Anyone can tune a car and then claim it's faster than the equivalent stock motor, what is done/ or spent on the civic can easily be done to the clio, clio's are very tunable just like the type-r so really its a pointless argument.
As for weight, the clio 172 cup at 1010 kg is very light for a modern hatch which gives it an immediate advantage.

Both civic and clio ive owned and nothing went wrong with the clio people chat nonsense everyday. Type r was only fun after 5,500rpm, the clio is fun all the way and more exciting around corners. But again they are both nice motors end off.
I had a 182 Clio and I have had a few decent hot hatches in my time, but that Clio was one nippy car and handled like a dream. I have had a go in that Civic as well and it is a very good car but for me the Clio edges it because it is lighter and pulls out of corners better. The only time I got embarrased in my Clio was by a BMW 330d, so I bought one, and it is simply a beast.

Obviously the Clio will lose, not only does the Civic Type R have the advantage of 28 horsepower, it also has the VTEC system, acts almost like a turbo charger at high revs.

You cant say type r drivers are usually crap. The problem is with the car in that it has such a narrow powerband, its hard to constantly keep it above 6k revs on a track. In a straight line its easy because you just change gear almost at the limiter ;)
with the both the clio and type r it really comes down to driver and the type r driver was clearly less experienced. for me id go for the clio as i cant be doing with the type r dashboard and square corners. both very good cars though with the type r being the more reliable having the mighty v-tec.

Type r's are not bad cars, yet they are over rated. They have no torque at all below 5k rmp and when the vtec kick in you have to change gear fairly quickly after that. The clios have much smoother torque delivery and in my opinion are the better car of the 2.
And the comments about the "cheapness" of the clio.thats because they are the cheaper car of the 2.For the money you pay for a 172 you wouldn't expect to get into your car and feel like your in a 5* hotel would you.Clio all the way!

The civic type r's (not including the ek9, which I will own at some point - work of art!) are far too highly though of. These clios were near on 200kgs lighter, with a whole load of torque, and with torque being the deciding factor in what 'feels' fast, there aint no contest.
i got rid of my 172 cos its french shit, cheap nasty crap, things go wrong all the time,172 have no where near the top end grunt that a civic has.. so your tellin me that a solid axle is best, grow up and get real, what fuckin planet are you on, the new ctr`s dont handle as well the old ep3 one`s, the old one`s aint perfect but still better than the clio,if the clio was a better car i wouldnt have bought a ctr..and if think jap is crap.. well it shows you know fuck all about what your talking...

UK type R civics are nothing special. note the fact that the camera car is a 92-95 civic eg6 with only 160 hp and weighs pretty much the same as the older shape clio 172 if not more. and yet neither the type r or the clio can outrun it . so id say for a well over 10 year old car the EG6 gets the credit here. Not round corners it wont, Civics produce more BHP so straight line speed is more, 172/182 produces more torque so much better in and out of the corners. There pretty even tbh
The Type R wasnt being driven properley, I have an EP3 Type R and ive wasted many a Clio 172 and 182's ! Its also been proven in every road test comparing the two cars......The Civic always comes out on top.

I have a clio mk3 197, and have owned a mk2 172 ph2, and personally if I could get insurance on the civic type R I would. I just like the styling. Dont get me wrong a clio will out handle most hot hatchs out there but you have to take it to the peak RPM just to get any power and then its time to change!

Clio 172s are very, very good but a test like this depends on the driver. Tiff Needell from fifth gear tested the CTR vs a 182 and the CTR won, he drove both to the limit. The Clio driver is obviously slightly better. But the CTR is the quicker, better built car.
clio 172`s aint fast i used to own one! civic`s are definately a quicker and a much better all round car, just look at the suspension set up for a start off, clio runs the old solid bem rear axle!! way behind in times!

The Civic was driven Poorly but it's the faster Car. The Clio is a hell of a lot of car for the money. Both are Great Cars.
There was a type R before the EP3, it was the EK9 Type R. 185hp from a 1.6 reaching 60 in only 5.7 secs, the EP3 wasn't the 1st Real Hot Hatch from Honda. Even the 1.6Vti's were top of the hot hatches when released. They were quicker than the Golf Gti's, the Clio Williams, the Pug Gti's, the honda having 158Bhp.
Fact is, it's down to the driver most of the time!

That't not a type R civic.
Look at the dash, it's a 5th gen civic, there never was a type-r 5th gen.
At that time the top-of-the-line civic was the EG6 which had about 160-170bhp.

There is hardly anything between them. Power to weight ratio is the same, Clio has more torque albeit only 3lbft but is 170kg's lighter.

Type r's are not bad cars, yet they are over rated. They have no torque at all below 5k rmp and when the vtec kick in you have to change gear fairly quickly after that. The clios have much smoother torque delivery and in my opinion are the better car of the 2.
And the comments about the "cheapness" of the clio.thats because they are the cheaper car of the 2.For the money you pay for a 172 you wouldn't expect to get into your car and feel like your in a 5* hotel would you.Clio all the way!

The civic type r's (not including the ek9, which I will own at some point - work of art!) are far too highly though of. These clios were near on 200kgs lighter, with a whole load of torque, and with torque being the deciding factor in what 'feels' fast, there aint no contest.

i got rid of my 172 cos its french shit, cheap nasty crap, things go wrong all the time,172 have no where near the top end grunt that a civic has.. so your tellin me that a solid axle is best, grow up and get real, what fuckin planet are you on, the new ctr`s dont handle as well the old ep3 one`s, the old one`s aint perfect but still better than the clio,if the clio was a better car i wouldnt have bought a ctr..and if think jap is crap.. well it shows you know fuck all about what your talking...

UK type R civics are nothing special. note the fact that the camera car is a 92-95 civic eg6 with only 160 hp and weighs pretty much the same as the older shape clio 172 if not more. and yet neither the type r or the clio can outrun it . so id say for a well over 10 year old car the EG6 gets the credit here. Anybody can quote cars they have beaten, i have an Import Civic EG6 SIR2 and outrun a shed load of bikes, cateram's and porches on the isle of man TT mountain course dsn meen mine is faster

haha u missing the point. yes i am talkin about proper bikes as in plenty of 600s an 1000s, to be fair it takes a fair amount of skill and balls to take a corner at a decent speed in a bike yea they were taking me up the mile strait but soon as wer in the corners im past and gone.( ps in TT week the mountain course is a 1 way road so over taking round corners is accepted ) the main point of how fast a car can go is down to the driver, how easy the car is to handle and how well it grips.

I have a clio mk3 197, and have owned a mk2 172 ph2, and personally if I could get insurance on the civic type R I would. I just like the styling. Dont get me wrong a clio will out handle most hot hatchs out there but you have to take it to the peak RPM just to get any power and then its time to change!

Clio 172s are very, very good but a test like this depends on the driver. Tiff Needell from fifth gear tested the CTR vs a 182 and the CTR won, he drove both to the limit. The Clio driver is obviously slightly better. But the CTR is the quicker, better built car.

Tyres and driver are what matters most in two cars so closely matched.

The Civic was driven Poorly but it's the faster Car. The Clio is a hell of a lot of car for the money. Both are Great Cars.
There was a type R before the EP3, it was the EK9 Type R. 185hp from a 1.6 reaching 60 in only 5.7 secs, the EP3 wasn't the 1st Real Hot Hatch from Honda. Even the 1.6Vti's were top of the hot hatches when released. They were quicker than the Golf Gti's, the Clio Williams, the Pug Gti's, the honda having 158Bhp.
Fact is, it's down to the driver most of the time!
