Part 1: Whitesnake's Doug Aldrich Demos Marshall's New MG Amps at NAMM 2009

1) Most of the problem with video demos of the MG series is the people playing them generally don't do such a great job setting the tone. This thing sounds great when set properly, and in the skilled hands of a good guitarist as proven here. 2) On solid state VS tube - beauty is in the ear of the beholder and shame on you guys for browbeating anyone for liking either/or more. I like tubes though. :P

@nomadic30 You're quite right. Way too many people rely too much on their equipment. That's why I have a 50 watt plexi. 6 knobs...that I never touch. My amp is tube. But that's because to my ears anything solid state starts sounding plasic and lifeless after a few minutes of playing. Tubes also allow the amp to have more overall impact to your tone. While tone is mostly in the hands, tubes give your tone more power and depth. You'll always sound better on a tube amp than a solid state.

The tone at 2:10 to 2:15 with 2 simple chords is "that Marshall sound" that we are all looking for - Perfect. Shows that these amps are perfect for home based guitar heroes like me :-)

@jimbobplaysbass Doug uses straight minor scales mostly (like a lot of guys in the 80s used predominantly), blended with the pentatonic stuff. Doug is a lot like Jeff Watson from Night Ranger in style actually.

i dont care what anyone says, the mg through a FULL SIZED cab with REAL celestion speakers is one of the best sounding solid state heads made imo

Perhaps the smaller 1x12" MG Series might be a decent bedroom practice amp or beginning player amp. But aside from that, I much prefer the warmth and tonal character of power-tube saturation. Nothing sounds better than the awesome sound from cooking up a pair of EL34 Mullards in a good Marshall head!

Yeah. His attitude suites Slayer, and Slayer are a great band. Legendary. BUT, Kerry King can't do solos for shit. Though he is a very good rhythm player, but that's it.

i think this guy is a great player....i don't dig the tones too much, but that is pretty subjective....

I tried this amp out for an hour or so in the store and I felt it was just a bit too crispy and non-disinct.

For the money I thought the Fender vibro champ and super champ XD sounded better and had more variety

I agree, the MG series of Marshalls are like the underbelly of Marshall's great reputation. I recently played through a JCM full stack and I was blown away. It sounded absolutely amazing. Like a Laney amp but with a faster plate voltage. But that is just because it is one of their better tube amps that I enjoyed it. My Vox and Mesa A/B rig whups any Marshall rig though.

Look at the bright side, for around £200 - £300, you get an extremely versatile amp with a wide range of features including 4 different channels, 6 different effects that can be mixed and matched and all controlled by a programmable footswtich!

Doug Aldrich could make a 2x4 with an elastic wrapped around it sound good! I am not a big fan of the MG's at all. I tried one at the local music store and it was only mediocre. Two thumbs up to a great guitarist and awesome perfomance though...........

DSL SUPER LEAD-marshall 2x12 and 4x12. I have not noticed a diminished sound quality after it gets hot though, if anything, for me, it sounds better. I mounted a small fan onto the back to keep things cooler than hotter. Especially where we rehearse.
