wtf? A Long EZ with a rocket motor strapped onto its butt? Oh crap. I see some folks getting some BD-5's into this mix. hehe

Not likely.
Limitted fuel quantity... they pulse the rockets in bursts and glide in between.(also no throttle)
Requires a decent L/D (Glide Ratio)
Though I could see the BD5 coming back with these rocket motors by a few experimenters... remember the Me163 Komet?

this is madness... although there will be lots of accidents, this should greatly improve rocket technology, which is good.

I like it. I can't help but notice that the exhaust isn't nearly as dramatic as in the animation. Perhaps some powdered copper or barium could be injected into the exhaust, to give that long, bright, colorful rocket trail you see in the animation.
But with or without the long trail, this is very cool.
