The reason why Criminal Minds keeps dropping and adding characters is because its a clever way to ensure the survival of the show.

Even early on, when they dropped Gideon and Elle, this was so that there is constant change and upheaval. If it wasn't almost constant, if they did what most shows do and only drop a major character after many, many season, the show would run the risk of 'jumping the shark', as it were.

Lola Gluadini and Mandy Patinkin both chose to leave the show on their own in the early going (Glaudini wanted to move back to NYC, and Patinkin has always been too restless to stay with a show for any significant amount of time). AJ was unceremoniously dumped. They can claim it's for "creative reasons" but a lot of folks (including several on the show) view that statement as, "we want to bring in someone cheaper."
