Beau Travail is one of those labours which really brings home to honest men the fact that their honour is still worth more in this cheap trick world than anything a thousand two bob bankers or property developer con men can do. End crap and shallow commercialism! Reintroduce the quality of human relationships as the staple diet of human life experience. Delay the inevitable alternative: Lifewar!
What a great film about the FFL along the story line of Billy Budd by H. Melville. Great ending w/ that wild break out dance to the GREAT Carona song The RHYTHM OF THE NIGHT!!!! That is a great song w/ terrifc dancing as well. Thanks for giving us this clip! Always wonderful to watch!!!!!!!
I find myself playing it over and over again, trying to work out why an ok piece of music and an ok bit of dancing are so transformed when they are put together. Its such a strangely perfect ending. Mesmerising.
Adoro ! Uma das cenas mais marcantes para mim do cinema frances. E esse ator é o mesmo que contracena com Juliette Binoche em "Os amantes du Pont Neuf".
Guess you didn´t understand the movie! Why do you think it´s annoying? It is not only about uselessness, it´s about aesthetics and unexpressed desires. Try to see the movie from another point of view and you´ll see how deep it goes.
We studied it in depth for my A Level film study exams, there's soooo much to analyse about the film it's simply unreal.
I remember this 'dance sequence' at the end, it's such a iconic moment, we always used to ask for the dance sequence, it brings back happy memories of 6th form
BTW: it is classic book set in 13eme DBLE of the French Foreign Legion around Arta beach in Djibouti (east of country), a merciless place, and Legion is depicted "as is"...hard to endure, full of the esprit du corps and sometimes "le betisses"...bad things happen even betveen brothers. Was proud to be part of it in early 90's.... and movie shows it all... crude and brute...
For once: this is NOT against war, NOT to show surreality and stupidity of military, it's about men, their feelings, loneliness and dissparation from real life as you know it. A great work of art by a fine lady Claire Denis! although hard to comprehend for someone who didn't read the book, and don't copy all events or things which can occurs in someone's life.
@burian39 I havent read the book - perhaps you could tell me if the dance is mentioned in the book or is this an addition by Glaire Denis. I cant imagine its was scripted - its wonderful.
For some Soldiers and regular people, their job/mission became so much of their life, that it became one's "family" and loosing it...equals end. Great movie, for someone who knows what it's about it bring the shivers...
At the end of the movie, there is all this pent up energy in this character. To see him dance is this total f'n release. Watching it, outside of sitting through the full movie, I still almost cried. This is such a wonderful scene that makes you leave the theatre overwhelmed. Thank you Claire for making this wonderful film.

I can't thank you enough for posting this movie--I have to write a paper about it, so it's handy to be able to watch certain scenes over again.

This is the only part of this movie I liked. Way to homoerotic for my taste.
