Idk, imo for every-day use and just gaming and entertainment, I love my PC... actually, I built myself a gaming rig, I have Vista though, and vista runs FINE!!!! I do agree it could run just slightly a bit more stabilized/faster but I'm going for windows 7 soon.
I don't hate macs, actually I think they're pretty cool, (the macbooks) like for example maybe for when I go to college it'd be nice to have one :)
"got tired of running antivirus antispyware" LOL.. why would you not run them on mac? There are def still virus' there, sorry, hate to break it to you. I've even gotten virus' on my iPhone! lol
@insidmal I've never seen a virus on a mac..ever. BUT, I've seen enough crashes on them. For me, I'm making the switch because of workflow and cleanliness. Windows just doesn't cut it for what I do. Plus, it takes me using like 3 programs on windows to do something I could do with one on mac. Mac has the art of the user interface downpat like nobody else. Plus I LOATHE windows' constant updates every time I turn the damn thing on, hogging up my RAM. Its hard to stay creative and inspired on PC.
@0Orion There'll definately be a perceived loss. My options at the moment are windows or mac. Mac hardware is FAR too expensive, so i'm thinking of self building some workstations. Then i'll be stuck with windows, this would be fine if only windows didn't make such a meal out of performing basic functions (ie no mac like drag and drop, usb's etc don't pop up on the desktop when you plug them in) Also antivirus eats up ram and i'd prefer not to install it on the machines for rendering.
@0Orion No I already use it on a mac- it's free as its still in beta at the moment. No plug ins though. I'm probably stuck on windows for workstations because the cost of mac pro's is simply too high. I could build the equivalent machine for 50% of the cost or less.
@grahamhg If you're running workstations for any serious tasks, I highly advise AGAINST custom builds. What you say on up front cost can potentially lose you far more if/when one of those systems craps out and you have to act as your own tech support, which just takes you away from your usual work and takes a system with it, losing productivity. Even if you end up getting HP Z series or Dell Precisions, getting a ready made is the best option. Mac Pro = win of course lol.
i can do this show in less than 30 seconds, switch to mac, way better, i just switched, its way awsome, and 4GB of ram is definatly better than 2GB, cause can do more multi tasking, this also depends on the type of RAM ure running, DDR, DDR2 or DDR3
ya if you never want to play video games. I got a buddy who has a mac. Its nice, but like the iPhone you have to buy each and every update and little apps.
@dmc040 I have an Asus G51 - 6gb of ram (upgradeable to 8) with p9700 Intel processor + Nvidia 260m GTX. Can't beat PCs as far as laptop performance specially now with the new I7 processors.
See Sager NP8690 & ASUS G51J-A1 for example.
My laptop has Ubuntu Linux 9.10 plus XP in a virtual machine and is powerful enough to run all the remaining XP apps with the virtual machine (adobe suite for example).
And for you people out there saying that Macs are faster than PCs, I can build a computer as fast as the fastest Mac Pro with 1/3 of the price.. so don't come here with speed issues. Macs win at aesthetics, but thats about it ;D
@FASSY524 three words...APPLE LOGIC PRO 9....windows can't fuckin touch that shit. Thats my number 1 reason for my switch, is music recording is a fuckin hassle on windows.
Ok send me one then with the highest end music programs, Pro tools HD, Logic Pro, FL Studio/7. Make it never have viruses and make it so It can boot in 3 seconds. And shut down in 1 second. And make it look good. Macs are made of Eco friendly materials.
I never had any problems with it... Any crashes, viruses, BSOD, etc. It's perfect for me!
When I use my wife's macbook air, I feel like you don't have as much settings as you do on Windows... It's like both: for "everyone" (meaning, noobies with computers), with big buttons, pretty interface and not so much configuration. Or for experts that know how to use the Terminal, etc.
I completely agree. I have never had any problems with viruses on Windows and I doubt many expert users really have.
For years I even ran without any antivirus software at all. Running antivirus does not make up for idiots that turn off UAC and run virus.exe then complain that their OS has something wrong with it when really it is just them.
Windows gets viruses because the number of Windows users that are morons far outweighs the entire market share of Mac.
no because I could build two good computers for the price of a imac that are faster, macs are a joke, kind of like a game, a very frustrating one lol worse than ET for the atari
faster, depends on the tasks, and the hardware, and the operating system. really the only vista can compete with the mac, is that vista must be compensated for which most of the time can only be done via building a custom building, or buying a laptop. also depends what software is competing against each other, and how well it was made on each operating system. the only way vista can beat mac is compensated for, which I don't think its possible in the all in one area, and mini itx area.
I prefer pc because I am used to it, and it has always worked in my experience, on the mac I have had many problems, and not much support from apple support help, so I end up searching forums to find a fix, and trial and error is used. if you prefer mac osx that is fine, I prefer windows/ linux, but I can't make a good opinion on vista, because I don't use it all of the time like you at your job. I like how it is easy to control my windows machine. mac is good for the average user though IMO.
Depends what you get, the best pc will always beat the best mac at the moment on the hardware side. I have a Pc that beats the macbook pro and it only cost 700$.
I run Vista x64 on a decent (water cooled and overclocked but still cheaper than a Mac) machine and it is lightning fast, even after having it installed since the release of Vista.
As far as I can tell, Vista runs at least the same speed as XP. It just needs more hardware to do it. What do people expect considering XP is from 2001?
The trick is not filling it up with seven shades of crap that slow it down.
Weird to see Kevin standing up, get back to your Diggnation couch dammit!
And I don't see why people make such a big thing about Vista being crap, I've been using it for nearly a year and it works as well as my previous XP machine.
Have just bought a linux machine and am considering trying to find a cheap deal on a Mac mini just to have my fingers in each operating system pie
Built my rig with a 9800gso and a 19 inch 5ms lcd monitor under 300. You don't get that with a mac. Oh ya, btw both are now intel and there's a linux bootloader that allows you to install mac.
I dont get it either, if you have a recent computer there is no reason not to use Vista. The only thing is that you need a little SKILL, disable UAC and tune it a little and it work like a charm, i even prefer it to my FC9 or Ubuntu VMs. I run a Q6600 @ 3.6Ghz, 4GB ram, 2x 9800GTX+ and a lot of HDDs on Vista Ultimate x64. My PC cost me about one third of a comparable mac, since they now use same PC hardware. MAC are overhyped and expensive home decoration piece.
I don't understand why Vista is so bad?? I run tons of design software, play most of the newest intense games like Crisis and run things with no issues and the operating system is so reliable. If something does happen good ol Ctrl Alt Delete will bring up the task manager INSTANTLY no matter how deep the freeze is, and then 'end program' really does end it. Maybe its cause i do have 4 gigs, but im only running dual core, 3.4 Who knows....
windows vista has mac in it.. all you people say vista sucks but it really doesnt, it just dont have the drivers (YET) IT JUST CAME OUT! yea yea apple does blow it away but vista is still good
Vista is a year old already and older than Leopard (which runs great already). Though I will give you credit because a lot of the original problems with vista have already been solved, but a lot of people still find it frustrating.
i play games on my mac (on mac os x leopard). actually i started getting interested in computer games after i bought my 20" imac. The display is so clear and big that i imagined games like halo to be running on it. I tried it and it worked. Any games/apps can play on a mac but its up to you to choose whether u want to wait(u might not need to wait) for the mac versions to come out or just get a windows version and run it through bootcamp or virtual software. I guess; its the best of both worlds.
you can also use crossovermac. I`m planning to switch to mac too. But I don`t now how well overcrossmac will work. And I don`t know if I would really like it because if it`s incompatibility.
I don't understand the Bill Gates bashing all the time. He's was the ceo, but he doesn't actually code anything or play a part in making the OS. Also he retired so now you really can't blame him for anything
First of all NO OS will rule this world for all time. but Mac software WILL NOT take over the PC market. that is the fact END. Microsoft may go out of busiess 1 day, but this is not that day.
On that 4G vs 2G of RAM,both Mac, and PC use a 32-bit of (inless you buy the 64-bit) most computers sold come with a 32-but OS.
If you are running a 32-bit Os the computer can only use 3G of ram it is the way the kernel only supports up to 3G of RAM.
You obviously know nothing about the history of home computers. You get off the internet and read a book or something if you can't learn about it while surfing it.
if macs didn't cost so much more for so much less - then I would consider it.
If Mac was not so secretive with their code so that games could build for the platform rather then go through a drawn out licencing process and games actually decided to repay the shit they take from Apple and ran their games - then I may switch back.
But between the iron fist that is the mac code and the massive overpricing per gig - its going to be awhile before I switch.
You wanna talk about game development, mac games use OpenGL for games and widows games use microsfts proprietary DirectX. End of fucking story. Microsft won't even make directx10 for xp forcing users to upgrade to their newest pile of shit.
or u could get xp 64 bit os noob! typical mac noob all that dx10 is taking advantange of ur 64 bit cpu and the operating systyem has to be 64 bit to so stfu noob mac cunt go edit a file
I seriously considered moving to Mac last year but bought a new PC with XP on it. Main reason is the apps I use arent on Mac (FL Studio, Audition, Vegas) and although there are alternatives it would be a pain.
When I got my Mac i wasn't so sure of it but now I hate using windows. Expose is the most useful thing that I've ever used, that reason alone was enough to convince me.
For people who want to switch but like Gaming there are two solutions:
I have 4 GB of RAM in my iMac and personally believe that there is a big performance boost of 2 GB of RAM. I can do work, listen to music and rip a DVD (my own) at the same time without any slowdown.
i wish more clueless users would switch to the mac. then they wouldn't come to me to fix it for them. i don't like the mac but let's face it people who don't know what they are doing should be using the mac.
You can't possibly understand why Mac OS X is better until you commit to using it for awhile. You might think XP is OK, but you don't know. I use OS X in my life, but I have to use XP in my work, and so many things I do are much more difficult, more convoluted, and more time-consuming with XP.
Ya but Ubuntu is very unstable and don't get my started on video playback with compiz. Not to mention wireless sucks in Ubuntu and it's slower than XP.
I have a machine with XP Vista and Ubuntu, and XP is the most stable and I don't run anti-virus and I don't get viruses.. you just suck at using computers if you get infected with anything.
You think all Windows XP computers are infected from day one? What kinda retard explanation is that? You only get infected if you run exe's from shady sources, or if you don't know how to tell if a file is infected or not. Therefore since you get infected from day one, you suck ass with computers because I haven't gotten a virus since '05.
I have to agree with kevin its an amazing computer I am developing software on it now and it is so great to get away from this whole vista and xp craze its just too much work defending all the flaws of windows and keeping shit software off of it. I have my 360 and ps3 for gaming. My mac for work and entertainment and when Gates is gone windows will start disappearing with him like it should.
Vista really isn't as bad as they say it is. I have had a vista box for 9 months now and its a very stable and usable operating system if you know what you are doing...
Unfortunately you represent a minority. I know of at least 4 people that have Vista and only one of them is not having problems while the other three are either going back to XP or switching to Ubuntu
No I disagree. If you're a switcher than just installing a partition of windows through bootcamp and you'll be good to go game wise. That's what I did and haven't looked back to the days where I always used Windows. Now I always use Mac. But If I have a game I wanna run then BAM! right over to the Window's partition.
Windows XP already let's me do everything I want. Now that MacIntosh's are Intel chip based, apples ARE their operating system. I love that the answer to this is always "just buy windows too!". No thanks. I think I'll just buy windows. Works great.
I think that defeats the point since users are switching to the mac to avoid the operating system that is windows... ie. microsoft should start again :P
I showed this compiz video to a stupid mac head the other day, he was like .ohh yeah! SPACES! WTF?!?!?! .nooo douchebag! that is LINUX and you can only dream of having it all in a dumb mac!
I made the switch to mac about 8 months ago and IMO it is a a whole lot better than vista and xp which I used to use before . Every time I am forced to use windows, more specifically windows vista, I find that the operating system is far too complicated and annoying in comparison to OS X and within 5 minutes I become very frustrated...and this is coming from someone who is well versed with computers
he is the CREATOR of Digg. However he doesn't develop the site. he has people that do that. Kevin Rose knows what he's talking about. He has a history of tech hosting. Tech TV and now with the channel he also started Revision 3.
Well, it's about that time for someone to hate another generation for not draining their personality into the pool of monotony and despair that is "adulthood." As long as you're happy being angry that there are people that don't give up on entertainment technology when they're over 18, then it's just you're loss of livelihood and their gain of a hopeful future.

Mac is a PC with less expensive parts, a great looking case and a better OS but priced way more then PCs.
What sucks about Mac vs PC argument is that they never mention Linux as an alternative.
How about upgrading to linux and donating that $200 OS upgrade money to an opensource project that will be forever free and open?
Microsoft - you may be stuck with it.
Apple - Think different (or think my way)
Linux - Think MORE!

Long live the original!!
Bob1agis 4 years ago
I don't understand the Bill Gates bashing all the time. He's was the ceo, but he doesn't actually code anything or play a part in making the OS. Also he retired so now you really can't blame him for anything
stouffer88 3 years ago
What i sould have of said is you have NO place talking good about Mac, or PC inless you have owned almost EVERY OS made.
BSD, Linus, Mac, Microsoft.
If you want to go Mac you will loose ALMOST EVERY virus made, you will also loose ALMOST EVERY game, and all other apps.
THE ONLY THING MAC RUNS WELL IS BOOTCAMP!
Once Vista has support for SQL, and other software everything will be fine.
The only reason Mac hasn't dies is because of Microsoft's help, and Itunes.
adler234639 4 years ago
You're clueless adler, absolutely clueless.
inchaoswetrust 4 years ago 2
First of all NO OS will rule this world for all time. but Mac software WILL NOT take over the PC market. that is the fact END. Microsoft may go out of busiess 1 day, but this is not that day.
On that 4G vs 2G of RAM,both Mac, and PC use a 32-bit of (inless you buy the 64-bit) most computers sold come with a 32-but OS.
If you are running a 32-bit Os the computer can only use 3G of ram it is the way the kernel only supports up to 3G of RAM.

Many people say Macs are the best PC's to run windows. PC stands for personal computer you fucktard. GTFO the internet.

But between the iron fist that is the mac code and the massive overpricing per gig - its going to be awhile before I switch.
existentialvoid 4 years ago
You wanna talk about game development, mac games use OpenGL for games and widows games use microsfts proprietary DirectX. End of fucking story. Microsft won't even make directx10 for xp forcing users to upgrade to their newest pile of shit.
timg455 4 years ago
or u could get xp 64 bit os noob! typical mac noob all that dx10 is taking advantange of ur 64 bit cpu and the operating systyem has to be 64 bit to so stfu noob mac cunt go edit a file
staticxmako 4 years ago
Yea except 64 bit xp is fucking garbage. Compared to my fully 64 bit os x. That still doesn't change anything about dx10.
timg455 4 years ago
what the fuck are u talking about ur fully 64 os dude u prob dont evne have a 64 bit cpu fag what is urs? u using a genaric os fag?

I seriously considered moving to Mac last year but bought a new PC with XP on it. Main reason is the apps I use arent on Mac (FL Studio, Audition, Vegas) and although there are alternatives it would be a pain.
Strathycruise 4 years ago
What are you talking about I can run everyone of those apps.
timg455 4 years ago
Natively or via emulation? Suppose Apple did have to go and start using PC CPU's so it shouldnt be too much of a chore.
Strathycruise 4 years ago
Yes natively you dumb fuck its called windows.
timg455 4 years ago
When I got my Mac i wasn't so sure of it but now I hate using windows. Expose is the most useful thing that I've ever used, that reason alone was enough to convince me.
For people who want to switch but like Gaming there are two solutions:
1. Install Windows on your mac
2. Buy a console. PC gaming is dead

I never paid for an OS in my life. ThePirateBay is where it's all at. If you pay for software you're a loser.

timg455 4 years ago
i wish more clueless users would switch to the mac. then they wouldn't come to me to fix it for them. i don't like the mac but let's face it people who don't know what they are doing should be using the mac.
k00ltube 4 years ago
You can't possibly understand why Mac OS X is better until you commit to using it for awhile. You might think XP is OK, but you don't know. I use OS X in my life, but I have to use XP in my work, and so many things I do are much more difficult, more convoluted, and more time-consuming with XP.

timg455 4 years ago
I have a machine with XP Vista and Ubuntu, and XP is the most stable and I don't run anti-virus and I don't get viruses.. you just suck at using computers if you get infected with anything.
vahnx1337 4 years ago
Your full of shit. It's just been slow god damn slow/infected from day one you couldn't tell a difference.
timg455 4 years ago
You suck ass with computers.
vahnx1337 4 years ago
Umm ok, please explain.
timg455 4 years ago
You think all Windows XP computers are infected from day one? What kinda retard explanation is that? You only get infected if you run exe's from shady sources, or if you don't know how to tell if a file is infected or not. Therefore since you get infected from day one, you suck ass with computers because I haven't gotten a virus since '05.
vahnx1337 4 years ago
I have to agree with kevin its an amazing computer I am developing software on it now and it is so great to get away from this whole vista and xp craze its just too much work defending all the flaws of windows and keeping shit software off of it. I have my 360 and ps3 for gaming. My mac for work and entertainment and when Gates is gone windows will start disappearing with him like it should.

Mac's are great! so long as you never want to game again...
cory849 4 years ago 2
No I disagree. If you're a switcher than just installing a partition of windows through bootcamp and you'll be good to go game wise. That's what I did and haven't looked back to the days where I always used Windows. Now I always use Mac. But If I have a game I wanna run then BAM! right over to the Window's partition.
Dboy64 4 years ago 2
Windows XP already let's me do everything I want. Now that MacIntosh's are Intel chip based, apples ARE their operating system. I love that the answer to this is always "just buy windows too!". No thanks. I think I'll just buy windows. Works great.
cory849 4 years ago 4
Or you could just install Windows on your mac. Problem solved.
ieatwiteoutforfun 4 years ago
I think that defeats the point since users are switching to the mac to avoid the operating system that is windows... ie. microsoft should start again :P
