  • what got me the best results (i7 2600, coolermaster hyper 612s) is maxe a x with the thermal compound. i was using the blob method like he was using.. but the method that i was used made my temps go from 60C to 55C (=

  • @basbas63 please note.. just a little x.. not a giant x...

  • The Cross method works the best not line or blob.

  • @Apple2134Gamer It really depends on the CPU. Many models of Xeon for example benefit more from the line method, the 6 core ones benefit more from the cross method as the cores are taking up more of the area beneath the heat spreader. Personally I spread it with a business card or something and clean any excess before putting the heatsink on. In the end a lot of it is personal preference, but sometimes a specific method for certain CPU's works better than others.

  • How can you possibly fuck up applying thermal compound? If you can butter toast, then this should work too. It's not rocket science.

  • someone used vodca on my CPU lol. to cheap for rubbing acholhol

  • It's been four years, I say re-film it :D lol

  • full hd

  • Nice instruction, particularly on spreading the thermal compound LOL.

  • Mentioning a few particularities re conductive/non-conductive compound, the importance of keeping AS5 away from the PCB for example, etc. would help.

  • Thanks..

  • this show is great :DD dont know why im laughing

  • like how he thumps up when he says intel - 4:00

  • I heard that you shouldn't remove the casing between the heatsink and the processor, but i don't know if it's true, if you do this be carefull so you don't mess your processor upp.

I heard it from some stores and intel, but i might have missunderstood.

  • @eligri123 stores just dont wanna tell you its safe because they dont want you to risk it. it doesnt hurt the cpu because 1. its locked in to the socket and 2. its just the heatsink, made of copper or whatever they are made of.

  • Does it have any video on the gpu

  • this was before Linus knew everything

  • Redo this bro, you seem like such a shy nerd here. We need some fucking piercings and shit up in this bitch. AND YOUR CAT.

  • You shouldnt just go from cleaning the CPU to directly cleaning the heatsink. Find a clean spot on the cloth for both parts.

  • Owes shit, I was just using Toilet paper to clean my CPU and the fan. But hopefully nothing got damaged.

  • Linus, I love your vids, but you need to specify that different percentages of isopropyl are fine, as this confuses many people. (70% vs 99% etc) As others have said, it's time for a remaster. ;-)

  • Will 40% isotropic alcohol work?

  • @PCtechamras just got to any store and get a 70%

  • Comment removed

  • The porn theme music did it for me

  • I've only got 70% isotropic will that work

  • @12me91 Since you're using some kinda slang for what you're talking about I don't understand, but if its alcohol, any kind of alcohol that can dissolve the residue is perfectly fine. As long as its alcohol.

  • @12me91 i do it with 70% cleaning alcohol as well. does the job perfectly. never had problems.

  • @heffron91 any Type of alcohol would do like Ethyl alcohol or isotropic only?

  • 240p...we meet again

  • Wow I put a larger blob and spread it evenly and very thin with an old credit card across the whole of the metal surface. I've got old PC's atleast 6-7 years old working perfectly and with very low temps with this method. My current pc's i5 is idling at 31 degrees using the spread method so it must work.

  • @TheHornyHomunculus sry to say but that method is really bad, and can cause a large amount of air bubbles, watch this to see how thermal paste spreads /watch?v=EyXLu1Ms-q4&feature=related As you can see spreading is the worst way of applying, the pea method spreads the perfect amount with no air bubbles :) your welcome

  • @xkyrulzx Yeah I realise now its "wrong" but like I said I've never had a problem or temperature issues doing it the credit card way.

  • filmed in VHS? wow look how old this was...this time around that 70s porn intro music actually fits =)

  • Less is better heat transfer? Wtf? More area with thin film is ideal.

  • @NCIXcom Linus sir, can I use 98,4% ethanol instead of isopropylic alcohol? The latter is pretty hard to find in Brazil while the earlier is used in home cleaning and is widely available.

Another question, can/should I do all this process without unplugging the mobo and removing it from the case? I would unplug only the PSU so I don't risk getting shocked. I'm not sure I can plug it all back up if I remove it, as my technician usually does that for me. Thanks for the great video!

  • @bennemann you don't need to unplug anything (actually the psu connected is a ground which is good), and yes ethanol is fine

  • @bennemann did you try going to a drug store isopropyl alcohol is used to clean wounds

  • Thanks man! A put too much on and I was getting 67C on prime on i7-920 stock speeds on a v8 cooler!

  • @ibrahims786 You probably used the spread bullshit other retards say to do lol

  • @ibrahims786 What did you get after you did it right?

  • seems like a show from the 80's..

  • @Syrix100 hahaha... indeed xD

  • @Syrix100 The 80s didn't come to Canada til like '93.

  • yeah,

    plain and simple

    honest

    funny

    me likes

  • Comment removed

  • so funny. love it

  • Linus was so nervous back then ;)

  • old school

  • That babestation music gets me all the time

  • i didnt have any thermal paste so i used petroleum jelly instead.....

  • @nbomb000

i heard wd-40 works too man

  • @Izziana yeah lol

  • I love 240p.

  • wtf on the intel cpu that wont do shit if the IHS is not COMPLETELY covered with paste. he did the line method too which is more than an uncooked grain of rice and it STILL didnt cover the IHS (integrated heat spreader), so imagine what the AMD IHS would look like. D'oh!

  • Glad to see someone doing this correctly. Although spreading it out with a card will work, your still most likely going to have air pockets and that's not good... especially if you plan to overclock. Not spreading the compound ensures you have a nice "air pocket free" fit. Thanks NCIX

  • @SmithTEK11111000100 you can twist the heatsink to get rid of the bubbles.

  • @jurassic512 your right a few quick twists will take care of this issue but if you apply it correctly so that the compound is spread as you tighten down the heatsink, there will be no need for this step. One of the first things I learned while getting A+ certified

  • @megaanshulgupta

    Loool

  • lol.. my old cpu was stuck to the heatsink.. and it came of together with the heat sink..

then I had to break it off the heatsink cuz it was so tight.. it did a backflip and landed on the top.. It still worked XD

  • 4:24 for intel installation!

  • Make a remastered version

  • This is the only gay guy i respect.

  • @SCCOOTTER16 he isn't gay....

  • @SCCOOTTER16 You live in the South.. don't you?

  • your videos have changed alot there alot better know your not as jolly in this video

  • Linus, do a remaster version.

  • @DazhFX it's the same now.

  • @DazhFX he did.

  • Nice explanations. Your video helped me a lot to built my new system. I was very stressed with the idea of putting the thermal paste myself. I was stressed before and while doing it, but everything went well. I took my time and it was successful. Advice from my experience: Don't put to much paste... do it clean and the heatsink will flat it. The video explains perfectly the amount to put on the processor. Do it slowly and it will be fine.

  • If you need to be told where to find your cpu, you have no reason to be trying to apply anything. Go learn pc basics first before you hurt yourself.

  • less is more, but that thermal compound didnt even cover the whole contact area, how will cpu cool down ???

  • NCIX is Canada's greatest contribution to tech society.

  • you have skipped all the process of applying thermal paste

  • this tutorial is shit, and he doesn´t even show how to spread the thermal compound.

  • @scatteredminded 2008, dude, In 2008 it was hard to explain things! Now this guy is awesome!

  • @scatteredminded When you install the heatsink, the pressure spread the thermal compound evenly on all the surface filling any imperfection between the cpu and the heatsink preventing oxygen from interfering with the thermal conductivity.

  • Microfiber cloth is very staticy cloth. Is dat wrong?

  • great advise about the 'less is more'. thanks!

  • I couldn't find where the processor on the mother board so I ordered 90 boxes of mx2 and covered my motherboard with it. I have reduced my temperatures by 15 degrees

  • There is so much confusion about a rice size, line, pea, etc. Also, with heat pipe grooves, multi-core cpu's...can you do a definitive guide that explains all this? It's 2011 and a lot of people have the i5/i7 cpu's with a cooler with copper pipes. I think there are a lot of incorrect info out there. Lastly, what is the preferred thermal paste?

  • Not sure if too much is bad or good, but my Xbox360 kept crashing until I re-paste it with just a pea size and did NOT spread it...and it has not crashed yet! Please clarify how to apply paste for a i5-2500k (quad core) cpu. I don't want to screw this up as it will be overclocked.

  • this method is completely wrong and nearly all the comments on this channel so far is wrong. put a globule the size of an xbox button in the center and dont spread it with an card. use decent non conductive thermal paste. dont waste your time with any other methods there all wrong. the size of an uncooked grain of rice! doing it that way it can go wrong my method is never wrong.

  • @LIVEREALFOOLED Bad troll.

  • @NwZ2 im not sure about about troll status, over scrimping thermal paste has been proven a fallacy. im not suggesting people start placing marble sizes on there CPU but if you use the amount suggested in the video all im saying is it can go wrong, and it could. people often say you dont need it on the sides only in the middle where the cores are which in my opinion is stupid and bad ethos since the sides heat up as well. less isnt more unless your using conductive thermal paste anyway.

  • Comment removed

  • hmm .. i always apply a little ball of compound the size of a grain of rice, and i rub it out with a wallet card to make sure it covers the entire cpu with a thin layer.

then i take some microfiber cloth, apply a tiny bit of paste on it and rub it over the surface of the heatsink. I'm not actually adding a layer there, just speading it out so that near to nothing is on it.

then i apply the heatsink to the CPU.

    Works better with 4-8 cores...

but yea this vid was made in 2008 =p

  • Instead of Thermal grease you can use man fat or fanny batter, depending on if you are male or female, both are free :)

the only downside is the cpu can smell a little afterwards

  • You don´t really need the alcohol (or nail polish remover or white spirit). It is used to remove grease, but your CPU and cooler are not greasy when they come from the factory and not handled by humans nor are they dirty. only if you touched the base of the CPU and heatsink and smudged sweaty fingers all over the surface then you could use some simple white spirit or nail polish remover (you need only a very small amount) to remove grease as grease IS an insulator.

  • 101 people couldn't *find their CPU*, despite Linus's guidance.

  • cool 80's muzik bro.

  • So you always take the heatsink off to check whether the paste is spread out well enough? Seems to me it is better to leave it there, cause if you take it off and put it back on again youll get airbubbles underneath...

  • @olaivo I think he was just showing the users how it should look.

  • @olaivo He did three changes there; the third one was jsut to show you what it looks like hwen applied properly (ie less is more).

  • "Rub it in a circular motion" that's what she said.

  • So, I couldn't find my cpu... I bought the alcohol and the MX-2, so i just squeezed the the whole tube of MX-2 into the alcohol, shook it up real good, then poured it SLOWLY all over the motherboard, I'm pretty sure I have covered the cpu since everything is covered in a greyish solution. temperatures are now 5~10 degrees lower.

  • @The1126jjk troll harder please.

  • @alexkwilliams by trolling, you mean bending your mother over and giving her what she deserves right? Well, if I 'trolled' any harder she would break. I know this because she said so, she said "if you troll any harder I'm going to break," at least that's what I think she said, she had her mouth full. and I wasn't the only one there. Poor Mrs. Williams

  • @The1126jjk You are terrible. Try harder next time, if you can.

  • @The1126jjk Cool story bro!

  • @The1126jjk funny guy

  • Um, did you spread it around or...?

  • All Motherboards are Virgins? What happened to Fartherboards

  • 97 people did this wrong

  • @DarkestEvolution They now are 104 in count......... Must've not followed the instructions... Too sad! :D

  • lol i skipped through the amd part haha!

  • Two straight (not gay) lines.

  • my old enemy, 240p!

  • @D00mbr0s my old enemy, a 240p comment!

  • not even 320p....

  • TRUST ME! You dont need that alchohol shit. A dry clean cloth or tissue will do the trick. I used a wet one and it didnt fuck up my heatsink.

  • what would i use for a Quad core

  • @JonasAndStuffDK95 thanks

  • tell me, why the cpu's have to have thermal compound? is this usefull for something?

  • @tugaxD23 if it wast there, it would burn

  • @JonasAndStuffDK95 oh ok thanks

  • @tugaxD23 It facilitates an increased heat transfer from the CPU to the heatsink. Heat is not efficiently transferred if you simply place the heatsink on the CPU.

The whole job of the heatsink is to draw heat from the CPU (heat is the enemy of electronic components). Thermal Compound allows the heatsink to draw heat from the CPU much more efficiently. Thermal Compound is cheap, no reason not to use it.

  • I put Arctic Silver 5 on top and on the bottom of my CPU and now it's 8C lower then with the paste just on top!

Also, if you open up a harddrive and take out the magnet it works faster because the magnet isn't slowing it down anymore

  • amd heatsink is so much better, installation is easier then the intel

  • this dood is totally Canadian!

  • @Mfoehrkolb21 No wonder he talk's so 'normal'. :P

    I'm from Canada too, :P

  • I think you forgot to turn the screws back by 90 degrees on your Intel heatsink. Nevertheless, a great tutorial, very detailed and helpful! Thanks!

  • No one should just open up there computer disconnect there CPU and replace the thermal compound. Most new computers, the CPU compound does not need to be replaced and if your computer is older then five years old it sucks. You only have to really learn this if your building a computer or your experience enough to upgrade your CPU on your motherboard. To all the NOOBs don't try this or you will have to give NCIX around 1000 dollars for a new computer.

  • Wouldn't you want enough thermal compound to cover the cpu & the heatsink leaving no area in between the two uncovered???? Yes I agree less is better than more but only if you put just enough on in the 1st place.

  • Thank you so much for the tip on Less is more cause i was about to go applying alot like someone else once told me.....Very helpful

  • 240p we meet again

  • "today we'll be covering, INSTALLING THERMAL COMPOUND"

  • G @Cpillin425 I think I had that problem on a old laptop I think a HP zv5000 I remember that I puled out the heatsink with the entier cpu, I never was able to remove it from the heatsink it looked like it was glued so I put it again in the soket with the entier heatsink & evrething worked ok.

  • @KEEVVY thank you I'll try this.

  • So uhhh... what if the heatsink is stuck to the processor with the heat paste? lol

  • @Cpillin425 You turn on your computer for a few minutes so the cpu heats up. Once it's warm. turn the computer back off and try again. Once the paste is warm it's easier to get off.

  • Informative, however, why don't you have the camera at an angle so that we can SEE the computer parts instead of just you?

  • I am a Noob and didn't know that you needed a different heat sink for an AMD and Intel. I just bought a AMD motherboard and a Intel heat sink.

  • @oxman0313 LOLOLOLOLOLOL

  • @oxman0313 *Facepalm*

  • @Zacccc51 ya i know. it's my first build

  • we can build crazy fast computers but never agree on how to apply thermal past

  • then i did it for a 3rd time and this time i noticed the previous times i was not installing the heatsink fan holder properly... so it was not making contact... and that can fry my cpu in less than 10 secs... this last time it worked.. my quad core I5 is intact.. at least that is what i think.. any way to check the performance of each core? computer working normally temp is now around 10 degress less

  • @allsic Try Prime95

  • you just dropped some of thermal compund on it.. but never spread it ivenly to cover all the CPU.. do you think is not needed?

  • @allsic If you cover the CPU in thermal compound you may cause air bubbles to form. A single blob or line with thermal compound will actually push any air out of it as the fans spread it outwards.

  • @Glisern Hi Glisern, I had a terrible time when chaning the thermal compund... i did cleaned the cpu and heat sink and added the new artic 5, turned on my computer and it didnt boot... i turned off inmmediately thinking the work just happened... then cleaned again and installed everything.. the same happened... i thought my CPU was fried already...

  • thermal paste may be last a year but to use toothpaste "wow" good job u shine the processor teeth lol......

  • i recommend CDrking thermal compound

  • hmmm..... no damages for CPU?? hmm sorry for my english eheheh

  • I actually didnt apply any thermal paste on my cpu, I dont really remember too if there was some on the stock fan...should i be worried? i bought the new a8-3850

  • @heavyarms39 Your stock heat sink probably had some paste on it, you should be ok. If your heatsink didn't come with a tube of thermal paste then it was probably pre-applied.

  • @hhslf thanks for replying, I am worried though because my temps reach to 55 degrees celcius in the BIOS at start up and my computer freezes while watching videos from time to time

  • Anyone know what sort of Themal Paste is the best?

  • @Ingendet Arctic Cooling MX-4. It's better than artic silver 5

    /ncix.com/products/?sku=55958&vpn=MX-4T-4G&manufacture=Arctic%20Cooling

  • @JTK699 Oh thank you.

  • can you take the heatsink out and look like he did with the intel mobo? does it leave air bubble or anything ?

  • great video

  • I use alcohol cleaner, but why cant you just wipe it off with tissue paper? Just wondering.

  • How drunk would you get if you drank that 99% Isopropyl shit? I think the real question is, how long would it take for you to die..lol
