@cntwejstprtnd I'm actually taking the highest ASL class at school and know a lot of people in the interpreting program. Some have been interpreting for many years and are still nowhere near as good as that. But i understand some click.. and marlee and her interpreter definitely click! :)
Yep. Sometimes if you lost our hearing as a child, you have even a little hearing in one ear the way Marlee does you might be able to pick up spoken language. So while it's not always very clear Marlee herself can and does speak. I've known quite a few folks like that. You can hear her talk in the SVU episodes she guest stars in.
Oh my gosh! She's sooo pretty! She's my favorite celebrity. I would do ANYTHING just to meet her. She's an inspiration to me in many different ways. She's smart and beautiful too. I hope she stars in more shows that I'm actually allowed to watch... I'm only 12 :( I hope one day I can meet you Marlee!
well i don´t wanna berude but that´s common knowledge that you look at the one who´s signing and not the interpretor. so funny when the interviewer constantly looks at the intepretor in the beginning. someone problaly sent her the message to look at marlee and not the interpretor.
@hammie1989 you're right, i could see she was looking at jack, but i mean, she WAS focussing most her attention directly on Marlee, but i guess she wanted to show she acknowledged the interpreter as well. we hearing people take advantage of not having to make eye contact when we can hear (an interpreter).
marlee has jack as an interpreter and has had him for years.that is why its a male voicing for her instead of female.. She is comfortable with him as an interpreter,so she pays him to come with her and interpret, because they easily understand eachother.
I think it has to do with the fact that, for lack of a better term, Normal people (although I hate that particular phrase with a passion), feel more comfortable addressing others like them than those with handicaps. I happen to be totally blind and we do get that sort of treatment sometimes if we happen to be in a public business with a sighted companion. Waiters and waitresses used to ask my sighted companions what I wanted.
Deaf people prefer to pick interpreters they can trust, understand, and feel comfortable with. Marlee probably is friends with Jack and wants to support him and his business.
Apperently some deaf people prefer an interpreter of opposite sex so that people listening can really tell the difference between the interpreter and the person signing and not think that the voice belongs to the signer.
Also he's been interpreting for her since Children of the lesser God so I think they are good friends and feel comfortable traveling together to places. Also he is really good interpreter:)
MARLEE MATLIN, you absolutely rule! Despite of everything you've been through, you stil pull out head strong and absolutely marvelous. I ADORE AND LOVE YOU! (for real!) :D
Thanks so much for posting this. Hope you get to post Marlee Matlin stuff. :)

I remember she played Amy Solwey in Law and Order: SVU. You get to hear her talk several times in that episode.

@Bryan198026 She can talk?
EverythingMe15 1 year ago
@EverythingMe15 As far as I know, being deaf doesn't mean you can't talk. I think she just normally uses sign language.

Shes never learnt how to speak properly. Apart from not being able to hear people's voices, she can't hear her own voice either.

I loved her in Children of a lesser God, it was a touching story and she had good chemistry with William Hurt.

@Duhwuntoono Yeah and eventually they came into a relationship, but it ended badly because he was abusive towards her.

That is a good question!
However, Maybe they are good friends and she feels comfortable with him!!
I really have no idea, I am just randomly guessing!

shouldn't the interviewer just look at marlee, rather than spending all that time turning to look at the interpreter?
