It's not that simple. IMHO, you are selling the art of off-spin short. Also let's not forget that finger-spinners, wrist-spinners and knuckle-spinners (carrom-bowlers like Mendis) are vastly different types of the off-spinners. It's a very broad umbrella, if you ask me, and I wouldn't compare it to something as specific as leg-spin. Both are great arts, in their own right.

@Imrankniazi i agree with you about both arts being great. unfortunately, the art of spin bowling as a whole has been disarmed into an ugly, defensive art by captains and coaches. the only hope right now is swann, whose flair and agresiveness has captivated me. my opinion however, is that off-spin bowling, whatever branch of it may be, is much easier to grasp than leg spin bowling. as you said, leg spin is a specific art. it requires a special knack. no such knack is needed to bowl off spin.

@RoheeeeCricket That's a fair assessment. Leg-spin is a more elusive art. A lot of blokes I know can turn the leg-spinner well, but getting good drift (with sufficient revs), zip and bounce off the pitch is rather rare. When someone can do it with Warnesque control, that is mind-boggling.

I am also not so sure if the wrist-spinning off-spinner or the carrom-ball is that easy to spot. Lance Gibbs had one that he used to bowl with one finger over the seam and it used to jump up awkwardly!

@Imrankniazi and thats why warne was so damn good, that drift into the right hander then the sharp spin away. that bite he got from the surface. its true, there are people who can rip a leggie, but to be consistent is very difficult. there are a few like that at my club. as i said, it requires a knack. you can bowl one great delivery, but it's usually a fluke until proven otherwise. you're right, it's difficult for batsman to pick it up. thats why those variation should be used sparingly.

In Test Cricket Murali has better Average, Strike rate, Economy rate, Best bowling per Innings (BBI), BBM.

Murali has taken more wickets, more 5 fors & 10 fors than warne after playing less number of matches.

In ODIs Murali's record is again better than Warne in all above bowling catogories by a mile.

So Y on earth people even considering Warne is as good or better than Murali???
