Sometimes people don't like songs they have had a part in because of memories associated with them, rather than having a dislike of the result of the music that was actually produced.
Today is a sad day. After hearing Chronic Town and buying Murmur 28 years ago when i was a senior in HS, it feels like someone has passed away. I try and think of my favorite song and i can't. Or if i did it would change five minues from now. Its silly to say they were the best but i do know the music has been part of my life for over 28 years. I can't think if anything i've ever liked or needed that long. Thanks guys, you came along at a time when i needed you and you'll always be here
@Thegrandwazoo23 That short segment of music is only found on the LP (vinyl) version of the album. I used to have access to the LP when I did college radio. It was there. Now I own the UK version of the CD, and while it contains some cool "B" side tracks, it does not have that segment of music. I would submit that the only place you're going to hear that short segment is on YouTube. Unless you have one of the original vinyl LPs. Anyway... good ear!! :-)
this is one of my top 10 favorite rem songs. i love the video for the fact that it just has a down-home, grainy look that captures the true exotic world of the south.
I have great memories of the early to mid-80s and listening to R.E.M. I totally absorbed Murmur, Reckoning, and Fables. By the time, Life's Rich Pageant, Document, and Green came out, I lost a bit of interest. In my mind, they commercialized their music and lyrics (just enough that their mythological quality was tarnished for me). I did not even listen to Out of Time that much. Then, they won be over again with Automatic for the People in 1992.
Actually, this video, and all of Left of Reckoning was NOT made at Finsters. It was made at the windmill man of Rabbit town's place in Rabbit Town, GA. I know because I live 20 minutes from Rabbit Town, and this was the windmill man's place. Windmill man was not like Finster. He was much more primitive in his Baptist belief, and not commercial. I owned a few of his windmills, which you could buy from him back then for $10.
@snpolit My daughter is named for that song. I sang it to her on the way back from the hospital. There just wasnt a song of theirs from Chronic Town to Fables that I do not still love. In the REM canon of works, they are the Giants that the rest of their albums have stood on. Document was good, but the Warner Influence was starting to show. It and Green were still better than what was out there at the time. I think Monster had flashes of the Golden Age in a good way, but their new stuff is ehh
These are all scenes around Rev Howard Finster's place. That makes it funnie by itself. Also....Its not terrribly sad, its more about resignation to how things are, rather than how we wish them to be.
@Christiantodd1 He was, while alive one of the more obscure, but widely loved primitive artist in the Artist community. Friendly, delightful humor, and he just made art from everything he saw, as you can tell if you look around the video. He designed the cover for Reckoning, and the Talking Heads album, Little Creatures. I say funny, because an an Art History Professor, I so enjoy primitive art and the stories of what propelled them into such a huge amount of works. Howard happens to be a fave.
@painxtreme Thats very interesting. I love the album artwork for Reckoning. I was always very intrigued by the Left of Reckoning video and where it was filmed. Thanks for the info.
@RITFWKen My Youngest is AnnElise for the same reason, but with a really involved story of how it came about. Msg me if interested, but I think It would be lost on the masses, so I'll not post the story here
i remember reading an article in which stephen malkmus said this was the one song he didn't like off of Reckoning. i was a bit shocked. i always thought of this song as an album highlight. completely entrancing, majestic and dream-like.
@jumblequeen Malkmus actually said that exact thing in a song, "Unseen Power of the Picket Fence," it's on the Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain reissue. "Time After Time was my least favorite song"
@toddpinkstonisgod, coming from a guy who enjoys Pavement, I say fuck Stephen Malkmus and his holier-than-thou indie music proclamations. He is a caricature of himself at this point.
Enjoy it, hate it, analyze it, ignore it; at the end of the day, R.E.M. and Stipe's music is a reflection of YOU, the listener, nothing more, nothing less.
If you cannot handle that responsibility, go listen to fucking Bon Jovi and leave us alone.
@frankc32 Why the hate? Bon Jovi, huh? I didn't say anything bad at all about R.E.M., if that's what you thought...I like R.E.M. I just mentioned Pavement's name-check of this song...nothing more, nothing less. I like Pavement and R.E.M., is something wrong with that?
@toddpinkstonisgod, seriously, there is enough friction and static in our world: those of us who recognize good music need to unite and share, not divide!
your right interpol. that was a great fucking album. suggestion: purchase the 24 kt gold disc mfsl version of reckoning and listen to it on a high-end stereo system, and then youll be all set.
@JoieV Actually, that song never even made it to the second vinyl pressing of Reckoning which is too bad because I really liked it. I know that there was a lot of conflict between the two producers and the band concerning the choice of songs for the record. Some of which dated as far back as 1980. Cool song, very spacey and atmospheric.
i have document bonus uk edition, and it has a live peformance of time after time. seriously beautiful, so much slower, and then with a slower more morose, so. central rain added on at the end! i recommend document bonus uk edition, to those who dont have it.
