Each country is required by law to kill infested livestock. If they didn't, the disease could actually spread throughout Asia then Europe, eventually to the U.S. I do not support animal cruelty any more than anyone else, but I would put down any diseased animal who threatened my health.

I would never compare the life on an insect to the life of an animal, but killing them should be avoided since it's not necessary. I don't think it's right to kill insects and I hope someday no insects will be killed in the process of growing plants. But you seem to have no problem with insects being killed, and you certainly have no problem of killing twice as much plants as necessary and killing animals. I'm just trying to minimize the killing/suffering as much as possible.
