Medieval 2 Total War Pikes

Mmeh... I've always had difficulty using pikes in this game in any way other than defensively, and even then they tend to wither pretty quickly as they drop their pikes for swords.

Man, this formation is like ... totally lame. It's not like it will never work; just that if I use this formation on a campaign map, each battle will be won at horrendous cost since it's a man-on-man attrition battle. A hammer-and-anvil is harder to use but the reward is small casualties.

And how would I break this formation? I will play as Spain, then bring Musketeers, or any long range crossbow plus some artillery. The crossbow in the inner circle can not reach me.

If the game reflects reality, an army of only pikeman in phalanx is not much use. Pike is the anvil on which the cavalry and light infantry push the enemy. That is how combined arms worked then and now.

That is cool but i would find it more interesting/challenging to play as a force similar to the HRE force and try to beat the square.

here at one point, you clicked on a unit and just ROTATED the formation...How did you do that?

Use the Period and Comma button when you have a unit selected to rotate.

Your crossbowmen will do fine as long as they have some distance between themselves and the pikes. You could use thicker formations to allow pikes and crossbows to stand interchanged.

Secondly, the way you deployed now, you lose the initiative. With a double line, you can easily move some pikes to counter flanking movements. You just have to react in time.

Try invisioning 2 pieces of artillery against your formation...

I think you could've made a lot more of this formation by allowing a more flexible flank to deploy and use a double line of phalanx to defend against breakthroughs. More flexible conquistadors and men-at-arms could do a better pincer, because they ajust more quickly to a new situation.

indeed, however i was sure the enemy cavalry was going to flank me, but it was very weird that they didn't. Also, if I tried double -ranking, it would have drastically enclosed my crossbowmen who were inexperienced and tend to have issues shooting over shoulders. If I had fewer crossbows then yes.

Um..i like the battle tactics.But why didn't you use cavalry,to support your ground troops.I like using allot of cavalry to run down troops that are exhausted or retreating.That way their demoralized.

None the less victory was still achieved.

surrounding in circle formation with pikes is a great strategy. what i like to do is make a cresent formation so when the enemy charges they head straight up the middle and get surrounded

Thanks :) I'm good all around, I guess :) The AI is easily beatable without cavalry, but online the only way I can win is by using my cavalry effectively, or if I'm outnumbered.

thanks :) I felt that is the perfect formation for large quantity of spears, if you ask me. I have a Duel 7600 GeForce 512 MB graphics card, 3.3 Ghz duel core processor.

duel? is that a company? or do you mean dual as in you SLI two 7600 Geforce 512MB cards together? And that formation, I've done it before. I love it. I played Multiplayer against an extremely powerful army, I used pikes mainly and ALMOST won... lol. It's a very powerful formation.

man i wish i could play this game :'( i got it for christmas but my laptop does not have a good enough processor (1.7 ghz.) i have another laptop with a 3 ghz processor but i can't put my 1g Ram stick in it. it has to be a special made ram card. good gameplay footage though!

Holy crap, thats a badass formation. How long did that take to set up?

about 3 - 5 minutes to set up, haha. The formation worked out very well. I actually thought my center was going to collapse, but I had it set up so I could fold the pikemen guarding the flanks inward, but that didn't happen so I folded them outward instead.
