Russians went from peaceful, heroic people trying to save Europe to dirty Commies in less than a decade in American media. So if I was a betting man I'd say the truth was somewhere in the middle. And the same goes for American conflicts of today. The news stations show one side of the story only. They cant be trusted.

As an American who has studied WW2 for 30+ years I wish more of my countrymen would study history. So Many Americans think that we are #1 and the rest of the world hardly matters. I like the way this particular movie neatly side-steps and ignores the fact that Stalin made a pact with Hitler, and divided Poland between them ahead of time. That was part of the agreement. Stalin thought he could placate Hitler. Russia was sending Germany wheat and raw materials right up to the date of the Nazi invasion. Both Churchill and Stalin's own spies told him that the Nazis were going to attack and when, but he refused to believe them....

This movie also neatly ignores the Russian invasion on Finland in 1939 and that the USSR was expelled from the League of Nations because of this aggression. Well, the Finns did kick Stalin's ass.

Don't take my question the wrong way (I honestly can't remember). Didn't the Russians invade a part of Finland and not the nation proper? I know Helsinki was bombed and the Russians committed other crimes during the Winter War. However, I was under the impression it was a territorial dispute involving Karelia and a sliver of Finnish land. Separate issue: The Nazis initiated force against the Soviets, let's remember. Not the other way around. The Soviets were nominally Axis up until '41.

You're right, the Russians invaded only a part of South-Eastern Finland although their big plan was to march on to Helsinki in 2 or 3 weeks. Initially the Winter War was a territorial dispute but hadn't the Finns fought so hard, it could have led to a complete sovietization of the whole country - as happened in the Baltic countries in the summer of '40.

I love these documentaires, somehow better than todays. But there is a very interessting thing and ultra important. I am a weapon expert and all other weapon lovers shall look very very cloe at 1:45. Here u see the probaly single fotage of the Fedorov 1915 that the russian hunter shoots. It is one of the first assault rifles in the world. Look when he shoots then u see its automatic because he fires in bursts. Its the second oldest assaultrifle after the italian Cei- Rigotti.

yes lend lease did help at the start of the war when most of the russian army were destroyed in 1941. however i doubt very much that the US and the UK gave the USSR the 10,000 or so T34s that advanced on berlin.

numbers wise, the russian army was indeed large, but then again their casulties rates were higher too. only during op. bagration in 1944 did they lose less men than the germans.

"The fall of Berlin"(Падение Берлина) did not showed a negative image on USA. Btw, remember that USA joined the war at the last years. What would you expect Soviets to make on USA? "Super-man comes to aid the national resistances in Europe"? Even in Normandia, when US had hard battles, it was not only US, but USA, UK, Canada...(differently from what is shown in Private Ryan´s movie)

The only thing that saved the Russians was Americans lend lease sending them all the weapons and equipment they used to fight against Hitler for the first 2 years of their war against Hitler. Hitler killed tens of millions of Russians, but there were just too many of them to kill with out weapons of mass destruction. Soviets were tough, but there was nothing good about their civilian or military leadership. USA making it a 2 front war was what doomed the Nazis and saved the commies period.

Russians flew fighter planes that America flew over to them from Alaska. Russians used old World War 1 American destroyers that americans sailed to them in Murmansk because then and now the Russian navy is pathetic. Russians drove American Grant and Sherman tanks before they had the industrial capacity to produce T - 34 and KV tanks in large numbers. Russians were using American Tommy guns and rifles just like the British Commonwealth were. Thank USA for your existence Ruskie commies.

Around 10% of Soviet effectives came from UK and USA. Without Western help(considering that they would not aid Nazi), USSR would yet win the war due to the facts shown at this movie, but in 1947 probably.
