While I understand the bus itself has issues, im a little concerned with how close the "brake problem" bus was following another bus. That's pretty close for a perfectly operating bus.
If the brakes are not working properly, REFUSE THE EQUIPMENT, write the defect and turn it in for repair. If the defect still exists even after a mechanic signs off, you can STILL refuse the bus and you SHOULD.
To me it sounds like the drumbrakes are oval witch means the brakes start to be bouncy and also reduced brakeperformance! In this case the best to do is change the brakes.
Don't automatically side with the drivers. Many of the drivers I work with love to complain about anything, and think because they heard something fourth-hand that it's gospel. Any bus drivers out there, make up some outlandish rumor and see how quickly it gets mangled and how quickly the various versions of the rumor spread.
This driver keeps complaining but I would be willing to bet he drives for a very large bus service. With a numbering system like the one they are using I'm sure they have a large fleet. Remember safety items always come first, not block heaters and such.
Yes large districts tend to have more issues, but they also have more replacement (sub) buses available. The district i drive for now has 350+ regular route buses but the county i drove for before this managed close to 1500 buses. Whenever there is a problem, you write it up and turn it in to the mechanical staff and they pull your bus from the lot and replace it with a spare. And our buses were generally returned to us within 3 days. So a short-handed or lazy mechanical staff plays a role.
If your having brake problems, check the treadle valve, what the mechanics probably do is check the lining, slack adjusters and call it quits. The treadle valves send the proper ammount of air based on input to each wheel, if there is a problem you might not be getting full ammount of air, there fore applying the brake fullying it may be sending half the ammount of air which would seem like there is a problem with the brakes, and this is a PROBLEM.
wow thats gotta be the poorest school to not check the brakes regularly, imagen 30 kids dieng because the brakes didnt work, then image the emotinaly drama of all the families, then image the school getting shut down, then imagen all the kids tryn to find a new school, then imagine a higher rate of kids failing. Lol nah im joken their just brakes that would never happen.
the bus driver we had lol back in HS on her 92BLUEBIRD she would forget to turn it off for a good 8 miles she would leave the left one on and by the time we got to the turn off on my road she would remember that its on lol.
My bus, a Thomas FS-65 conventional makes that loud clunk everytime we stop, wether its fast or slow speed. We also had a bus with the same model blew the radiator.
my district has 1 Amtran Genesis but its a 1993 with the DT466E engine. right now its used as a spare bus. its actually on the brink of retirement cause the heaters in the back don't work at all and the defrosters are barely working. it doesn't have a radio in it or A/C. but i will say this, it runs really well for its age.
To FLboi98: well you can't really help if you have a bad mechanical staff. My staff is horrible, and i will say that over and over again. I have told them this many times also. I have needed my transmission serviced since late august. And now i think my glow plugs are slowly going out. It took about 7 or 8 minutes for the glow plug indicator light to go off this morning. And did i mention it was only 71 degrees.
Hmmm Something dont sound right about this video. Driving a bus with bad brakes and complaining about the garage staff. Hmmm The driver should be written up as well as the copilot.

Brakes should be the number 1 thing on a school bus to get fixed. in fact they should be done first anything else can wait

If its not safe to drive, you do NOT DRIVE THE BUS, your about as clueless as the mechanics IMO.

schooled6 4 years ago
Most of ours do. Lack of maintence
AllAmericanFE 4 years ago
@AllAmericanFE Same thing happens in my district.
We have a lot of old buses, like a 1988 Blue Bird, and a 1995 Thomas. The others are Saf-T-Liner C2's.
Every day, at least one bus is broken down.

Why was she still driving that bus if the mechanics said the air pressure was too low?

Wow that bus driver sure knows how to use good judgement calls. That would be scary if the bus rear ended the one in front due to the brakes.
