I need to know how to clean my dad's m-1 carbine(universal) and mine doesnt have a button on the bolt but a lever, and has a metal top hand guard thingy. can anyone tell me/ link me to a how to clean it website/video/instructions?
wrong I own a M1 Carbine dated april 1944 that has a rounded bolt very similar to that of the M1 Garand. Plus mine dosent have flip sights. The early carbines did. Bayonet lugs were installed at armories after ww2.
Great Video. I owen an M1 Carbine Myself. It is a GREAT handy little rifle. Designed to be a Self Defense rifle. NOT an offense rifle. I have read in the internet that Some Police Agencies years ago in the south or mid-west, used Soft Point or Hollow Point ammunition to shoot several supects with great effect in stopping them. Althought not my first choice in a SHTF defense weapon (I have an AR-15 & Mossberg Shotgun for that) I would NOT feel under armed carrying my M1.
Great review! Such a fun weapon with a great and proud history behind it. I bought my Inland in the late 80's for a little over a hundred bucks. After looking at todays prices, I wish I would have bought 4.

Does anyone else think that it sucks that the US WWII cost so much compared to foreign ones? I'd love to have an M1 Garand and M1 Carbine, but the prices steer me away.
@saari09 thats what i wanna know i got somw weenie telling me .30 carbine is comparable to a .357 magnum hes crazy and hes crazy if its better than ruger mini-14 or ar. 15
The .30 carbine can be handloaded with identical ballistics to the .223. The .30 carbine handles much better than a mini 14. The ruger doesn't shoot milatary ammo either. When the government picked the stoner rifle instead of the ruger. Ruger wasn't allowed to headspace for the ball ammo.
WTF "identical" ballistics to the .223??? The m1 Carbine fires a 110 grain bullet at 1900 fps, the .223 is a 55 grain bullet at 3300, there's nothing remotely close to their ballistics, handloader or not.
The Mini-14 is chambered for 5.56 and most certainly does handle GI ammo, I bought mine in 1977 and shoot 5.56 all the time. the 30M1 does NOT have better downrange energy the bullet has a crap ballistic coefficient.

I never said the Mini 14 and the m-15 competed. I only said that Ruger offered the sale of the mini 14 to the government and they turned them down. I should of said "stayed with the stoner rifle".
What a something to know about. I know how to shoot them and reload. I know that low intensity operaters prefer sub-gun calibers that can be supressed and won't over penetrate in close combat. The M1 carbine is perfect for this.
You didn't catch the specifics. I said sub-gun calibers. .30 carbine is not a regular pistol round. It is right in the neighborhood however. I doubt a .30 carbine would make much way through re-concrete. You don't know much about reloading, Every caliber can be loaded subsonic including up to the .50 BMG and the .30carbine. Look up the recipes some time.
The .30 carbine has a straight wall and big choice of bullets. You can work the crimp in many heights and headspace correctly. Using a heavier bullet will actually have higher case pressure than a lighter one. It will cycle just fine. You might even have to reduce the powder to stay safe.
Effectiveness of 5.56 wins hands down over the 30 carbine.
No comparison.
The 30 carbine's 110 grain bullet is a pistol bullet, loses velocity very fast because of a horrible ballistic coefficient. At 200 yards it's barely breaking 1000 fps.
The .30 carbine is more vertsitile for headspacing than the .223 beacuse of the straight wall case. The carbine also has more bullet choices. You are reading from factory ballistics. You can handload a .30 carbine to totally match a .223. There's more case volume and you can crimp the bullet really high with the .30 carbine. It will burn with a short hollow point.
@Jrhoney The Korean winter is a bitch. The Koreans were wearing such heavy clothing in layers, the .30 carbine's bullet would just bounce off or lodge into the clothing. Sure, it would hurt like hell, but the soldier wasn't really wounded.
Sootch00 I enjoyed your vid on the .30 M1 Carbine. Their a fun little gun easy to shoot with a low recoil I agree with most of what you have to say about it. Now comes the but, I think for the money and for ammo availability I would get a Ruger Mini 14 or a Kel-tech Su-16 I really don't think the .223 Rem has more felt recoil, but it is more effective and it will range out to 500meters . I also think in a survivor role 5.56X45 MM ammo will be more available.
@BarrelRoll7 a carbine is actually a smaller version of a main larger rifle. but this one from what i read was named after a guy named Carbine not an actual carbine because it wouldve been smaller
Well, it's actually the other way around. David Marshal Williams earned the nickname "Carbine Williams" due to his involvement in the project while serving a 20 year prison sentence for 2nd degree murder.
His contributions earned him a much reduced sentence that even the widow of the deputy he was accused of killing campaigned for.
The movie Carbine Williams staring James Stewart is worth watching but seems hard to find on DVD these days.
@BarrelRoll7 The word carbine comes from the French word Carabine, a light horseman and the shortened weapons they carried. From all accounts, the proper pronunciation of Carbine is KAR-bean as it comes from this word and isn't necessarily phonetic.
It's pronounced by so many as KAR-byne that it's also accepted, albeit incorrect.
Sootch00 is pronouncing "carbine" correctly in this video.
@BarrelRoll7 Lets not get into the whole Carbine vs Carbean thing. Arm chair Warriors everywhere do enough of the Suppressor vs silencer, AUG vs AWG and so on.
@BarrelRoll7 Carbine is pronounced Carbeen, the same way it's pronounced in chlorine, submarine, sardine. Dumb asses and kids who play too much COD say car-bine.
@BarrelRoll7 Italic pronunciation, like "marine". English inherited many different ways of spelling and pronouncing from the languages it's composed of.
I've read that M1 lost some effectiveness against the Chinese in Korea not only for jamming but also for not having enough power to get through the Chinese's cold weather clothing.
@DocThrobulator i dont believe it, there is a video on here demonstrating the penetrating power of the 30 carbine. it went trough several layers of frozen denim and a tree trunk.
@DocThrobulator State your facts correctly, it jammed because it was severely cold. It couldnt penetrate the thick clothing because of the low velocity it had at 110 gr.. It only achieved 1,990 fps., 967 ft·lbf.. That is equal to me hitting you with a big ball bat through thick heavy clothing. Hence the term Carbine. Now lets pull out the M1 Garand and lets see you walk away from that.
@duane2072 And the Garand would jam in sand and mud conditions according to army testing. I have the link if you want it. That's completely ridiculous. A .30 carbine hitting you with frozing clothing is like getting hit by a baseball bat? Getting hitting by a baseball bat is nothing like getting hit by a .30 carbine. NOTHING! Testing has disproved the myth that the .30 carbine can't penetrate clothing. I have a link if you want.
@esh325 Now your stating something I didnt even say. WTF. So you have been hit by a .30 carbine in thick clothing and what studies have you done to prove this of what you state? Were talking a light bullet at low velocity here. We are not talking durability of the M1 in muddy conditions and sand. Your talkng cold climate. Again, get facts straight. Dont put something up trying to quote me on something I didnt state. Carbine is what it is, a smaller version of its parent gun.
I acknowledge the M1 carbine's place in history. I don't personally have the same love affair with it that lots of people seem too. I dig them, but not enough to pay what they run for nowadays. I also don't think it would be anywhere near my top choice for a self-defense rifle. Get an AR15 for the same price, or an AK for about half that & you are far better equipped. Now a M1 Garand or 1903A3 are a different story to me. I plan on a Tanker Garand in .308 & a 1903A3 30-06 for the collection =)>
the M-1 carbine I bought came w/ 2 - 30 rd mags.. and dont know for sure but guy that sold it to me said that was made by/subcontracted to some type-a tool division of Harley Davidson... it also came w/ the M-8 grenade launcher
@Hhound only problem w/ mine was occasional failure of "bolt to completely move forward into battery" hope I'm saying that right.. sometimes would stop w/ like a hair/millimeter left. a buddy told me it was a lube/cleaning issue.. and might be right as I didnt fire/clean it much. closest range was indoor handgun/shotgun and limited to .22 rifles only. so my rifle exp. is limited
'Love your channel. Love your commitment to Christ. Keep it up bro!
I bought my first 30 Carbine when I was 14. Picked it up for $140 (Oh yeah!) from a Korean war vet. It was my first gun and still my favorite. Now, I'm teaching my sons to shoot with it. I'm just crazy about 'em. I'm thinkin' of pickin up a new A/O 30 carbine. 'Any experience with these?
I really like this gun, but would you ever consider putting wood polish on the stock? of course it is nice as is, but there are some beautiful darker wood m1-m2 carbines out there.
Sootch good video some of your facts are a bit new to me I thought I knew all there was about the M1. But damn good explanation for someone who doesn't know that much about guns. Your a great face to have for the shooting sports in general.
Interesting take on the carbine. One thing to remember- the 1940's wartime ammunition was less powerful when compared to today's commercial .30 Carbine loads, or even 1970's LC gov't production surplus. This actually became such a sticking point that the 82nd A/B Division got rid of many M1A1s and switched troopers that had carried them over to the M1 after their return to England from Normandy in 7/'44. Good video, and again, an interesting perspective.
@ramoncalicdan1 no disrespect, but i used to have an officemate who was from mindanao, it's not the m1 carbine they fea, neither the m16 but the m14 and its 30 cliber ammo. smashes trough concrete walls and cut through trees. wile inferior calibers are defelected by the branches. i think the m1 carbine makes good HD weapon though, esp. for me who lives in an urban area and is just a new shooter.
In 1971 Carbine Williams gave his workshop and its contents to the North Carolina Museum of History. You can view Williams’s shop, see examples of his work, and learn more about the legendary Carolina "good ole boy" . very cool story
i have a strange aftermarkert "alpine" m1 carbine. it had a laminated stock, smooth butplate, and the top handguard is metal. it was called the "low profile" handguard to eliminate the groove they had to put in the wood handguards.
Very interesting video. I don't have one, but will be shortly, I've wanted one for awhile. I have a question about the carbine, and I've had it for awhile, just haven't asked. I've heard the discussion before about who developed it -- carbine Williams or Winchester. My question is, didn't the Garand come out first, and isn't the action on a M1 Carbine basically just a scaled down Garand? If so, then how can anyone say they designed it, other than Garand? What's your info on it?
Great review sootch. I own an after market M-1 made by Universal and it definetly has issues of unreliability as you said. But only in feeding rounds every few shots or so. It came with a 30 round M-2 stamped mag, replaced the mag spring but still have issues. Still i love to shoot it, light weight enough to take on hikes out in the back country.
My grandfather was an engineer attached to an airborne unit during ww2. He carried the m1 carbine through France, Operation Market Garden, and during the Battle of the Bulge. He passed away last year, but he always had the m-1 in his gun cabinet. Thanks for the video on a real piece of American history.
I have enjoyed all of your videos now for quite sometime now. This video is one of the best that you have released in recent times, very well thought out, very informative, and gave a nice history of the weapon.
Good informative video as always and as always thanks for posting them up.
I'm going to correct you on something that you said if you don't mind?
It is estimated that 30% of Japanese casualties inflicted by rifle and carbine fire during the Okinawan campaign were caused by the M3 carbine and its M1 sniper scope. That's 30% of the total Japanese soldiers killed by rifle and carbine fire...not 70% of all Japanese casualties.
sootch00, Your theme is reminding me of the This Old House theme, not that they sound alike, just that when I hear it, I know what's coming on. I really enjoy that you show so many different firearms. It's great to learn from someone who has a knowledge and access to so many wonderful pieces. It never gets old!
I hate how people say its underpowered but If you've ever seen test it has more stopping power that most combat rifles. I'd really like one light weight, accurate, mobile, perfect for a small shooter like me I'd really like one for hunting or WROL they're really nice plus you can get those 30rd mags for it. My grandpa has one that I hope I'll get one day

@duane2072 The soldiers most likely missed. Anecdotal evidence is not always accurate.
esh325 5 months ago
@esh325 Now your stating something I didnt even say. WTF. So you have been hit by a .30 carbine in thick clothing and what studies have you done to prove this of what you state? Were talking a light bullet at low velocity here. We are not talking durability of the M1 in muddy conditions and sand. Your talkng cold climate. Again, get facts straight. Dont put something up trying to quote me on something I didnt state. Carbine is what it is, a smaller version of its parent gun.
duane2072 5 months ago
@duane2072 Look up a test on a website called the boxoftruth.

Your stock on this carbine looks excellent... was it luck of the draw or did you refinish/buy a new stock?
GlocksInABox 7 months ago

Hhound 8 months ago
@Hhound only problem w/ mine was occasional failure of "bolt to completely move forward into battery" hope I'm saying that right.. sometimes would stop w/ like a hair/millimeter left. a buddy told me it was a lube/cleaning issue.. and might be right as I didnt fire/clean it much. closest range was indoor handgun/shotgun and limited to .22 rifles only. so my rifle exp. is limited

I have a Rock-Ola M1 Carbine, but it had rear sights and a bayonet lug added to it during the Korean War.

Best video about this great gun.
Love the history.
I had one about 6 years ago but I foolishly sold it. Now that I am wanting to get into 3 gun competition I wish I wish I wish I had not done that.

Newer rear sight and a bayonet lug...
They really messed up the value on that WW2 gun.

Good video, and again, an interesting perspective.

yes, you're right muslim extremist in mindanao, phils. are afraid to engage when they know your carrying an M-1...
ramoncalicdan1 1 year ago
@ramoncalicdan1 no disrespect, but i used to have an officemate who was from mindanao, it's not the m1 carbine they fea, neither the m16 but the m14 and its 30 cliber ammo. smashes trough concrete walls and cut through trees. wile inferior calibers are defelected by the branches. i think the m1 carbine makes good HD weapon though, esp. for me who lives in an urban area and is just a new shooter.
gagongromy 1 year ago
@ramoncalicdan1 oops my bad. yes, they fear the m1.. i think it shares the same ammo with m14

762x51n8o 1 year ago
@762x51n8o The M1 Carbine is not a scaled down M1 Garand. Different gas system.

Hope that helps you out.
Keep up the good work!
