I think this type of excellence is what has caused certain music from the 60's, 70's, 80's and much longer ago (classical music) to be remembered while other music that may have been popular at the time has been forgotten, at least by most. Although popular taste does introduce some bias into that sorting process because of the "emotional appeal" variable.

As I mentioned, a lot of current songs are popular for reasons other than musical excellence/originality and will consequently be forgotten. Take a look at the comments on the Vevo video for "Fight For This Love" - they're mostly about how hot the singer is. But on, say, a Rush video (or this video!) you'll find people actually talking about the music.

Matthew connects classical music with modern music. Thanks to his classical background, I love Muse for what they really are. Sometimes I think: Matthew would probably be an even far more skilled classical composer if he didn't pick up the guitar and stuff, but then I wouldn't be into that music, probably!
