Boricua is a person born in Puerto Rico. Because the island it is called Puerto Rico, and "Borinquen" too. I'm from Argentina,but i live in Miami. This is one of the most beautiful place on earth..whit people from all the world!

Boricua comes from Borinquen, the name of one of the original native tribes who lived in the island of Borinquen, today known as Puerto Rico (Rich Port) named as such because the spaniards used this island as a trading post to send back the wealth taken from the newly discovered world, to Spain.
Sorry, have to correct something...Borinquen was not the name of one of the original native "tribes". It was the actual name they had for the island. The actual native word is Boriké, changed to Borinquen because of the Spaniards pronunciation until they changed the island's name to San Juan, and then to Puerto Rico.
"Boricua" was the original name of the Native on the Island before they were renamed Puerto Ricans.... as to the original definition, i do know the original root is Boriken, describing the island as the great land of the valiant and noble Lord"

The island, before becoming a Spanish colony, the Taino (indegeous people) called the island Borinquen (as you can hear in this song) The island was later called San Juan Bautista and finally, Puerto Rico; however, the national anthem's name is 'La Borinquena'. La gente envidiosa al fin... no hay país que haya dado tanta cultura y exitos artisticos como Puerto Rico. Boricua is a person born in Puerto Rico. Because the island it is called Puerto Rico, and "Borinquen" too. I'm from Argentina,but i live in Miami. This is one of the most beautiful place on earth..whit people from all the world!

Boricua comes from Borinquen, the name of one of the original native tribes who lived in the island of Borinquen, today known as Puerto Rico (Rich Port) named as such because the spaniards used this island as a trading post to send back the wealth taken from the newly discovered world, to Spain.

Sorry, have to correct something...Borinquen was not the name of one of the original native "tribes". It was the actual name they had for the island. The actual native word is Boriké, changed to Borinquen because of the Spaniards pronunciation until they changed the island's name to San Juan, and then to Puerto Rico.

@kelanti Hi Kelanti. I'm 100% Boricua, meaning Puerto Rican. The island, before becoming a Spanish colony, the Taino (indegeous people) called the island Borinquen (as you can hear in this song) The island was later called San Juan Bautista and finally, Puerto Rico; however, the national anthem's name is 'La Borinquena'. @kelanti - Boricua is native from Boriken (Borinquen) original native Taino name for Puerto Rico. Taino is the original native pre-Columbus. Like Greece experienced centuries ago, PR is now under alot of pressure by a loud smaller percentage to Americanize us (USA). Fear has been instilled to sovereignty and be free to trade openly with the world which we cannot do today. Controversy at best with no apparent solution today. Freedom is an apparent challenge in our minds.
