I just watched the video of this when we performed it at nationals; so many changes from there to state! ( and yes, nationals was before state because it was UDA and not affiliated with WIAA)
That was really good! I loved the first and floor pom switches. As a former member of the SW Drill team, I know how hard those can be (one of the years I was on, two girls had to hold 3 poms, two in one hand and we won too).
Where are you guys? Who choreographs your routines? I coach a dance team and I'm always looking for innovative choreographers to choreograph our competition routines. And how do you get so many girls on your team?? I can't seem to get more than 10 or 11 to tryout!!
That would be me. I worked with Shorewood from 2002 - 2007 primarily. 2008 I did this routine solely for nationals. Fast. Hard. Intricate. That was the plan.
Shorewood didn't start with this many girls. Through great coaching and kids on the team, we built an institution in the school that created tryouts hundreds of girls. It's doable, but takes so much time to build that respect.
Well I get what you are saying, but I also was on a drill team for many years and in college witch of course almost every drill team has the "military style". But it depends on what style of dance you are doing. If any of my teams went out to a comp. w/ a dance like that we would prob. get points off for no dance technique and not being on a advanced dance level.
we certainly have dance technique-focused pom teams up here, but our judges award first to teams that deliver the best performance. if the technique pom-ers were as sharp, together, and as clever in choreography as this team usually is (like moses lake was in '07), they would definitely win! on that note, youtube doesn't do SW (or any of our drill teams) justice. you gotta see these teams live to get that rush from all the energy, synchronization and deafening fast music; it's half the fun.
it has nothing to do with dance or drill choreography...it is all about the POMS. If you do a dance routine or drill routine and do not use pom visuals the judges are going to say that you did a dance or drill routine with poms in your hands, not a pom routine. The whole point of a pom routine is to show off your poms and make it visually amazing. It has nothing to do with drill or dance. Execution is however a very important matter- once you have execution down you need to add difficulty.
its not the dance category so i still dont understand why dance elements are important...they are displaying difficulty in other ways like the speed of the their arm movements and transitions, full body participation, and full utilization of pom visuals
In my opinion, pom teams that are dance-oriented don't create as much of a visual aesthetic-ness as Shorewood because they are just exactly like a dance routine but they hold poms. What's the point of even being pom if you are only going to dance with poms? Shorewood uses the poms to their advantage.
I love the hypnotic drill/pom stylings of Shorewood, but I also love the look of teams that fuse drill and dance together in their pom, like LW, Lewis and Clark and Eastlake. I also like dance pom if it's well done, but that's really rare in WA. In any event, state this year is gonna be crazy!!
Ok, ummmm no it's not! In ballet you do like grandee jetés, fouetté and pirouettes you know the stuff you would put into a ballet dance. And hip-hop would be more of the free-style alonge with other dance moves.DUH! A pom dance has fast arms dance technique and lots of high energy. Here is a way to put it...it's would be like doing a kick dance but you never kick you just run really fast to you next formation. Yeah see it doesn't work :D
Shorewood's style is based on the "military" style of dance that dance/drill teams have been practicing for at least the past half-century. That dance style is based on drills that all militaries use to instill discipline and conformity in their troops. Drills typically consist of sharp bodily movements, sometimes done armed, sometimes unarmed, and marching. Think of Shorewood as an armed drill team, except instead of sabers or rifles, they have poms. Their aesthetic is unique & enjoyed by many.
I would just like to know if you are from Washington or not...because drill in other states are VERY different than here. "A pom routine is designed to emphasize the utilization & movement of poms. Pom styles may be dance or drill oriented. The routine SHOULD NOT be such if performed w/o poms it would be considered a dance or drill routine. Emphasis on creativity, difficulty, sychronization, AND maximum visual effect created with use of poms." -WIAA State Competition Pamphlet.
I am so glad our HS athletic association continues to provide safe harbor to the kind of genuine creativity that goes on here. Jetés, fouettés and pirouettes are great, but c'mon...you can get that in 99.9% of the country. I wanna see beautiful, dynamic shapes and effects created with those poms! Don't take my drill-ish pom away!
Very nice! but to bad in every year ya'll do the same thing like...the floor part with all the arms. And question why do ya'll never dance at all??? All ya'll do is make lots of really good formations and move your arms fast.Really good team very clean but it was a dance/drill comp. you go to dance not do fast arms. And yes I do see that ya'll got 1st place but I just think there should be some dancing in there :)
So much that I went to a Yellowcard concert last Friday and they played this song and the only reason I knew the lyrics was because I've watched this video so many times.
haha, i've also memorized the lyrics to this song because of this video! i always find myself singing it as i walk around. and i'm no particular fan of yellowcard, either.
wow...this was incredible! Definitely deserved 1st place! I loved the level changes in the beginning the colors in the last formation. Just...wow. Great job, ladies!!
