At the time, we were concerned about a regional holocaust if communism were to continue it's imperial expansion. I'm not quite sure if it's accurate to say that our intervention in vietnam was a colonial move. In fact our withdrawal, possibly contributed to a genocide in Cambodia... if only we had the political will to stay there, we might have averted this disaster.
No, try reading a book or two about the history of the Viet Nam war. Or, view a very well known documentary called "Hearts & Minds."
In 1954 there was a peace conference in Geneva. The French wanted out of Viet Nam after a defeat at Diem Bien Phu. The Viet Namese (north & south) agreed to hold elections in 1956 to unify the country. All historians agree Ho Che Min was super popular nationalist leader who would have won. America prevented the elections from happening.
Perhaps we wanted to stop it because the communists had killed 10-20 million at that point. (in russia, china, etc)
And I'll even stick my neck out a bit and say: how can u expect an uneducated agrarian population to say no to communism, not understanding the consequences of their decision. They didnt have google to find out that communism ravaged entire swaths of humanity by that point in time
They learned it the hard way.. now they're catching up with a little Miltonism helping them
If and when you begin to read books, you will learn the USA army was defeated and thrown out of Viet Nam. I gave you the title of the seminal work in this regard written by a US Army colonel who taught at West Point. Why do neo fascists refuse to read books? You are a propagandist who seeks to rewrite history. American propaganda has been successful in this regard. Your lack of knowledge of the Viet Nam war is a tribute to the success of US propaganda.
U & I are living in the waning end of the Progressive Era. Up until the 70s, history (in large part) was written by the winners of this era. I count u as one who adopts the 'winners' view of history, which largely contradicts WF Buckley's view

Let's see now, what have we got here? Capitalism & America are about 200 years old. Both are in chaos & crisis. US Real income has declined for 30 years. Most of Karl Marx's critique of capitalism is proving correct: the rich are getting richer & the poor poorer. cycles of depression, concentrations of inequality, monopolies, an elite class without a meritocracy, etc. In fact, the USA is leading the world into a major recession, if not a Depression.
if i have $100, and a rich person has $10,000, and we both invest in the market with the same rate of return. The rich person will get noticeably richer than I, correct?
but both of our wealth increased at the same rate
you gotta let go of that cliche... the injustice isn't with capitalism, it is with simple arithmetic
I'm more concerned about the teachers union monopoly... they've been churning out an underclass for decades.
Again, your referring to "cliche rhetoric" is projection in pursuit of dominance. Your arithmetic is a tribute to your foolishness. It reflects your inability to read books. Many authors have documented the increasing inequality aand it's consequences. I suggest you start with Pulitzer Prize winner David Kay Johnson.
the poor will always move up more slowly than the rich... the idea is to give them the most opportunity to do so. Socialist policies have proven to be antithetical to this goal... & in practice, the poor become pawns of the democrat party. look at every major city with a large welfare state & u'll see serfdom
is this the socialist's goal? i think not.
as a libertarian, my means produce better results than the socialists' means
Enlightenment philosopher Jean Jacques Rousseau wrote: "The rich form governments to steal from the poor." This redistribution of income & wealth from poor to rich is done mainly through the regressive tax system - welfare for the rich. America is a welfare state for the rich.
i model my personal life after Rousseau.. naughty man
it's clear, both u & I have not achieved that threshold of wealth.. once u get to a certain point, your wealth is self-replenishing. I cannot believe that the millions of people past that point are animated to oppress the lower classes. They simply invest in people who seem responsible enough to increase the value of their investments
your boogieman does not exist.. except perhaps in the social democrats of the world.. but u do not see it
Please give me an accounting of when and how China killed 10-20 million? According to Harvard's Prof. John K. Fairbanks & Columbia & Johns Hopkins Prof A. Doak Barnett, China never exceeded its borders in its 5000 year history.
I agree the Russian Boleshiviks mass murdered, perhaps, 15 million Ukranians by starvation. Are you saying Russian mass murder justifies American mass murder in Viet Nam, Iraq & around the globe?
Your reference to "Miltonism" is amusing. Miltonism consists of (1) deregulation (2) privatization (3) the elimination of all social services.
Have you read "The Shock Doctrine" by Naomi Klein? Klein steps through all the countries where Miltonism was implemented and describes how these countries were decimated, if not destroyed by Uncle Miltie. Check it out. Be sure to read all 466 pages (hardcover).
Naomi Klein is a known propagandist. Her portrayal of Milton is completely wrong. And she knows it. Besides, what is an old man like u thinking Naomi is credible? Her audience is uninformed youth ages 15-25
I borrowed her book from a misguided friend. it's a funny read if you know history. There's a great youtube video of a scholar going point by point thru her distortions. What she accuses the right of doing, her ideology has been consciously or unconsciously attempting since the 19th century
You did not answer my question. Please allow me to reiterate the question: Have you read "The Shock Doctrine" by Naomi Klein (all 466 pages)? Klein steps through all the countries where Miltonism was implemented and describes how these countries were decimated, if not destroyed by Uncle Miltie.
You claim to know Ms Klein's ideology. What is her ideology? How is it the same as the neo conservative demands?
America in the 1960's invaded Viet Nam with over 500,000 men. According to former Defense Secretary Robert McNamara the USA killed 2.8 million Viet Namese. We also killed 2 million Loatians and Cambodians. Nixon secretly without Confgresses knowledge invaded Cambodia.
Consider this: after the war we took in the refugees. now there's a thriving vietnamese community here in s california. The vietnamese who stayed in VN have lived in a b j e c t poverty until recently (the walmart effect), and I'm not aware of a thriving vietnamese community in russia
So when we look at this, what are we to conclude? As a humanitarian, I wish we wouldve won the war. Vietnam would probably look like Taiwan or Hongkong today. such a shame
There was only one aggressor that invaded Viet Nam - - America. Therefore, your question is easy to answer. China & Russia didn't invade Viet Nam in the 20th century. Only America did so.
America allowed a few thousand refugees into the US, after mass murdering 4.8 million. These were traitors who worked for the imperial aggressor. The nationalist patriots had no need to leave and go to Russia or anywhere else.
Naturally American neo fascists Empire builders believe America should win all wars of conquest & occupation.Like American Imperialists you presume to know what is best for other countries. The Viet Namese are enjoying their country without your advice.
The US has allowed 700 Iraqi refugees to enter America after mass murdering well over 2 million Iraqis.
my postings are pretty good. which is probably why u're not allowing some of them
I hope Im getting thru to u. U must see the folly of ur ideas/ ur ideology. Its over.. it was over w/ reagan. All he had to do was show that govt was the impediment to progress. Its in the historical record now for good

my bad... the site didn't update when i last checked.
I still think you're feeling envy or a certain sadness about the state of affairs on this sphere. I understand why you want to defend your lifelong worldview in this new era. My marxist friends express similar sentiments and are slowly starting to see the structural problems within their ideology.
Marx is still relevant in some ways philosophically, but has proven devastating when put into practice. People simply don't like walls
The regional holocaust was committed by America. In addition to the 4.8 million Southeast Asians we mass murdered, our destruction of Cambodia allowed the Khmer Rouge to mass murder more Cambodians. The Cambodian people were saved by the North Viet Namese army., which left the country after defeating the Khmer Rouge.
It wasn't a matter of political will. Our army was totally defeated by the worlds finest army. The Vietnamese army defeated China (several times). Japan, France & the USA.
These figures seem high to me. However, I can look them up at another time to verify your claim
Even so: AGAIN, who was the initial aggressor? The SU was a true Imperial power. Due to her flawed economic system, she needed to acquire more resources to sustain herself. Altruistically expanding because they 'knew' they had a better system, they just had to prove it. But they couldn't reach their goal unless there was no free place on earth for people to run to
Again, there was only one aggressor that invaded Viet Nam - - America. Therefore, your question is easy to answer. China & Russia didn't invade Viet Nam in the 20th century. Only America did so.
The USA has well over 700 bases in over 130 countries. How many did Russia have? Ans.: far less.
It is the American Empire that has stolen land, labor & resources from the underdeveloped world for a century and the beat goes on.
You're old enough to know better than that. The SU was backing the aggressor
With all this information available to u.. u still think that the US is an empire. Simply amazing. More money & resources flows from this country into the rest of the world than any nation in the history of man. The only true imperial power was your friends the soviets, which destroyed everything they touched
Every country the US touched, grew
No amount of rhetoric or tortured logic will change that fact. :)
How could Viet Nam be the aggressor in it's own country? Russia & China never sent troops into Viet Nam. Therefore, they did not invade Viet Nam. America sent millions of men into Viet Nam - 500,000 US troops were in Viet Nam in 1965.
Many writers belive America is an Imperial Colonialist Empire, including former CIA consultant (8 yrs) Chalmers Johnson who has written a triology about US Empire: 1. Blow Back 2. Sorrows of Empire 3. Nemesis.
The population of Viet Nam was reduced by 5 million.
If you don't believe the mighty American army was defeated, I suggest you read: "ON Strategy: A Critical Ananlysis of th Viet Nam War," by Col. Harry G. Summers (look him up in Google & Wikpedia). He taught at West Point.
Of course we were roundly defeated... The vietnamese were a formidable force and we partially tied our own hands, not bombing schools, churches, etc... which is of course where all the guns were stored.
Let me ask you something... do you think the Soviet model is preferable for humanity? or the Euro Socialist model? or something else?
You are incorrect. America bombed civilian schools & churches on a regular basis. This is what war hero John McCain did as a war criminal.
As one who has lived in 3 Social Democratic countries in Western Europe, I can say life for ordinary folks is far superior to the poverty of America - both material & spiritual. Life in Socialist Latin America also appears superior. The Boleshivk model was nothing more then fascism.
I'm not going to refight the vietnam war. The US was trying to avert a potential holocaust by your altruistic ideological friends
You're absolutely right. Life in W Europe is superior to the US... but it is unsustainable. Why should w europe enjoy such an existence while the bulk of humanity lives in abject poverty? If they streamlined their top heavy govts & trimmed down their large welfare states. then some of that money could go to improving conditions in the 3rd world
Please be specific. What country was going to commit a "holocaust?" The only country to commit a holocaust in Viet Nam was America's mass murder of 4-5 million Southeast Asians.
It is America that steals and enjoys the land, labor and resources of the world. Why did you overlook this fact?
Thank you!

It is America that steals and enjoys the land, labor and resources of the world. Why did you overlook this fact?
