I'm thinking of trying this distro, but as I haven't used Linux before, I have a question if someone could kindly answer.

Would this still need a plugin such as WINE to run some Windows programs, or has it got native support?

@Varellia ... you need WINE ... i recommend to create a virtual machine in which you will install windows and run all the windows programes perfectly ... for more info google it :D ... good luck !

This is the best linux distro I have ever used..its really a BIG improvement over the other distros out there.

BUTwhen I installed it on my desktop, it screwed up my raid conf and I had no choice but to format it!! Why doesnt ubuntu support raid? And it gets worse! The font is really really really tiny on a full HD monitor, even after trying to adjust the font and everything elseit looked a mess.

Así era antes, tampoco me gustaba, pero con Kwin mejora mucho el rendimiento, ahora Gnome es algo más lento. Claro que en velocidad siempre sale ganando XFCE, pero Kubuntu está más xvr !!

I originally thought that Kubuntu was some sort of "hardcore" version of Ubuntu, but is the difference more with the general interface? In other words, is Kubuntu a 'prettier' version of Ubuntu?

its a different window manager.

Ubuntu is GNOME, Kubuntu is KDE, Xubuntu is XFCE. Theres also things like tinywm, openbox, and others.

gnome is much more polished, while oxygen has very nice ideas, but its not as polished gnome/tango.

@P0pSkill3r Ubuntu->Kubuntu In Ubuntu open terminal and type : sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop switch kdm as default. You are in Ubuntu with kde!

Use Ubuntu 9.4 live CD to do a backup of your files on a USB or another storage system such a A partition if u have one.. Then Reinstall Ubuntu!... That's all

He was also using a screen capturing program and God knows what video settings he had. I'm on GeForce 4 MX440 (64 MB) and Compiz-Fusion runs absolutely fine. Except maybe for burning effects, which AFAIK require shaders. Those run a little slower. :) Linux is awesome.

It didn't seem laggy to me.  As to how popular Kubuntu is, or even Linux for that matter, that's like saying Lamborghini cars suck because the majority of people don't have one. Which would be downright stupid :-)

it could just be hit screen recording software. some of them (like camstudio) are a little laggy, and Jing tends to be VERY laggy if you are using the free version.

it's an option in the kwin menu ... desktop cube ... you select that option and there it tells you how you activate it ... i selected the upper right corner to activate it ... if you have problemes activating the cube contact me
