for anyone who didn't know, this movement was written for Clara Schumann (Brahms was in love with her for most of his life, but could never have her), and Rubinstein learned this work when he was twelve. As this performance is near the end of his life, I think it's really beautiful to see this as a reflection of almost eighty years of studying this piece. Sort of like a statement about where he came in his life.
Rubinstein knows exactly what he is doing.there aint a climax that early2:40. first appearances of motives cant be all out.u need a class in interpretation dude.
How could any 25-year-old write such an Adagio? It really is amazing that Brahms did so when he was so young. It shows a mastery and maturity far beyond that of a callow youth. It is truly amazing...and I never cease to find it absolutely outstanding.
@50AGH If the legend is true that Brahms as a child was forced to play piano in Hamburg brothels, then there you may have a well of sadness from which to draw.
This movement is truly one of the most beautiful moments of piano literature. Particularly love the climax at 2:40, to which I'm afraid Rubinstein doesn't really do justice in this recording...
well,if the tone and vid does not match, what am i to say?, should i say,it does match? what the fuck r u talking about?the tone and pic does not fit together, whether you like it or not....
this is a beatifull mov...I have a recording of this with lazar berman-he plays better than this old rubinstein.this interpreatation is too dry for me.
more than magic. see and hear yourself at the piano and dream away thank you maestro Rubinstein

wonderful!
Thank you for this video.
Although, in my opinion, the best performance of this concert is the one with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Fritz Reiner (1954).

@MrDam1973 It is well known that Rubinstein himself didi't like that recording.

What a synchronism ! We can't enjoy such ensemble today !! A Beethoven tune is so much stressful; harder for modern musician !!
