Just, went to this place today, after seeing the video, and man is it different now. The area was great, though. I got there at 12:30 am and drove around photographing until just before noon. Great time, and I cant wait to go back and photograph some of the stuff i missed, slab city in particular
What a shame that the realistic future of Salton Sea is nadda. Due to lack of a fresh feed into the lake among other things, Salton is a Vosion gon terribly wrong. With regards to the "former" military base, that would be camp Dunlop a WWII marine installation now known as The Slabs or Slab City, which is am alternative living community of squatters. You can view many old bunkers there. Please respect the residents.
@KrissyinLA Indeed. There is a multibillion dollar plan to save the Sea, but getting the funding approved isn't likely to happen anytime soon. I've been to Slab City, but haven't checked out the bunkers yet.
@slworking2 Good to know, thanks for the update. Lol I just realized my horrid typos, these damned iPhones ughh!! Going out to hopefully film out I'm that area soon.
I believe some dip-shit politician or CA bearucrats had the fresh water re-routed that once fed the lake, which in turn turned it into the worlds biggest cess-pool...... good job , jackass!
@mrsmelzbad The chamber of commerce is trying real hard to get the Salton Sea restored, but it seems that there are few politicians from outside the community that have any interest in fixing the Sea. The Salton Sea has lots of potential to be a booming recreation area once again - if only the state and/or private parties would invest in the area.
the only reason the sea even exists and has any water is because of a man-made screw up a hundred years ago to fill up what nature had emptied.
those politicians have a valid reson not to siphon of resources from other areas to fill in what nature wants to be a dessert for B-illions of our taax dollars. so, yeah, they did do a good job, jackass.
@MagicTimeVideo They needed the water to take care of millions of ILLEGAL mexicans. No doubt. They cant keep there inmates locked up, or keep water flowing , but Hot-Damn weez sho- nuf takes goooooooood care of dem illegals, at $20 BILLION per year?....... good plan.....jack-ass
@mrsmelzbad The problem was that the lake only had rivers flowing in and no rivers leaving the lake. Meaning the water in it never flowed out. With no outlet and with all the run off from the fields and the new river from Mexico it kept getting more and more polluted.
@sean57 Ouch! All gone?! Must have just recently been bulldozed. It was still standing when I was in the area a few weeks ago, I believe. I didn't explore it on my most recent trip, but could have sworn I could still see it off in the distance. Was it demolished very recently?
Do you know when this place was abandoned? I noticed some compact fluorescent light bulbs in one of the ceiling lights, so it couldn't have been too long again.
and if you drink the water there you will most definitely die of the greasy shits.
Just wait I tell you. When the high dollar high powered perverts start to develop the place it will become a supreme sex offender strong hold. Children will not be allowed within the ghetto. They will not be wanted there by its new citizens. Crime will not be permitted. gangs will be dealt with and the population will swell from the influx of new ex offenders. I cant wait for this decaying desolation to be reborn
The smell hasn't been tooooooooooo bad lately. There are some efforts being proposed to fix the lake up - but nothing is likely to happen until the state budget really improves.
I remember that stench! Great videos! Would love to see more if you're in the area. Is there anything left of Salton Sea Beach or Desert Shores? I heard they demolished the Sundowner...or maybe it just finally collapsed. It was leaning pretty bad in the early 90's. lol
Thanks! Salton Sea beach still has several abandoned trailers (check out my Flickr page). There isn't a whole lot left at Desert Shores. I never got a chance to see the Sndowner in person. Arsonists burned it down several years ago. A few years later, all traces of it - including the sign - were removed. -(
I didn't know that about the sundowner...what a bummer. Did they burn down the restaurant as well? Anyway thanks for the link to your pics, very cool. :)
Isn't that the place where back in the days anyone who was anyone would go until, for some engineering miscalculation, the PH level risen to a level where no living thing could live in the water, and salt deposits can be found around the edges?
That seems like a cool place. Since I was a kid I always loved abandoned buildings.
jason: Yeah. People were buying lots like crazy. They were told that this would be the next Palm Springs and that it would turn into some hot resort community. Unfortunately, a few hurricanes hit the area (yeah, some very rare hurricanes in So Cal) and flooded out many of the properties along the shore.
Then, a few years later, the water began drying up. Since there's no nature inflow our outflow for this lake, the salinity has increased beyond that of the oceans. The fish can't tolerate the unnatural salt level and have been dying off by the hundreds of thousands. The shores are littered with decaying fish and the stench can be really bad at times. Needless to say, property values have plummeted - even though this is waterfront property.
Too salty, fish dying causes botulism. The water is deadly. No radiation, just DEATH!

well if they would price the real estate to a level where people could buy it people would buy up the land there and make a go of it.
its a good place for truck drivers to live!!

This is some of the most affordable real estate in Southern California. New suburban homes start at $99,000. And used ones can be had for much less.

lake walker in nevada has the same fate in store for it.
