Hey, jakejumpover. Beowulf was a Geat. The Geats were a Scandinavian tribe living in southern Sweden. They were vikings, and unlike the Greeks, they had to constantly fight for their food and resources. Also, the Greek phalanx is nothing compared to the Viking sheltron and the Dane Axe could easily cleave into the Spartan bronze armor. Leonidas wouldn't stand a chance against Beowulf.

I quite agree. My history teacher who was also a former marine swore that the toughest combatants were the Spartans. Also said, the phalanx was inpenetrable.

We're talking about 300 foot soldiers holding off a whole army, and the only way they were defeated was at the hands of one man who showed the Persians the hidden paths in the mountains which led to their backs. They would've held the Persians at Thermopylae if not for that.

If I go into battle, I'd take a Spartan with me any day.

even if beowulf is based on a real person i doubt heavily that the person could stand up to the real leader of the spartans. there is just no way that he would have been skilled enough. i mean we are talking about the captain of the most skilled army of his time. they trained so hard itsextremeness not duplicated in any current military. Also the fighting style of Leonidas was more modern then Beowulf( beowulf lived first if he lived) meaning it was most likely improved drastically

Grendel stood for the Celts and the dragon stood for death in Beowulf story. Beowulf is from the Anglo Saxons, he is beleived to be a real person, but obviously did not slay dragons, there are just underlying meanings. Leonidas is real but that isn't his true Greek name. the real name is Velas, or that is the shortened name. And there was a comic book 300 and that is what the movie is based off of, and the comic book was based off of true events.

Ok...sooo Beowulf killed a freacken dragon almost at the end of the movie and had to suicide to do that also he took on about 12-15 sea monsters during a swimming race ( In a freackeng Storm) and...King Leonidas united 300 spartans and with that took out a quarter of a million persian soldiers including "the immortals.." but still lost against the persian army i dont know WHO would win but...i bet my balls that Beowulf would would win in a 1v1 with King Leonidas :P

Homers Iliad is also a recorded poem(the oldest int he world) but this doesnt mean that achilles was demigod or the gods were foghting among men. This is the difference between Leonidas and Beowulf, the one is a recorded historical person(hes grave still survives) the other is a myth recorded by a poem.
