  • @DrGolfJam you can get in the Ball Park by swapping out the modern hardware for vintage. On a Mexi Standard, it matches up pretty easily, the holes for the bridge are the same as the Ashtray, and you can get adapter bushings to put Kluson tuners on. Add a set of Fender original vintage pups, and enjoy. Swapping the Marshall for a Fender Tube amp will help tremendously also. I Vintage modded my Mex, and play it thru a Champion 600, with a Boss '63 Fender reverb pedal, it's an awesome econo Rig!

  • Actually, it was Bobby Womack & Reggie Young on guitars on "I'm in Love', not Steve Cropper... Bobby Womack played the line you were trying to play in this clip.

    Nice sounding Tele!

  • Cool... not nearly as cool as a Butterscotch Blonde 1952 Reissue Tele, but cool nonetheless.

  • @Hoopermazing A 1960 Tele isn't as cool as a reissue???

  • @slpplexi1969 Not when it has a sunburst finish and a rosewood fingerboard, and the reissue is rocking buterscotch blond and maple! Plus, the '52 reissue has a massive U shaped baseball bat of a neck... which I dig the most.

  • @Hoopermazing I care more about the sound than the looks. Rosewood or maple doesn't matter much. They feel a little different, but not much because you shouldn't be touching the fretboard much.

  • @slpplexi1969 I disagree. On the same guitar, a rosewood neck sounds noticeably dark to my ears. Also, I don't care for either the looks, the feel or the maintenance required to keep a rosewood fingerboard in good condition. For that matter, I don't care for sunburst Teles at all. So, this just isn't for me on any front.

  • Ive got a just a mexican standard tele and a little marshall amp. I know it could never get it to sound just like that but any tips on how to get close?

  • this is intro song ?

  • I think this man is cool... he plays a tele.

  • This is from a Fender made video and he was hired to talk about and demonstrate classic Fender instruments. Both of which he does a great job.

  • The song Jim is playing in the beginning is King Curtis' Memphis Soul Stew. The guitarist was Reggie Young. The Wilson Pickett song I'm In Love wasn't in fact Steve Cropper. The guitarist on the original recording was (surprise) also Reggie Young!

  • Good to here the props for S. Cropper. Loved 'The Band' in the day too.

  • gosh i wish i could afford a tele

  • @gome5000 look at the sx from rondo. $109 and sounds great. not as good as a fender of course but sounds great all the same.

  • hey...does someone know what he's playin' around 5.34...?

  • @ArkadianDream The tune is "I´m in Love" from Wilson Pickett and i think it´s Steve Cropper on guitar

  • i want a telecaster (ANDY SUMMER LOOK) but it cosths 1000 euros here in europe

  • @badguitarp yeah an america one does ..

but i got a made in korea one with a seymour duncan bridge pickup and a texas special neck pickup for 400€

sounds better than an american standard.

review with a new amp to come soon.

  • I think it was Bobby Womack not Steve Cropper... Anyone have Tab of I'm in Love?

  • Steve Cropper played on the version with WIlson Pickett. That's the version he's playing here. No clue on who recorded the song first, though...

  • He is MASTER of TELECASTER!!

  • roy buchanan. your opinion will change. he is the true master of the tele

  • Albert Collins was no slouch on the Tele as well...

  • Steve Cropper is much more versatile then Roy Buchanan.

  • Check out Danny Gatton too -

  • @Creepycottages ...Danny Gatton is great

  • For me the Tele is a musician's guitar, a songwriter's guitar; the fact that it sounds so great is a bonus.

  • What is a good replacement speaker for a Fender Harvard?

  • Weber 10A100T, 8 ohm, no dope on the surround.

  • Check out Weber speakers. I put one in a vintage champ and it sounds super rad!

  • that guitar is a dream

  • Hey does anyone know where i can get tabs for that song "Im in Love" that he plays? or even know if there is a full version of the song on youtube?

  • can't add links to comments? bs.

  • oops..it's Wilson Picket on the 45...

  • come down girls....

  • The beginning is Memphis Soul Stew .

  • that's with Booker T isn't it? need to hear green onions again :D

  • King Curtis....I have the 45 with it somewhere . :)

  • Hey, man that's "my" baby!

With a 0.13 strings gauge trought some Super Reverb o Twin Reverb it's a real killer for slidin' blues. Actually you can get not just Muddy's sound but as well David Gilmore's and many others. Like late master Roy Buchanan said, "the Telly it's harder to play than other models, but it's a guitar that you can feel it's ALIVE". ♥

  • WORD on the .013 gauge! Those strings sound like nylon!

  • Not a big fan of rosewood, but the body looks nice.

  • @ 5:22 - love it!

  • me too...

  • do you know what is the song he plays in the begining and later in the middle. those muted chords?

  • no, but check out "She caught the Katy" from the blues brothers soundtrack. Cropper plays in a similar way and it's a kickass song by an amazing group of musicians.

  • Outstanding video. Weider is a exceptionally tasteful guitarist, and seems like a down-to-earth guy. No pretension.

And man, do I love that Telecaster.

  • i love that tele honk!!!!!

  • i don't think he is a tool.

  • actually this guy is a very accomplished musician with his own signature amp head out so do a little research before making such an arrogant remark.

  • @thefew You don't know 'who this guy is' ... ha ha. Talk about having 'no idea what you're talking about' ...........

  • i love my tele wouldnt trade i for any other guitar cept maybe a vintage esquire

  • well i must say I´m impressed you are a talented guy. HAHA believe me if some time you have enough skills to play a tele you´ll realize they have guts as the LP´s and they sound even better compare to a strat the strat sound is more compressed with more mids, teles are just as good as strats and the LP´s. About the talentremoving part I´ll just add that it won´t take away any of your talents but it´s way more difficult that nobody realizes if you screwed it up because of its sound

  • yeah your right, since they are so basic, it is harder to make it sound good, but if you really know what you doing they can be one of the best axes around. plus, there is no way to fake the tele sound, you can slap a few humbuckers and a load of knobs on anything and get pretty close to a lp sound, but the only way to get a real tele sound is through a real tele.

  • not exactly. first of teles sound amazing, and simplicity is often better. also i can get tele sounds with my strat but its not a normal fender

  • the bridge pickupof a strat kind of sounds somewhat like a tele, but if your ear is really keen to a tele, the only thing that sounds like one, is one. but i do agree with the simplicity being better, its just that a lot of more modern amatuer guitar players dont know what to do when they pick one up, but if you know how to tame the beast the sound is better than any (in my opinion)

  • Hey my tele doesn't sound like that! It's not vintage, I don't have that amp and I don't have the technique or know how!

  • Telecasters are the best guitars ever built.

  • i've been listening to some of these tele's and i think strat is they way to go

  • eric clapton is a strat guy!!

  • yeah, but he played a tele while with the yardbirds

  • Well, I'm convinced by your erudite argument A7XBIGBIGFAN45. Now all we have to do is win over Jeff Beck, Mike Bloomfield, Eric Clapton, Albert Collins, George Harrison, Andy Summers, Jonny Greenwood, Johhny Marr and all those other musicians who used - and still use - a Telecaster at some point in their careers.

Let's start with the talent-removing part. What were they thinking? I wonder how good that Stairway to Heaven solo would have been if Jimmy Page had used a good guitar?

  • plus jimmy page did all of led zep I on a tele, and he recruited it several more times throughout his carrer other than stairway. (hot dog, all of my love, ect.)

  • @gabalabachoyVI He did use it on Stairway to Heaven. That's what he was playing for the solo.

  • I think what you wanted to say is... "I'm not skilled enough to get a sound as great as that out of a telecaster." but good look with that jealousy

  • this is the the best sounding tele/esquire...!!

  • damn this guy is good :-). I'm learning so mutch from him :-). itis the style I want to play. Does anybody has some advise on where to look on the internet to learn this kind of music?

  • steve cropper the guy said

  • HOT !! 5 stars

  • very nice seems tense the player but he pulled it off

  • I like this guy. He loves his Teles, thats for sure. U can tell he's slightly awkward/nervous but seems to know his stuff!

  • i like the way this telecaster sounds but i hate rosewood necks.

  • i'm gettin' ready to have a tele put together for me and i'm not sure about which way to go on the fretboard and it sounds like you have a definite opinion about it. Could you shed some light on why you don't like the rosewood? I've heard different things about sound/feel and some people put one or the other on their tele's just for looks. Your opinion would be most appreciated-thanks.

  • check out the warmoth website warmoth*com/guitar/necks/necks*cfm?fuseaction=guitar_neckwoods)

*replace the asterisks with dots of course

they give a decent run down of the sound you get with certain neck woods.

I mulled over the same question for several weeks and eventually settled on pau ferro which tonally is towards the maple end of the spectrum (bright) but looks more like rosewood. If you have the money you could make a tonal compromise and go for Brazilian rosewood (mid spectrum).

  • Thanks capsomere, that is a great site-lots of info. It seems that you like the brighter end of the tone spectrum and i guess since we're talkin' about fenders-teles in particular, i definitely see your reasoning. Cheers mate!!!

  • well, it's not that I necessarily prefer bright tone, but I look at it this way, I can always warm my sound up, add more mids or what have you without really introducing a great deal of noise into the mix, but if I have to add highs, I feel like the expansion of noise (hiss) grows logarithmically with each small amount of brightness rendered. In other words, I'd rather subtract frequency than add it. That may just be due to my setup, I mean after all I do play through of a 500w bass head/amp.

  • buzz rosewood rulez :D no every body must be allowed to have his or her's own oppinion

  • I certainly wouldn't put anything but rosewood on a bass...

  • actually i used to say the same thing myself, but then i met my true love, the 1951 fender p-bass, which has a maple neck. i always use flats with the tone all the way off. it sounds extremely mellow, with plenty of bass to fill in the low end and make your pant legs flap, but the maple give the notes a very percise and natural tone. i'll never buy another bass.

  • Yes, perhaps with a p-bass that is the way to go...I'm more of a j-bass player so I'm all about the rosewood. I haven't played a p-bass in at least 10 years, but I think once I get the money together I'll give the p-bass another try and I'll make sure it has a maple (or pau ferro) neck. It's been years, and my equipment is totally different from what I had when I first started so you never know.

  • now that i see your a j-bassman, i see your point. i would never put anything other than rosewood on a jazz, but the p and the j are completely different animals, and my '51 is more like a big telecaster than a p, but its all reletive.

  • mmmmmmmm '51

  • i know, ive had for about a year, and i still like to just sit and look at it.

  • i also like maples more on teles

  • i also like maples more on teles

  • Musta been drunk.........

  • fuck, that's what i'm looking for... and i've already found... but it's 3800 euros :-(

wow, wow, wow... you are very lucky!

  • Why did you put a pickup in THAT!This guitar was worth money whithout then pickup!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Try watching the video before saying stupid things. It's still worth plenty of money. The guitars came from the FACTORY that way. Everything he did is reversible.

  • From the factory with the routing I mean. He either bought a new pickguard or modified the existing one, and added the 2nd pickup. In less than an hour it could all be back to original specs.

  • What song does he play in 5:20?

  • It's called "Im in love" - By Steve Croper

  • Thx for the video.

Awesome tone ! This is the one i'm looking for !!

Does someone know what are the pickups ?

  • the pickups are stock. there were no differents pickups to choose from in the 1960's.

  • Thank you for the response. I guess the Tweed Harvard is hard to find or expensive.

Do you know an fender amp which sounds similar for clean tone ?

  • Thank you for the response. I guess the Tweed Harvard is hard to find or expensive.

Do you know an fender amp which sounds similar for clean tone ?

  • Any of the smaller tweed amps will sound very similar.

  • man that guys good

  • good sound

  • it looks freaking beautiful!

  • Jim Weider

  • Who is this guy?

  • The analog video becomes not able to be seen and I want to see the scene of Susie Q.

Isn't it possible to request this place?

  • is that the same sort of guitar John Frusciante uses? When he uses a tele that is

  • SO GREAT

  • What a wonderful axe.

  • The Wilson Pickett record "I'm In Love" was recorded in Alabama at Muscle Sholes. I don't think Cropper played that riff... beautiful riff nontheless

  • those first two riffs were sooooooooo shit!

  • IMHO it's not point in riffs, but in sound. He knows why he choosed to play that particular riff. Not every Tele will produce that sound. It has to do with alder wood, rosewood freetboard, vintage bridge and aluminium saddles. I would give my two Teles and ten more for this Tele, just because of that first riff.

  • i wish they would put that binding on all the teles. binding makes any guitar look good

  • is this Sesame Street

  • where can i get that "im in love" song that he did. steve cropper is legit.

  • this is sweet man

  • ay q ver como le gusta a la gente fardar eee

  • Very Nice!

  • can any1 get me a tab to memphis soul stew

  • Thats Jim Weider. Great stuff. And I believe the custom Telecaster first came out in 1959. I think. Definetly earlier than '62 anyway.

  • Is that dimone, from fast times at ridgemont?

    Nice playin dimone.

  • God I love bound Teles....

  • me too, i've got a mexican one, unfortuneately its got no binding 8(

  • he seems like a pretty nice guy. i've had his video (VHS) for years. ok guitar player. obsessed with "gear". and a total dork. sorry, but i can't stand these anal retentive guitarist types.

  • I think custom telecaster came out in 1962 but i can be wrong.

    Bye.

  • I love that first lick...Can anyone name it...or is it improvisation?

  • memphis soul stew by king curtis

  • Cornell Dupree played that lick with King Curtis on Live at Fillmore West

  • Great lick! Hendrix also used to perform this style of licks. The exemples are "Castles Made of Sand" performed in "G" and "Little Wing" performed in "Em". Good stuff, insn't it?

  • Argh, Texas Special pickups are the worst. Gawd those things sound bad. If you want an overwound pickup, you can't go wrong with VanZandt Blues models, they blow the Texas Specials into the weeds. If you want a more vintage sound, the CS Fat 50s are great.

  • yeah fucking heavy

  • Excellent demo and great Cropper licks!

  • get yourself a japanese 1960's custom tele, exactly the same, except its got texas special pickups, some argue jap fenders are better quality at the moment.

  • I´ve never played any of thoose original 60´s Tele´s but i´ve got a jap custom tele and it´s really really great, I highly recommend it!

  • yes they certainly are better at the moment and infact for as long as i can remeber jap strats and teles are extremely well crafted instruments for much less then the american equivilent

  • you must be joking!!!

  • nope

  • im not so sure about the jap guitars better than american ones... but i can guarantee that the price- quality ratio of jap guitars are much better than the american ones... some american ones are overpriced cuz they're american...

  • Its really CooL!!!

  • awesome

  • the fist part is a jam ?

  • if you compare a 50's maple neck to the '59 rosewood slab not taking the pu's into account, the rosewood has a darker tone while the maple is brighter and edgier

  • how is this guy ?

  • daddy like!

cant get enough of that tele twang and its sweet sweet front pickup tone!

god i want a telecaster custom!

  • Thanks for posting -loved the Cropper stuff - most tastiest guitarist ever to wield a tele IMHO. Nice gear too. Its a damn shame working musicians can't afford that stuff anymore - Thank god for companies like Victoria Amp Co.
