Yes, I think they may have forced to convert to Islam. I remember, our great criketer Kapil Dave went to Pakistan to find his uncle, he was concluded that he was converted to ISlamn after Partition and was not able to find due to the name change.

Infact, all the Muslims living in the Indian sub-continent are converted to Islam. They are all Hindus in reality.

They did not decide to stay, they were may be afraid to say anything or converted to Islam. In thos days, during the Partition days, murder and killing was wide spred. If history is correct, also more 15million migrated across the boder and it was the lagest mogration ever recorded in human history. It was horrable. Most hard hit was punjab and not Gujarat. Gujarat was licky because Sardar Patel, trherwise part of it(Junagadh) would have gone to Pakistan.
