I started 40k about 3-4 months ago and I gotta say that the black reach is awesome! I remember splitting it with my friend he got the orks I got the space marines and i read the rulebook 5 times just to get a loose grip on the rules . I played a few games with him and went back down my local games workshop after beating my friend a lot. There as a apocolpse game on and i thought i would own!!! . Turn 1 killed a squad of wiches. Turn 2 the other squad of wiches killed everything i had !!! lol

so after years of fanboying over the wh40k universe (all the DoWs, more novels than I even care to count, the imperial infantryman's uplifting primer and even the kinda awful-ish ultramarines movie are amongst my most prized possessions) I kinda want to dabble in the more hands-on aspects of the game, and given my limited budget I figure this set would be a decent place to start.

is it? is the point difference significant for gameplay? do you need anything in addition to the set to get started?

@Fraxxxi you need model paint, including: brushes, and in colors of: white, yellow, blue (x2), black (x2), green, silver (x2). If you want state of the art looks ('eavy metal-ish), then you need Citadel Paint and in several more colors. You also will need: plastic cover sets (not included), 1 wide cardboard piece (preferably 1meter x 0.5 meter) and enough model grass to cover it. That will do it for the basics.

Don't let this opportunity slip though, Black Reach is a bargain in terms of WH40K!

@Fraxxxi i would find some people that play the game first and ask if they could show you how to play using their armys, cuz (as you know) there are a few diff armys you could use. this way you dose spend too much money on an army you find out you dont like.

The marines were great additions to my Ultramarines army and also was very enjoyable to burn the orks with a magnifying glass. They look alot better now and are actually worth their points in this state. It's a very good deal and a good start or addition to any player.

Hey I got a question, me and a comrade bought this set. One of the things that caught my attention where the terminators. I was wondering: isn't it illegal to field them without another troop choice? (because the set only includes one troop choice unit out of the compulsory 2 troop choices stated in the codex). 40K is a tough nut to crack when you're used to fantasy...

with the assult on black reach box you can convert the space marines into choas space marines with some bits and green stuff.

Yeah, but its a STARTER pack. If people new to 40k buy AoBR i dont think they got the skill or knowledge of bitz to convert them to decent chaos space marines. No they should make another starter pack starring another set of races (or perhaps just Space Marine and Chaos)

Since both me and my friend went into 40k from FB ( we will play both ) we bought 2 sets of black reach.

In that way we got a good ground to build an army on.

As other people have stated buying everything separate is much more expensive than buying this set.

Dont know if I will use the terminators in the future but for know, I have some the least! ;)

The 5 terminators are worth around 50 $, same with the dreadnought. So for the price of those two you get around 30 ork models, and another... 11 space marine models? something like that. + all the blast templates and such

assault on black reach is the best way to go for either space marines or ork's(Go with orks.). But there is also this other set that comes with tyranids and space marines but I'm not sure what thats called or if you can still get it.

some armies have good battleforces to start off with, such as tyranids, tau or necrons, which offer a decent army with minimal separate purchases. the AOBR set is a great way to get into it if your wanting to play orks or SMs. Some armies are super expensive to play as like Grey Knights and sisters of battle, and some you just need to buy the codex and start from scratch.

easiest way to start is go on GW's website, read some fluff, pick your fav and buy their codex and the rule book.

my black reach terminators have 2 holes on the base 1 for the foot and 1 for ... what goes in the other 1 cos i cant position the left foot to cover it ... its too close the the right foot hole :S

you recive some bolter casings or skulls on the spru so fill that hole with and add a little decoration look closely as there rather small

for the skin start witheither that foundation colour orc skin hide or whatever or you can use dark angels green cover all the skin with that, then dry brush snot green on top then if you want do a very light drybrush of scorpion green i think that gives an amaizng effect

i reccomend not painting the orks just put them together. Do this because if a friend gets assualt on black reach you can give him your unpainted orks and he'll give you unpainted space marines. only do this if you want to collect space marines mainly though.

if it has the slots along with the figures having the bar thing on their feet, just clip off the bar and glue them to normal bases.

work fine for me.... you need to glue them if ur only setting em in. use super glue on the little bar under their feet and put a dot where the left foot is hanging out over onto the base. hard to explain but hope it helps.

Is that captain ment to be Captain Cato Sicarius of the Ultramarines second company? Because he was the commander of the Assault on Black Reach campaign. He lead about 150 marines against 10,000 orks and was successful if I am correct. I have this set also, I decided to have a bit of fun with it and glued an ork to the drednaught's power claw to make it look like hes crushing an ork. Turned out better than I expected too =D

i heard siccarius is next in line for chapter master when calgar dies/retires as well. have you read up about the battle of maccrage? man that battle was intense, if i am correct the battle of maccrage is why half of cassius's body is bionic. he got ripped in half by a carnifex and survived apparently. and thanks for the comment about the drednaught :P

you can find used armies online or you can buy the army and pay to have someone paint it for you but modeling and painting is just as integral part of the game as playing. There's just something awesome about seeing the army you built and painted and invested time and energy into come together on the board. If you are worried about them not looking good then go hang out at your LHS and ask some people for advice and/or help painting, or go to GW's website, they tell you how to paint every army.
