tbland82 you are correct but what you fail to realize is the Robert MC is a converted single screw navy tug. the V hull is not friendly to working indirect.
Spill the meatloaf, cheesey pototoes, green been casserole, fresh bread, or my beer and yer gonna toss yer own lines ya hacks. If any of you pilot house new borns "Spit up" on the wheelhouse console you will clean it yourself. Don't spill the meal.
Not an entirely correct "power indirect", but pretty close. The tug needs twice the line out to keep the drives away from the wash of the ship. Keep the tug perpendicular to the centerline of the ship as much as possible as you increase power. The second tug on the starboard quarter is completely unnecessary if this maneuver is done correctly. Before anyone asks...yes I know what I am talking about & yes I operate one of these boats for a living.
Probably using "Powered" indirect, but I do not know why the other tugs are there. If the ship was doing below 3 knots then the indirect is pretty much not effective.

If this method works so good why was there a boat on the star stern?
Cusjus 4 years ago
Probably as a security reason.Otherwise this method works good since the tug is acting as rudder.Maybe the speed of the ship wasnt big enough.
bobrok77 4 years ago
We are doing indirect method on the bow while ship is leaving port astern. And normally when ships speed is over 3 kts.
The stern tug is ADS and the bow tug is VSP.
