at all from manual etc. figured out though, to get the files from the library, you connect the reader, then simply drag and drop the file from the library over to the reader( on the left, where my computer etc. is). It won't seem like anything happened, but it will work. Then disconnect reader, and check it. it should be there.
I have tried both the Kindle and the Sony Reader Pocket Edition, and for me, the Sony is the better device for two primary reasons. First is the UI. I simply got tired of using the D pad on the Kindle to try to navigate my way around. It is so much simpler to have the touch interface. Second, even though the new Kindle 3 is fairly small, it still felt too bulky in my hand, and not truly portable. The Sony Pocket Edition, on the other hand, is both portable and yet still very readable.
Great unit, whilst it works. Sony have had mine over 1 month, replaced the main board twice and still they can't figure out why it doesnt work. I can say however it's a great unit, easy to read and books are easier to come by compared to Kindle. Definitely recommend one, just hope you don't have bad luck like me. I'm hoping to get a replacement from Waterstones (UK) in the next couple of days.
@SashoMusic the touchscreen technology for the PRS-350 uses laser technology now hidden around the sides of the screen and users have reported that there is no glare, unlike previous versions.
If Sony removes the touch screen ( which is more IPad effect, here we read!! ) there will be a twice of battery life and there will be no glare! How need a touch screen to read !!! The touch screen has a plastic on the top of the Sony which makes GLARE! If the Sony remove the touch screen will be the best thing on the market with those dictionarys, or its much easy to amazon put couple of dictionarys
Thanks for the advice. It appears that if I decide to buy one of these ereaders, I need to buy a larger screen one since I mostly read pdf documents. However, the fact that it is not colored, it sort of kills the deal. Anyways, I will stick to my iphone and wait for future releases. Good review again.
Hi Lisa, sorry for being off topic but, when you do the 'daily' edition up-and-coming, would you please consider juxtaposing it to the current prs900? I'd like to see the affect of the non-glare coating and revised e-ink quality compared. Thank you.
The 2-column split and 3-column split should be quite good for reading PDF's, particularly those that have 2-3 columns, which is the case for most academic journals.
Cool, i like that its a no-nonsense ereader without gimmicks. eg. whats the point of a long lasting e-ink display, if youre going to pair the device with power hogs like an lcd display or 3g radio.

Compared to amazon gen 3 (110GBP) what one would you find easier for on the go for someone who does not want to spend too much?

@crimsure The Kindle 3 has twice the battery life, is cheaper, and has twice the memory for a lower price.
