Olympic Village did cost 1.2 billion, but the units go for sale after the Olympics and unless the housing prices in Vancouver drop (extremely unlikely) , this money will all be covered by this sale.
This is why infrastructure costs are usually not quoted in Olympic price tags as they are not single use items and are around for several decades for use.

"Why pay for Games when there are Canadian poor in the streets?" is an important point to be made. The reality of the Marco economics is such that, the poor well remain poor whether the games are in Vancouver or not. It is too bad these same good hearted people didn't put their resources together to approach this in a way to which instead of Fighting with the Games and sponsors, they worked together to help both sides win with a positive message.
Whatever the increased security cost, it is increased by these same protesters that want the money to go elsewhere.

Furthermore these projects will be in use for several decades and not just for 2 weeks see Summary of Intermediate Capacity Transit System Studies, 10 year Development Plan 1995-2006, BC Transit, Stephen Gardner and Glen Leicester, March 1995.
This is the exact reason why most Olympic cities do not count these type of projects in spending.
Carrying on - there is the Olympic Village at 1.2 Billion and indeed was built for the games. However most units and commercial space go up for sale afterwards and assuming Vancouver maintains its real estate prices, we should be able to pull in a bit of profit - for sure break even. If prices go down there is a chance there could be a loss. If prices go down, we are talking about a loss of 50-100 million and not a total loss as that would involve given the Condos away for free
So that leaves us Security which again cost are related to the games. But keep in mind the 900 million figure factors in salary of the RCMP and Military. It is not fair to include this as they would have been paid anyways as they would have been at their regular jobs and hopefully not working for free. So really that leaves with us less than 1.5 billion to cover. Ticket sales and sponsor funds alone cover this and then some.

Actually it is 6 billion and the Canada Line, Convention Centre, and Whistler Hwy were going to be built regardless of the Olympics. Olympic Village did cost 1.2 billion, but the units go for sale after the Olympics and unless the housing prices in Vancouver drop (extremely unlikely) , this money will all be covered by this sale.
This is why infrastructure costs are usually not quoted in Olympic price tags as they are not single use items and are around for several decades for use.

Lets say we do spend the 6 billion on social issues. One would have to be an idiot to not think when one string gets pulled another one won't be affected. The workers who were counting on the jobs generated are now out of work and/or underemployed. These people either move on to lower areas of employment, move out of province, or become dependent on social assistance. Hence to better one group you are making another group suffer.

It can be said that revenue can be caught back from the people who are working in the new social programs. True, but not nearly to the same extent as there is no sales or tourist revenue. Furthermore the people being services are dependents on the state. Furthermore the 6 billion costs does not stop there as yearly operating costs and debt servicing.

Also, protesting an event that potentially causes loss of profit for a province, by disrupting the flow of income to that event is beyond counterproductive.

I believe many of the points of protest such as,
"Why pay for Games when there are Canadian poor in the streets?" is an important point to be made. The reality of the Marco economics is such that, the poor well remain poor whether the games are in Vancouver or not. It is too bad these same good hearted people didn't put their resources together to approach this in a way to which instead of Fighting with the Games and sponsors, they worked together to help both sides win with a positive message.

Furthermore these projects will be in use for several decades and not just for 2 weeks see Summary of Intermediate Capacity Transit System Studies, 10 year Development Plan 1995-2006, BC Transit, Stephen Gardner and Glen Leicester, March 1995.
This is the exact reason why most Olympic cities do not count these type of projects in spending.

Carrying on - there is the Olympic Village at 1.2 Billion and indeed was built for the games. However most units and commercial space go up for sale afterwards and assuming Vancouver maintains its real estate prices, we should be able to pull in a bit of profit - for sure break even. If prices go down there is a chance there could be a loss. If prices go down, we are talking about a loss of 50-100 million and not a total loss as that would involve given the Condos away for free

So that leaves us Security which again cost are related to the games. But keep in mind the 900 million figure factors in salary of the RCMP and Military. It is not fair to include this as they would have been paid anyways as they would have been at their regular jobs and hopefully not working for free. So really that leaves with us less than 1.5 billion to cover. Ticket sales and sponsor funds alone cover this and then some.
