I doubt you'll pick up dressmaking, but do you know how you could do something good with that urge? Learn to darn your socks.

Move onto sewing on buttons and mending tears, if you get into it. I wouldn't have believed this in my own teenage years, but adulthood can sneak up on you before you pick up half the skills you'll need to live on your own. Lots of people live with crappy clothing instead of making and effort. Plus a new craft is always nice.
