Physically the southern Italians are quite olive skinned however the majority from middle and upper Italy are fair skinned and there are quite a few blonde and redhead Italians as well. Spike Lee should have cast the white woman as Anglo (w.a.s.p) type instead of the darker italian type. I think he knew what he was doingchoosing an italian since there darker but still white appearance 'blends' more and causes less controversy. My point being that it was the western Europeans that colonized and took part in the slave trade and not the east or south Europeans.
Anyways, Hollywood still keeps this subtle trend now but instead uses Hispanics\Latinas to fill the white woman role.
