  • Your whole arm is locked. It just seems so tense.

  • @kizaman No not really tense. Some people prefer a bigger motion but I find this way I get more control. Often people refer to the loop performed this way as the European loop and the Chinese loop as a much bigger action with the arm.

  • is it me or is he saying k after almost everything he says?

  • how to do forhand topsin when ball comes into bh side after serve

  • @ismii12 If you want to play a forehand then you need to use your footwork to pivot around to the backhand side. Take a look at our lessons on basic footwork as this will show you the movement to use to get around. Once you are in position you can play your forehand as you normally would.

  • @pingskills then if my oponent giv return to wide forhand side its hard for me to reach there

  • @ismii12 This can be difficult. To counter this you need to improve your footwork. You could practice some drills where you get your practice partner to return wide to your forehand.

  • @pingskills Thanx For the info .. we usualy play the game bcz of lot of players in our comunity and 1 table availabe :D

  • @ismii12 You're welcome.

  • i hold the bat like chines style so how to do that

  • @amitgarg2000 We have a video on that too! Just search for PingSkills penhold.

  • very useful make new videos pls thanks in advance

  • @giorgosevaggelinos You're welcome. We are making more videos on a regular basis. Make sure you sign up to our email newsletter from our website so you stay in the loop!

  • wow

  • @galbu2000 Glad you liked it. Check out our website for more great Table Tennis videos.

  • When I do this, I hook my wrist downwards. Is there some disadvantage to playing this way? Should I try and keep my wrist level with the rest of my arm?

  • @leafkill9 Doing this you will probably generate some more sidespin on your loop. This can be very effective but as there is more sidespin and less topspin, it is a slightly less consistent shot. We have a video on this very stroke on our website called forehand sidespin topspin. Have a look and see if this is the stroke you are talking about.

  • i have a ques., if the backspin by the opponent is having low speed (i.e. the second bounce of the ball will also be on the table) , then the topspin shot is obviously not possible. Then what shot to play?

  • @Avikalp1 good question. Then you can play the push or the flick. We have lessons on our website explaining both of these shots.

  • i have question, what strategy do you use against choppers? do you just slow loop it to them, because i have a hard time with choppers. and when i try a nice fast loop at them they either go off the table or they go in the net cause some times i compensate for it too much when it doesnt have enough spin i think, plz help wat do i do....

  • @Sk8ingGuitarplayer Great question. You need to think about the speed, spin and placement of your shots and work on reading the spin that they put on the ball. We have had some questions about this on our website in the Ask the Coach section. You can go there and search for choppers to find out. If you still need more information you can "Ask the Coach" yourself on our site. Good luck!

  • @pingskills thnk u for responding, i think i know what to doo now..

  • @Sk8ingGuitarplayer No worries. Good luck!

  • i have a question , is this stroke usually the third ball attack when my opponents pushes back my serve?

  • @PreferabIe yes. The serve is counted as the first stroke, your opponent's push as the second and your topspin attack is referred to as the third ball attack!

  • can you make a video about how to return a ball with a great amount of backspin?/

    please,,,

    thank you PingSkill! nice tutorial!

  • @kill2head65 The key to generating spin is to have a fast brushing contact. You need to have a decent rubber on your bat too. We actually have a DVD for sale on our website all about returning serve.

  • this is almost empty ball not backspin, there is no big deal to attack such a ball

  • pingskills r the best.Really helpful,thnxx a lot.

  • his back doesnt really disappear guys...look at it.

  • uhm_Î_fÊÉl_sò_lÕñëlý_toÐaý

  • ah this explains why my drive doesnt go over... it's a backspin serve

  • what kind of paddle would you guys reccomend for an intermediate player within a medium budget?

  • @80pirt Try the PingSkills Touch with Mark V. You can find out more information about this on our website.

  • gud vid

  • @hkoerwer Thanks!

  • You guys criticising him, are you for real? if your so good why did you look up a tutorial video. No you dont know how to spin so stfu. This guys no world champ but his shots r epic. He could beat most

  • his left food shoult not go backwards when he hits the ball and his right shoulder shoult turn more towards the table

  • Whenever i do that , the ball will fly up High in the air then land on the opponents' table with side spin and they usually smash hard then i cant return with the lob. The lob is very hard to master as when u r standing close to the table, you do not have enough time to make the lob. SO if i stop using forehand topspin. what should i use???

  • @zzgoodzzsg Great question. Try asking this on the Ask the Coach section of our website. We have more space to answer you there and all your questions are recorded for you to look back on.

  • @zzgoodzzsg : maybe the spins of your opponent is not that heavy. sometimes it depends on the level or degree of their spins. check their rubbers and how they're hitting the ball.

  • I just bought a good racket of Donic and I am trying to learn a few skills to show off at school when I play. You are really helping, thanks! I subscribed as well :)

  • 256 like this video and 25 dislike this video i think this vid is so nice tut!!!

  • @maniac19921 Thanks!

  • Every time i hit the ball, it goes way to far. Help me plz.

  • @TheColbster77 you should need more practise how to spin properly...lols

  • Thanks for the nice video. Now if the back spin chop is slow marginally reaching the edge of the table what should I do? risking a top spin drive or chop it back? what should be the technique to make a top spin drive over the table (shorter balls)? dropping the wrist fully, and try to hit the ball with the lower edge of the bat helps?

  • @abed83a Great questions. There is not enough room in these comments to give a detailed answer. Try using the ask the coach section of our website. You can ask questions and look back over our answers at any time.

It is not really possible to make a full topspin drive off a short ball that would bounce twice on the table. Take a look at our lesson on the forehand flick for how to return this type of ball. Of course you can always push the ball back short yourself which is a good option.

  • @pingskills Thanks a lot. I will put the questions in the coach section.

I understand. It would be more like a flick. I found bh flick easier than fh. Need more practice on that.

  • I prefer simple forehand spin which after touch table goes forward, earlier I did spin just moving hand like this guy,and some low balls went to net after spinning them..

But coach told me that I need to spin it using my wrist, exactly as this guy + wrist on punching ball, and I was amazed what balls I could spin (after that practise I won one very good guy for a first time..) ,and that spin is good ,but I'm interested in some more spinning ball, can you give me any advice ?

  • booooooring lol

  • This is probably the most important stroke in tabletennis! To start of learning this stroke the technique in the video is ok, but for advanced guys it's horrible! To hit a ball fast with a lot spin in it, you have to use your underarm as well to generate enouth explosivness, keep your arm static at 90° and take the power from your shoulder is quite a bad idea, but tu start of and get the feeling for the ball it is ok!

  • Any tips or deals on how to brush the ball more? I think i'm hitting or making to much contact with the ball but as I have not been playing to long I'm not sure.

Any help from anyone greatly appriciated.

    Thanks

  • HI, i recently played against this guy that has a really superior short chop/push, everytime i try looping the ball after after he chops, the ball would go straight down. it really feels like trying to pushing a boulder up and most of the time my ball never gos over the net. So is there any good ways that i can train to like push the ball up? i heard that you are suppose to use your legs but i don't really know how that works. can you give me some suggestions please?

  • @idanlin1 hey man if the pushed ball lands close to the net, step ur right foot forward(if ur a right hander) and try pushing too. if the ball is high, u can drive it but if low, pushing is best for me.

  • looks like drive

  • he uses tenergy not omega II..

    but both good rubber

  • pingskills, i think you forgot to show when or at what point or part of the ball is to be hit. i'm having difficulties on this. Please help!

  • i think this is an excellent tool for people of all standards, even those who think they are an expert. The slow motion is a great tool for people like me who want to see where the head is positioned at and after contact..im going to go visit the actual web site for sure

  • Xiom Omega 2 - Excellent Rubber

  • i allready knew it xD.

  • Hi, what is the ruber used in this video? Thanks

  • its called pen15 rubber x9

  • great video, really helpful.

  • thank you

  • good;)

  • hi i've watched some of your instructional videos, since i wanted to be in table tennis since i was in grade 5 (i'm year 7 now.) And thanks to these videos, you have provided me with some good reasons to take up table tennis. Thank you so much! AND to all those people posting hater comments, these are free, so stop critisizing otherwise he might decide to stop posting more!

  • thanks~ i too much trouble pulling the ball up...

with my loop. when 2200 players play me they chop....and off it goes to the net...(70%)

so thanks guys!!! ill try that 90 deg. thing

  • @waterman159 Try using the Ask the Coach section of our website to ask questions as we check there a lot more regularly. Thanks for watching.

  • @waterman159 YEHA!

  • is that at msac? lol

  • thanks a lot

  • Squeaky shoes you got there,

  • lol its not much back spin in the trianers shots...

  • Lol what's with the thumbs downs? xD.

I agree and don't think there is much backspin in them otherwise he wouldn't have hit some off the table.

Good to start of with low backspin though, bloody hard shot to play lol.

  • i appreciate the time u guys took out of ur day make free instructional videos

How can ppl criticize free advice?

    Thanks for the tips guys

  • even free stuff needs to be criticized if it's bad. take a look at expert village table tennis videos and you'll see what i mean.

pingskills however do an excellent job and their instructional videos are great stuff.

  • Clever....

  • there is actually another way if you just started and seem to 'blunder' your topspin, just go and cut or spin the ball back the other direction, this works against people who are always using a backspin serve and it is easier to pull than a topspin.

  • nice topspin mate

  • Backspin is created whenever the bat of your opponent is either going down or forward to spin the ball while topspin is created when the ball is spun upwards or forward by the bat. When there is totally no hitting and total spin, no noise will be produced. If you can hear a loud noise from the bat of your opponent, chances are it is either no or mild spin. Hope this helped

  • If you heard a loud noise from the bat of your opponent, that basically means you give him time to put in full strength, and the ball would come with full spin, and speed...

  • u are indeed

  • can i also use this to counter a backspin serve?

  • Comment removed

  • I lol'd.

  • When are you going to do a video on how to jump the net after winning?

  • the slow motion is faster, lol

  • lol the slow motion looks faster than the normal speed hehe

  • I was experimenting with forehand topspin and i was wondering what the perfect angle is to hold the paddle just before you make youre stroke...?

  • This really depends on a lot of factors, how high the ball is, how much backspin is on the ball, how hard you are hitting the ball, how much forward momentum you are using.

The best thing is to practice this stroke over and over. This way you will start to get the feel for the correct angle under different circumstances.

  • Thx for the fast reply! I guess i have to practise even more... :-]

    Greatings from Holland!

  • hi i am a beginner i've been playing for only a few weeks. i am not really sure wat the back spin is? n how to read it? is it only created when ur opponent use the push? looking forward to ur reply. anyone help? thx

  • Hi, backspin is always in the push or in long pimples, it takes time and some experience to read, how much backspin is coming

  • pRoZ Gg+++++

  • 1:36 nice one!!!

I think this was a great lesson...you guys rock!!! I need to improve on this exact shot! and I am sure I can do better watching this :)

  • uhhh no...you can't hit a ball with backspin easily over the net with a forehand...you need to put a top spin on it or chop it to counter the spin...

  • Wooo....how many balls he had in his hand at the same time....

    : P ..

  • XMIR10C - if u really want to see an instructional video on how to play against backspin which is taken from an actual match then check out Tepper vs Hoshino, Geelong, circa 1986. it should be on youtube somewhere.

  • yes? My discussion was around the false body angles and rules portrayed here.

  • I don't think it's a false angle...everybody has a different style...we are not all waldners or Timo Bolls :)

going back to the video and Jeff's shot...I would give him a 10 rating out of 10 because he really dug the ball out of the ground and it went into the CORNER!!! which is awesome :)

  • Thats what really irritates me. All this form and execution and training thats false if you watch the World Champs. If they listened to you guys , where would they be??

  • The 90 degree armpit - see Waldner vs ma Lin for a counterexample

  • Take your pick

  • Fact is, AMERICAN GRIP is statistically inferior.

  • If they would tell the truth, Ill get off the board. They dont tell both sides

  • The person who thinks they are training us to be great TT players, when in fact its false

  • XMIR10C who are you talking to

  • tell us the truth please.

  • Now that we know the penholder is correct, we will adjust the elbow to -7 degrees at rest

  • "Let me give you an example" "One of the main errors Americans make is to teach people the wrong GRIP

  • because the players are better, not the grip... grip is really just a matter of choice, neither is better than the other

  • Beg to differ. The theory here is totally wrong for penholder. Penholder for example is NOT WHAT YOU SAY. Are yuou training us to be amatuers?

  • Wrong!!! Its the grip. You Americans keep hoping. If you would adopt penholder, you may win some championships. Try It!!!

  • So let me state some probability theory. The probability that you will return a forehand penholder smash is less than the probability that you will give me a backhand I cannot return.

  • Why do you North Americans keep telling us that the Penholder is inferior?? You give us physics and math of why its theoretically wrong, but we still keep beating you?

  • Where is your vid called "The Grip" please. What you teach is 100% non-penholder , which has dominated you

  • See Waldner vs Ma Ling for the correct NON-90 degree back position

  • Im sorry here. Im really getting irritated. If you theories are so correct then why do have so many ops? PENHOLDER???

  • For a lesson in this see Waldner vs. Ma Ling. This video is wrong. One of the main errors we make is listening to instructors.

  • Im sorry Pingskills. You training is in in direct opposition to Chinese tactics

  • I must hold the racquet in the hand with top the spin loosely or correctly firmly

  • hm... is that in australia? cuz looks like msac

  • It is Australia and it is MSAC.

  • Good info! I often make the mistake you mention, a too flat motion.

  • great video thankyou but just a few questions. firstly, shouldnt the elbow be bent far more at the start of the swing than it is demonstrated here so as to minimize the chances of generating too much power? also, re- 0.42-0.49 - isnt that the CORRECT technique? my russian coach told me it is. keep up the good work guys.

  • i think so, too.

  • Yeah, his arm is waaay too straight and he runs a great risk of hitting the ball with some power. also, i think he needs to start his backswing at the same height as the top of the bounce, contact the ball perfectly flat, and THEN spin it. still, its a great video thanks.

  • if im playing a aggressive player with heavy backspin i play defencivley and simply angle my bat upwards and let the balls momentum carry it over the net from my bat.

  • i do the same thing only opposite

    for when im playing top-spinners

  • In order to block extreme top-spin

( If your the guy playing him up above)

You can easily return every shot by holding your bat in a sideways open position its a lot easier than trying to match his tospin

  • sweet. makes sense and helps alot.

  • that looks kinda like a drive to me

  • My backhand spin is fine but i can't say the same for my forehand topspin!

When I spin with forehand, most of the times the ball goes over the table by 5 inches or so. Should i "brush" the ball more gently (holding back) or....? I hope some1 can help me out on this. Thx in advance!!

And 2 Pingskills, THANK U GUYS SO MUCH for these great vids!!!

  • 1- play around. get a patient partner to place you some balls to play with. try different methids of returning them trying to put topspin in them. try brushing the ball more, hitting it harder, hitting it down more etc etc.

2- i had this problem. the way i found to solve it was to hit the ball harder, and faster. if you dont put enough topspin on it the ball wont curl down and hit the table. and if you dont hit it hard enough it will just float off.

    just play around..

  • Thx elfasa!

I trained nearly 11 hours last week and i finaly get the hang of it! :D

Hit the ball under a steeper angle and with a fair amount of speed. It works! Thx

  • no problem.

    glad it helped you :D

  • If a player is playing with pips out rubber and used the push on my side. How am I supposed to deal with that? Knowing that pips out, generally, produce their own spin but doesn't give spin back.

  • Mt. San Antonio college? in walnut,ca?

yes on los angeles stadium!! Put Walnut on the map!!

  • Im just wondering is that MSAC that you are making these videos at?

  • Good spotting. It certainly is MSAC.

  • Did the "MSAC" written on the red dividers give it away? :)

  • any one else TIRED of the disrespect that

    Table tennis recieves from people

I cant tell ya how many times people told me

    " Ping Pong is a joke, it's not a real sport !"

BUT morons if its not a sport why's it in the olympics?

Im just venting out my frustration with non-players hatin!

  • exxxactlyyyy american football's not in the olympics! its not a sport!!

  • Please forgive those who do not understand table tennis, is not ping pong. It took me years before I started to get to understand and enjoy the game. Can you tell a summer butterfly about winter snow?

  • Thanks for posting. Remember guys that they're just introducing some basics; the techniques will be understood differently by each persons interpretation and position to the ball. I'd say use your legs to lift, rotate at the waist and attack backspin at it's highest point( you can still vary your spins/direction).

Practice looping against short, medium, & long pips pushes and blocks.

Really focus on relaxing, using technique & timing. No brute stength.

  • At 1:18 I heard that your foot maybe bumped on the foot of the table. Did it hurt?

  • yea.. i wonder too did it hurt?

  • Hi I have a problem: (lefthander)

If I want make a topspin from my forehand to the forehand of my opponent, the most balls go over the table....

why? That is my biggest problem....

[Sorry for my english, answer maybe in german?]

  • It could be a number of things, the most common problem is not generating enough topspin which helps the ball dip onto the table.

To generate the topspin you need to brush the ball. This can take a while to master.

If you have any more questions then try the Ask the Coach section of our website.

  • hey^^

  • usually when the ball is backspining...the ball will hit the net when i topspin....can u giv me some advice

  • You need to lift the ball up to counter the backspin. Do this by making your swing more vertical. Swing from down low to up high. Take another look at this video and then compare the swing with the forehand topspin against block video. You will see how the swing is more vertical to lift the backspin up and over the net.

  • That looks pretty similar to loop, doesnt it?

  • Forehand topspin or forehand loop, these are the same strokes.

  • i u go in to low with more of an angle with topspin it will b better right

  • hey Habi3360 and olliebolllie...i play with backhand red and forehand black xD haha

  • is this good practice??? i play on a really small table and when i play on a big table my shots hardly ever hit the net or go out should i continue doing this or just stay with big table my table is about 3/5 size of normal table

  • I think it is OK as a variation but in general I would recommend playing on a full size table.

  • Could you tell me and tip to my backhand ? My coach says that i do it wrong. Could you tell me how to do backhand? Send me a PM or something.

  • Tell me how to smash with backhand and do backhand block.

  • Have a look at our other videos. We have one on the backhand block and one on the forehand smash. We don't have a lesson on the backhand smash because if the ball is high enough to smash you should have enough time to get into position and play a forehand smash.

Good luck with your Table Tennis.

  • Good lesson, but you should have told you really have to put your shoulder down, very important. It's way easier to learn because you automaticly put your arm down aswell.

    good job

  • lessen 2

    black is backhand xD

  • not always, you can choose. Some people think you can make someone crazy with playing backhand red and forhand black.

  • I know it is probably wrong, but I like to point the racket downwards and flick it up with my wrist during the stroke for some more spin. Seems to work though :D
