The lyrics reflect both those points of view. (This came out of his book Scar Tissue that I'm reading right now and if you're a fan of Anthony Kiedis and RHCP I suggest you read the book. It's amazing.)

Jack Sherman did. Hillel quit RHCP to join another band that got a record deal and on OHM Dave Navarro did. Now John quit and Josh Klinghoffer is the new one.
