It is not up to man to decide whether or not "hugging" is inadequate. It is not up to man to decide whether or not military use is necessary. We have killed countless more precious creations of God through our "war on terror" than the terrorism actually caused in the first place. I wonder if Christ thought violence "was necessary" as he was being nailed to the cross....?
We cannot let our allegiance to America outweigh our allegiance God's Kingdom.
I understand his philosophy of not using force. But does america do when another slaughter of humans takes place to such a grand scale such as what happened to the jews? do we just pray for them? go over and hug their enimies? Detrich Bonhoffer considered it his duty to kill hitler to stop the slaughter of innocent human beings. Non-resistance works to a point but one cannot conquer all evil by "hugging" them too death.
@mellowtribe Are you a Christian? When Christ told us to love our enemy was he wrong? Christ, during his time, arguably had the power gather a violent uprising to end the persecution of the Jews by the Roman empire. When his enemies held him did he resist? Did he rebuke Peter for trying? I think that's how it goes.
"If we pick up the sword we will die by the sword."
When Peter cut a guys ear off for coming for Jesus. He tells paul to sheeth his sword and then places the soldiers ear back to his head.
I'm not quite sure about just war or collateral damage anymore myself. Do we really need to crack a few eggs to make an omlet does teh ends really justify the means? The OT speaks of war but how many times does the NT speak of it?

It isn't the job of the church to "conquer all evil". It's to be faithful.

I don't like how he bashes the use of military force (though I agree with most of what he says about other issues).
There are times when these things must be done, especially negotiations amount to nothing in the end.
There's also the fact that the military strived to avoid civilian casualties while the enemy they faced used them as human shields.

I agree with all he has to say and as a veteran of the US Military (USN) I agree most strongly with him on his views on military force.
Peace to all

i spent 14 months in iraq on the frontlines as a quick reaction force for the theater of operations, and i never saw anybody use human shields...

he's talking about Christian support of war.
Christians are called to be martyrs for God, not fighters for a country...that is his point.
