Sugar Pops became Sugar Corn Pops, then Corn Pops. All the cereals dropped "sugar" from the official name since the 1970s. And yet, 1970s children were slimmer than those in the enlightened and informed 21st century.
@vangard213 The "government" didn't have to decide - one can SEE the obesity in people, though it's not from eating a bowl of incredibly sugary cereal - it's more from "supersizing" everything or eating a BOX of cereal at one sitting...
@shmuli9 I agree,no one works or does anything like they did back in the day so no real calorie burn. But the government does have a hand in it like they do everything now days.Don't get fat, don't smoke, don't spank your kids,to many don'ts today.
@vangard213 A negative attitude toward smoking makes sense, as it's rather unhealthy, for both the people doing the smoking that the unfortunate people who have the priviledge of inhaling their smoke, whether they like it or not, but you're right about the spanking. I don't think "beating" kids is good, but a swat to the butt is a LOT more effective than saying things like "go to your room and think about what you've done"...
@shmuli9 Well my whole point about government is they have no business in "legislating" what we should and should not do in our private lives. If I want to get fat, smoke and spank my kids thats MY business and only MY business,no one else should be involved. Now if my doctor advises me on my health thats ok,thats his job,it is not the job of government. So anyway......
@vangard213 Oh, I agree, but if smoking in public, it IS impacting other people, rather seriously (or should people just 'buck up' and accept that they might get lung cancer, even though they never smoked but they were subjected on a daily basis to other people's smoke?)... In general, you're right, with the caveat that people who want to do things freely ought to sign something saying "I won't make the government pay for something I did to myself (like not wearing a helmet while motocycling).
@shmuli9 I agree on the second hand smoke thing, that is not good in an enclosed area.I think as for the helmet law if one rides without or the state has a no helmet law then let the insurance company deal with it,i.e. higher premiums versus someone who wears one. It's really stupid to not wear a helmet on a motorcycle, ever been hit between the eyes with a June Bug at 70 mph ? LOL !!!
@vangard213 I never have been hit by one, but I actually know someone who lost an eye when he was riding down a freeway on a motorcycle without a helmet and a bee flew right into his eye... Ideally, the person riding SHOULD have insurance, but unfortunately, it seems a lot of people DON'T, and when they have a severe head injury, guess who pays for treatment (and rehabilitation, if it's possible)? The STATE! (On the other hand, I suppose NOT treating them is kind of harsh, too.)
@shmuli9 Yeah it's no fun taking bugs in the face & eyes at 70 mph.I thought it was it cool to ride with no helmet, you know I bought into the anti-helmet theme of being able to hear traffic & car horns, thats all bull so one might as well wear a helmet,if for no other reason than just to keep the bugs out of your teeth.
I remember watching this commercial as a kid and thinking that if you turned kernels of corn inside out, you'd have Sugar Pops. I tried. It didn't work. And Mom got mad at me...
in 1996 all the cereal companies kelloggs, quaker, etc. got together nd said moms wont buy our cereal if the word sugar is in it... so now they call it corn pops
We went from Sugar Pops to Corn Pops. The only problem is that Corn Pops has more sugar than corn in it. The product name ban on "sugar" was the start of PC (politically correct) practices on items headed for our kitchen pantries and refrigerators.
That's veteran cowboy star Rex Allen as the narrator here...in the '50s, "Wild Bill Hickok" {Guy Madison} and "Jingles" {Andy Devine} were featured on the box, because Kellogg's originally sponsored "WILD BILL HICKOK" in syndication...
why hasnt anyone posted the best pops cereal commercial of all time, its the one when that little animated guy was dancing in front of the screen. then at the end he hopped in that big crowd and they were jumpin up and down, i love that one but i cant find it anywhere.
@majorcana yes they did...just as sugar smacks, sugar corn flakes, and super sugar crisp. Now they don't use the word sugar, but sugar is still in it.
Kids actually played outside back then! i know we were gone from morning to night.
