reticulated pythons and anacondas are the largest species alive today. retics are generally the longest while anacondas are the heaviest. they had been found in the 30 and 40 foot range historically, but as mankind has hunted them such larger specimens are a rarity. the same goes for many other large reptile specimens, such as crocodiles.

actually the largest snake (living) evver found was in one of the very first expeditions into the amazon, it was hunting the expedition parties boat, the lead scientist put 1 bullet into its skull then they dragged it out, they where only able to drag and estimated 50% of its body (they never managed to get a real account of its length) and the width of its head was 1meter. to this day there are scientists searching for that species hoping it still exists.

Actually the "49 footer" in Indonesia turned out to be incorrectly measured and was actually 23 feet. The longest is 33 feet.
