Protection from what? Gays? lol. Is there a secret hidden ban on straight marriage that activates when gay marriage is passed into law. Don't see anyone wanting to ban divorce, which is the only real threat to marriage.
I agree with President Bush that "[m]arriage cannot be severed from its cultural, religious and natural roots...." But I'm puzzled at how following this assumption leads to his advocating the exclusion of gay marriage, especally given the very messy, and often muddled, history of marriage. For example, polygamy is no longer universally accepted, but it was as as culturally embedded (arguably, more so) as any other institution. Bush has it right in one sense, but he has it wrong in the others.

If the Civil Rights Act had been put to a vote of the people it would not have passed.
Constitutions exist to provide and protect, not discriminate.
