I finally finished the serial that I got from Amazon.
Kamuela Searle was seen moving, and trying to escape from the stake as the script called for. Although they could've shot out of sequence I'm not sure how common that was in 1920.
On the Burrough's website, they quote his brother saying he died of cancer four years later, but still way too young.
In his book, "Tarzan Forever", John Taliaferro points out that Kamuela Searle's brother said that Kamuela died of cancer in 1924, four years after he was supposedly killed by an elephant while filming "The Son of Tarzan" (1920). The following year he appeared in "Fools Paradise" (1921) for Cecil B DeMille, but the footage of this may have been filmed earlier.
Fantastic! I've waited almost forty years to see this footage! Many thanks. Kamuela Searle was terrific. (Did you know his younger brother went to high school with Buster Crabbe in Hawaii?)
The actor playing Korak (Kammuela Searle, spelling probably incorrect) was killed filming this last scene. The elephant apparently slammed him to the ground instead of gently lowering him.
I've been waiting over thrity years. Thanks so much!

This information is questionable. Please see the link to my web page about this film in the More Info section where I discuss this.

I've heard that too. It was according to Gabe Essoe's Tarzan of the Movies.
I'm almost sure it's true simply because I think Kamuela would've ended up playing Tarzan.
I would wish the publishers would use his photographs for Tarzan books.
Interestingly, Korak was never shown again in the movies (that I know of).
