@amadaria People find it tacky in the US because what he is wearing is from a different culture than ours. To us (well, not me specifically), thats a "martial arts uniform", but to them, thats their traditional clothing. I regard it more as traditional clothing than a uniform personally, but I still wouldnt wear it casually here in the US :). But for a performance like this guy, I think it would ok. I have no idea what the song is about, but im guessing samurai related due to the outfit.

Naginata wasn't used all that often by the samurai, being primarily a 'woman's weapon' believe it or not. They did use the o-naginata, which is similar but twice the length. The primary battlefield weapon of foot-soldiers was the spear or 'yari' and the original samurai weapon was the bow, traditionally on horseback. The sword was considered the 'soul' of the samurai, even referred to jokingly as a Samurai's 'wife'

there were schools for spear fighting and the spear was the main weapon of the battlefield for foot and mounted troops in the 16th Century whereas in previous centuries it had been the bow for mounted samurai.

As for guns, ashigaru foot soldiers primarily used them but by the mid to late 16th century were more professional soldiers eventually becoming lower rank samurai.

Daimyo (samurai warlords) had no qualms in using them in battle.
