Yes, the church is too often a stumbling block to what God is doing. I attended a church where the pastor fell under the spell of John Bevere's book "The Covering." Suddenly he had to "release" people to do anything. All the small home groups suddenly had to begin discussing his sermons--no off-message discussions allowed. I was angry and taken aback by the heavy-handedness, and amazed that so many simply fell into line and accepted it like docile sheep. I praise God I got out of churchianity!
Its funny how these churches become suspicious when people have bible studies and a real desire to study the word. However when people are arranging house parties they don't say anything. I was in a place just like this.
I was in a "covering" church for 13years. It turned into a full fledged cult. I encourage you to put away the books you may have been exposed to and reread the bible. This pattern is not word. I felt emabarassed and rather stupid for ministering for so many years under a delusion that caters to fleshy control and lack of faith. It is hard to tell whether or not you are serious or not, no offense it just comes off real hokey. I dig the surfing favs. Bless you.
Great message, love the analogy...

Any man who raises himself above the work of the Holy Spirit is EVIL! I escaped Christianity to find Christ outside of it.

this sounds so typical of an independent baptist church ...POPE CREED at IBC in Clinton MD should see himself in the hypocrisy
I lead a person to the lord at IBC and gave them a subscription to the "Sword of the Lord" and was rebuked by the Cardinal Dove and told to cancel it!

Pretty scary stuff that 'covering' idea.

Oh noes! Tim and his co-workers are studying the Bible! We must stop them! :P
Just a little humor of my own. My Church doesn't even teach the Bible anymore. They're too busy asking for money.

Too funny yet true. Let's do better churches.

That's why I don't attend traditional churches anymore; too many rules about what you can't do or wear. It's annoying.

lol! I hate the spiritual covering teaching that u have to sit under human leadership. Ugh. It normally leads to cult-like thinking.
