Just watched this. Simple Japanese entertainment. Fun and doesnt take itself too serious. You know if this was American it would be full of that sickly green colour the screen goes in modern horror when shit is about to happen and it would be full of screaming models and guys who look like wimps but somehow still kick ass.

I like how it's all old-fashioned special effects, no computers. It's much more entertaining when you know something is obviously fake, especially when zombies are involved.

That aside, most people are missing the main point of the film, it's not just blood and guts and swords and guns... there's an eternal battle between you and your soul going on, and this is a representation of this. All films are a representation of this.

so just watch it, try to find the "Ultimate Versus" Dir. Cut that re-edits and adds newly filmed scenes to better flesh out the whole story!

It kinda makes me think that if Japan made Evil Dead, it would look something like this.

Dude this movie is old.... I got this back around X-mas 2000 about a month or two after the premiere in Japan. This movie KICKED ASS .. Hideo Sakaki is great in most of his roles. If you liked this check out Alive (2002 JA)

Actually according to Kitamura its more of a sequel than a remake. You know how in the beginning of this movie the narration/subtitle mentioned there were 666 portals to the other side and The Forest Of Resurrection was one of them? Well the sequel takes place at another portal location and it is somewhere in America. It takes place at the same time as the original Versus. Its gonna be directed by Kitamura so it will probably retain the same feelings as the original.

I checked Amazon uk and it's still in stock. And the good thing about the old Tartan DVDs is that it is 'region 0' so it can be played in all regions. Although that said the movie is ok, was expecting better, it starts off nicely with a well executed (pun intended) feudal Japan/samurai scene, would have liked more of that. I eventually traded it in for Zatoichi which is altogether a far superior film.

The last scene is the next incarnation. Sakaguchi had started out as the good guy in the first incarnation and Sakaki was evil to the core. Now Sakaki is the good guy and Sakaguchi and his merry band have destroyed the earth. The baldness is due to radiation poisoning.

This movie was great, minus some daft plot holes, it was a decent buy. I laugheda t the humour, and I was drawn in by the action. For people who haven't seen it, think Matrix Reloaded/Shaun of the Dead with more guns and guts, set in a forest, with a load of wacky-er characters. The main actor took quite a beating, breaking a tooth and three ribs in the process of the film being made. He had to have his broken tooth fixed with glue in order to continue shooting!
