if you have epic stories like this one here, the best way to remake them is to do what Peter Jackson did with LoTR. Make it a 3 parter.
To build up the friendship between Jim and Silver and make the audience experience a true realistic bond between them. (Just like Frodo and Samwise)
The betrayal of Silver will then shredd hearts apart and maby some (if the producers will do it right) will drop a tear. I sure hope they will do a remake, Peter Jackson's style (but for now, this 1 rules :P)
It wouldn't work in three parts. There aren't three narratives.
You could make it two with the escape to the stockade being the climax of the first story. That could work really well, because you have vague resolution as Jim reaches the stockade and sees "the Union Jack fluttering".
@ParalysedMovies I feel like Treasure Planet, which is a futuristic take on the story, does a fabulous job with the Silver/Jim relationship, and it is only one movie.
@ParalysedMovies, I must disagree with you that this could be made into a multi-parter and not lose the pace and essence of the story. At most, I'd like a few more minutes. The only thing I miss from the book is Captain Smollett giving one of the mutineers a chance to join their side, and he does it - and Smollett never holds it against him from that moment. But Jim and Silver do NOT have a "true" bond or anything like real friendship. Silver is a murderer and a manipulator, and Jim knows it.
Elaborating on my previous post.... Remember the scene in the apple barrel? Silver was going to cut the throats of every honest man on board, including Jim if he wouldn't turn pirate. He is that kind of ruthless. He might have had a soft spot for Jim and would have saved him if he could, but never at the risk of his own life. And Jim is bitter that he was initially taken in by Silver, even if he too has a soft spot for the old pirate. But Jim is honorable; Silver is not and not meant to be.
@ceredigio In the book, Silver threw his crutch at Tom and it broke his back, paralyzing him (or so Jim guessed), and then Silver came up and stabbed poor defenseless Tom twice. I thought it rather sad.
@michaeljhartnettesq LOL....my grandparents taped this movie from TNT too. I watched it so many times the that the VHS wore out and won't play anymore. ;)

is the boat that they are rowing in really going that fast or does it have a motor hidden in the back somewhere?

I like the music in the fight scene between Long John and Tom - quite dramatic, although not that melodious

I thought in the book Silver just threw his crutch at Tom and it broke his back so he was killed and wasn't stabbed
