@warwick2155 I agree with u tht Skolnick is definitely more talented than Hammett, but Metallica is a cornerstone in the history of heavy metal. They were pioneers in their time. Frank Zappa, for instance, is definitely less talented than the new wave of musicians that we see now (Frank Gambale, Guthrie Govan, etc) but he as well was a pioneer.

They are the big four because they sold the most records. That is not a criticism of them or any bands outside of the "big four" envelope, it's just the way it is.

"Big four" is not about who makes "thrash" now, or who is more "trashy" (it's not about amount of thrash "that's being thrown into an atmosphere" at all ). Big Four (of Thrash Metal) is nothing but, 4 bands ( more exactly, their music) that played a huge role in development of the particular style (thrash metal). You can't take that away from Metallica, they had influenced that style enough to be in "the big four" 'till the end of TIME.
