Never try and gybe with the vang on that hard, the boom will be too loaded up to flick across. You should let it right off, wait until the boat is travelling as fast as possible, pull the tiller over and flick the boom across. On the other side bear away straight away to put the boat under the rig and then continue sailing as you were.
i sat though this video going "why are you sailing like that?nooooo don't do that!". poor laser well there goes 1000 bucks you deserve loosing it for making a mistake like keeping you boom vang so tight, now you know the dangers of an auto jib i guess. but you look fairly experienced you have nice equipment you shouldn't have made such a mistake in the first place.
i reckon he is an experianced sailer. although... how many times have u gone sailing a just cant be bothered to undo the outhaul or downhaul just because you know that as soon as u start going upwind again u will just have to crank the thing back on. i know that im really lazy when i sail my laser!
Did not seem like a sufficient shock to break the spar. Perhaps already fatigued from excessive vang pressure? I have this as a bad dream sometimes, and I'm a mile or two offshore - so I sheet way in when jibing and nurse that baby around. Also watch you don't hang the main sheet on the transom corner!
nice vid... this should be a lesson to always set ur controls right even if not racing- if not it puts lots of strain on the sail and mast- as you can see!
my mast has also broken like that once with 33 knots of breeze!!!i was going from reach to a run and when the gust came my friend with another laser cupsized and i lost my mast !!i took the sail on board and it still had strength to move the boaT!the mast broke just over the boom vang base...luckily i didnt lose the vang too!!!
ive never seen a laser mast break there its normally near the place where the two parts conect. Most always the top part. Ive been K.O by my mast falling on me once and it dos hurt.
wat is the mast made out of

I know it won't ever happen, but Lasers would be much better if the class rules changed to allow carbon masts and booms.

At least he had a following boat, could have been a fatal trip if he had nobody out there to help. Scary.
